Naperville Astronomical Association
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 16 ก.ย. 2015
The Naperville Astronomical Association is an amateur astronomy society headquartered in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. Since 1973, we've been sharing the science of astronomy and the joys of stargazing with each other and everyone in the communities around us.
We create two presentations per month; one at our regular monthly meeting, which often features a guest speaker, and the second as our Astronomy Fundamentals program, at which a member gives a presentation about one aspect of stargazing or science, aimed at a beginner-level audience.
The NAA operates two observatories on our Astronomy Education Center campus, and holds free, open public observation sessions there and around the Chicagoland area all year 'round.
For a calendar of upcoming meetings and stargazing events, visit us a www.naperastro.org/calendar

Choosing a Telescope
Join us to find out what to consider when choosing a telescope. The discussion will start with the question, what do you expect to view? Is it the moon and planets or will it be deep sky objects, such as galaxies or nebula? From there our presenter will briefly describe different types of telescopes and share their respective strengths and weaknesses. This will also cover the visual and imaging abilities of the telescopes. The conclusion will also remind you that the best telescope is the one that used most often.

Visual Journey to the Planets
มุมมอง 51วันที่ผ่านมา
The planets will return to good visibility starting this autumn. In October, Ron Ziss will cover observing the planets-when they will be best seen and what features to look for. Ron will share his observations to highlight the key features of Jupiter and the phenomena of its moons, Saturn’s rings and bright moons, and the motions of Uranus and Neptune. He will also describe the upcoming opposit...
Naperastro, March 5, 2024: Yerkes Observatory's Rebirth
มุมมอง 1518 หลายเดือนก่อน
Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, Wisconsin, will forever hold an important place in the history of the science of astronomy. After being decommissioned by the University of Chicago in 2019, the observatory was transferred to the newly founded Yerkes Future Foundation. In this presentation, Dr. Amanda Bauer, Deputy Director of the YFF, fills us in on the progress that the organization has mad...
Naperastro, January 2, 2024: Lucy Tours the Trojan Asteroids
มุมมอง 2658 หลายเดือนก่อน
NASA has recently sent several spacecraft out into our solar system to explore some of its smaller members: the asteroids. These bodies hold many clues to the formation of our Sun and the whole system. The Lucy mission is on its way to the orbit of Jupiter, to visit a number of asteroids that orbit along with it; in this presentation, NASA Solar System Ambassador Bill Higgins fills us in on wha...
NAA 50th Anniversary - Final Golden Minute
มุมมอง 12310 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the last in our series of Golden Minutes for our 50th Anniversary celebration. It about the observatories that many have visited over the 50 years, and hopefully will continue to be visited by many fans of looking up at night!
Naperastro, December 5, 2023: "Yellowballs" and the Birth of Stars
มุมมอง 16010 หลายเดือนก่อน
Citizen scientists analyzing data from the Spitzer Space Telescope identified a new class of galactic nebulae which are colloquially known as yellowballs. In this presentation, astronomer Grace Wolf-Chase, who helped lead that work, brings us up to date on what has been discovered about these star forming regions, and the insights they offer into stellar evolution.
Naperastro, October 3, 2023: A Personal History of the AAVSO
มุมมอง 62ปีที่แล้ว
For over a century, the American Association of Variable Star Observers has served as a conduit for making the scientific work of amateur astronomers available to professional researchers, with the amateurs providing hundreds of thousands of hours of data gathering time for scientific research. For over sixty years, Dr. Roger Kolman has been deeply involved with the AAVSO, starting out as a tee...

Naperastro, September 5, 2023: Nano-Hertz Gravitational Waves
มุมมอง 92ปีที่แล้ว
After a great review of the key aspects of the Theory of General Relativity, speaker Prof. Paul Bloom from North Central College explains how the observation of pulsars spinning neutron stars can be used to study the "sea" of gravitational waves that sloshes across the spacetime fabric of our universe.

Golden Anniversary Event
มุมมอง 100ปีที่แล้ว
2023 stands as the 50th Anniversary of our organization's founding. Part of the year's celebrations included a special Semicentennial Evening at our Astronomy Education Center on August 19th; the evening included short statements by a number of people active through the club's history, and from other local institutions, and state and local government. This video presents excerpts from their pre...
Naperastro, July 11,2023: The Tunguska Event
มุมมอง 122ปีที่แล้ว
In 1908, an incredible, earthshaking explosion occurred out in the vast Siberian wilderness. For the next century, investigators struggled to determine what caused it. In this presentation, historian and author Andy Bruno, Associate Professor at Northern Illinois University, presents his research into those efforts, and the widely differing theories as to what caused the blast.

Naperastro June 6, 2023: NASA's Psyche Mission
มุมมอง 196ปีที่แล้ว
In the fall of 2023, NASA is scheduled to launch the Psyche mission; "an electric journey to a metal asteroid". This probe will be the first to visit an asteroid that seems to be composed mostly of metal; it has the potential to tell us a lot about the formation of our solar system and also ones beyond ours. NASA Solar System Ambassador Bill Higgins does his usual fine job of presenting to us m...

You cannot get hemorrhoids by using Trojans that's what I was told.
At 19:23, the speaker says "If your job is flying Psyche, at certain times, you're going to be very busy!" Of course he means Lucy, not Psyche, an entirely different spacecraft. One hates to see this kind of thing at this level of play.
gracias bro por el tutorial la verdad que me fue muy útil gran video y tienes mas que merecido el like
Great!!
Nice shirt, Larry.
A really good talk. I learned quite a bit about a topic we've had many other talks on.
Thanks a lot for this, good stuff!
I enjoyed your live presentation in Naperville very much. Been doing a deep dive into Stellarium to learn its intricacies. Thank you!
This was a thoroughly enjoyable presentation. Thank you.
It's difficult to say how much I truly appreciate all your monthly programs. True learning experiences.
Thanks for this, from one of your local comrades in the Northwest Suburban Astronomers. 🤓
Thank you! Now I’m going to watch the rest of your videos. Much appreciated!
Hi, As you know, is it possible to take videos from this cameras (All Sky Camera or homebuilt one) and put in a projector to show on a roof in the night just as a LIVE PLANETARIUM? is the quality enough and is it possible? Thanks for answer
This was great, thanks Dr. Fishbach! I was bummed to miss this meeting, but the recording was great.
What a great resource. Thanks for sharing. I hope to join you for some events this year.
I’m looking to build an all sky cam just to capture meteors. I know that larger pixels are better for that. I’m not really sure if I should get a color or a mono camera for that. My guess is that if no IR cut filter is used then the sensitivity of the color cam would be pretty similar to a mono. I was wondering if a dash cam or a cheap wireless security cam that records motion and is good in low light could be used as a meteor cam too.
That's a measure of R. A. of 4 mins. 21 secs,....or 1 1/12°
Thanks for the in depth info!!
I hope this will continue when "live" meetings resume. This is very helpful to those of us that cannot attend the monthly meeting. Thanks for all efforts in making these presentations.
Thank you for uploading. I got the opportunity to see a rocket launch in 2018. Incredible experience. I posted a pretty fun montage of the trip to my page.
These presentations are GREAT. Thanks.
thanks so much, we're glad people enjoy them
Looks Great!! So cool to be able to see these on You Tube. Thanks
Very nice presentation!! Thank you
