This is so needed. Accessibility is literally none existence. I've been to a few places where I notice, the entrances have no access. How is this legal still. You have an amazing story and inspiring recovery. PS, include options in the app, that explain if a rest room has extremely loud toilet flushing or loud hand dryers, so user can avoid that rest room or at least be prepared for the sudden noise.

Awesome episode! Love the idea of companies coming out of the woodwork to support adaptive and inclusive populations. Greg makes a great point mentioning the thought expansion that comes from working with special populations. Great conversation!

Please be careful who you bring on to the show. Dustin is not reflective of the deaf community. He did not provide any conclusive solutions or examples on how to accommodate deaf people or disabled people in a fitness setting or in an employment setting. (I have watched several of his podcasts). He avoids answering any questions directly. He is not an advocate for the deaf community. There are other deaf people who have been athletes (college level and more) and whatnot who can help foster better connectivity and inclusivity in a fitness/employment world. Dustin is not deaf. He is hard of hearing, and refuses to acknowledge the severity of his hearing loss.

Hi @paume! Thanks for the insight. I don't believe Dustin claims to represent the entirety of the deaf community; nor does he refuse to acknowledge the severity of his hearing loss. I would certainly love to share more concrete examples of accommodations to fitness/employment if you've created any resources or published any conversations that touch on these topics. Would also love to host any of the aforementioned college athletes if you think they'd be willing.

The sit2stand test doesn't take into effect the 'Cowboy" factor. I had a great sit2stand and still fell plenty in the first year. Why? I pushed myself a lot. Cowboy up!

Anything for hemiplegia, thank you! It is such a challenge because it completely disrupts all natural limb pairings. I am right side hemiplegic from a severe stroke, after two years I'm still not able to use my right hand or arm. I ditched my afo and am learning to walk without it.

The key is the accessible business. Participation is the product of many factors. (Awareness) * (Opportunity) * (Empowerment) * Access = Participation. If access is zero, participation is zero. There are checklists available online for business owners to evaluate their compliance to the standards outlined in the ADA. Unfortunately, apps like this (which I think are great and useful) put the onus on the disabled community when that onus belongs on the business owner. If you opened a business after 1991, you don't have a choice to consider whether you want to be "inclusive", you have an obligation. This is a civil rights issue. The ADA is a civil rights law. Maybe what we need is a public shaming app.

Very interesting podcast. I appreciate your approach to training. I have been developing my own performance training program for the last decade. I call it crutchersize. Building strength is a facet, but performance is what matters. Putting strength to making functional improvements. That is what is lacking in the fitness arena for disabled athletes. I've been involved in numerous adaptive sports and recreation activiies. Wheelchair lacrosse, adaptive mountain biking, camping, hunting, fishing, and most recently adaptive adventure racing. I am a special education teacher and try to be an advocate for our community and adaptive recreation and sports. I find the best advocacy is being out there and being seen. When people see us committed to our own happiness and freedom, they want to be a part of it. She made a great point. You can't inspire others unless you can first inspire yourself.
