    Just bought a used Bolex 18-5 Projector. However, for some reason the bottom loop disappears quickly when in forward mode and the top loop disappears when in reverse mode. There is no stabilized image whatsoever. What gives?

    Very helpful video. When I toggle to 8mm film, after the threading and running, the projection is "jumping". I tried pushing a few times on the lever of the top but it doesn't stop the jumping. I don't have this issue with Super 8 film. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

    Hi , hoping you can help me. I have this projector and a film that belonged to my Dad. Everything turns on but the reels don’t spin . From all the reading I’ve done , seems like the belt needs changing . Any tips or videos please ?? Many thanks

    If you are demonstrating this projector, why wouldn't you show how to thread it??? Makes no sense at all to just show how to rotate the switch and make some inane comments. POOR!

      Yes there's one screw on the top area of the back cover. Once that is removed the cover slides off.

    My grandma bought one of these second-hand in '67 after a lesser-quality but more modern projector had broken after only two years of use. The Bolex still works to this day and I sometimes use it with my grandma to watch old videos shot by her back in the sixties. Swiss engineering is really on a whole other level!

    Hello and thank you for the video! Do you know the ‘technical’ name for the reel that sits at the back of the projector?

      That would be the Bolex take-up reel.

      Steve on the lamp housing cover there is a little black plastic turn knob. Twist that counter clock wise and the cover will lossen. Then just slide it off. You will then have access to the lamp.

    Hello, loved the video - not too much material even on the internet on troubleshooting this device! I am still having an issue where the belt, engine, etc. Is running smoothly, but the bulb is going out. I was using the bulb and everything was going fine but then my reel started to become tangled. In my hectic pace to save the reel, i was pushing lots of buttons until it released, but in doing so the bulb shutoff. Now whatever I do, It does not turn back on (have tried multiple new bulbs). Do you have any suggestions here? I see a main difference on my projector in that the green slide up top on mine is all the way to the right versus yours is on the left side I havent found a way to release this over (do not have a manual with my machine). Do you think this could solve the issue? Really appreciate any response, and again, thanks for the great original content!

    • @shaneteacman
      @shaneteacman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dan, My guess would be that you may have bumped a wire or one has shorted under the base of the unit. The other possibility is the contacts where the bulb plugs in could be oxidized. Try cleaning those. Also on my machine you have to push down the threading button and once the film loads this lever is designed to release upwards to activate the bulb. Trying looking at that as well.

    You forgot to turn the main switch to 5, the projector has the unique slow-motion feature at 5 frames per second, flickerfree.

    Friend Freddy has already dismantled the panel where play is made etc. the reels go well back and forth but in the play continues without fixing what will be more? '' Thank you for your patience but help me thanks

    • @shaneteacman
      @shaneteacman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luis, from what I gather here in your message the play switch is not staying in place? The fix is to take the mechanism out, and re-lube all the parts. If you Google Sony TC-377 play lever issues you'll see people have posted about this problem. The 377 is a mechanical lever operated machine which don't always age all that well. They are lower in overall design compared to later electrically-controlled solenoid reel to reels.

      Hello! I would say if your primarily using Standard 8mm film then the Bolex 18-5 is a good choice. I occasionally shoot Super 8mm film and have shot Standard 8 in the past. I have found for my use a good dual 8mm projector is the best choice. A dual 8 will show both formats. My personal choice is the Honeywell Elmo FP8-C . I have also fitted that projector with a Bolex Hi-Fi lens similar to the bolex in my review here. Click this link to see the Elmo in action. th-cam.com/video/eE8xo_nRyP0/w-d-xo.html However as I mentioned if Standard 8mm is your choice then it's hard to beat a good working 18-5. These machines are well built like a swiss watch!

    This interview is interesting, thanks for posting. 83-55=28 years old in 1959, I never saw anything like this, not sure of the effect. Louis Matarazzo, the lone survivor said. "The Lord opened my side of the plane and I was able to jump out," in the hospital. Shoemaker's account is more credible.

    Any suggestions on how to maneuver a replacement belt into place? One of the nylon gears is obstructing it - it's got me stumped.

    • @shaneteacman
      @shaneteacman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alan Simons, that nylon gear can be removed with a flathead screwdriver. Once you take it off the belt can be put into position. Hope this helps!

      There is nothing left that I could tell...it was all cleaned up. Maybe a metal detector would help. The crash was in a bog. Just being at that location was something I will never forget. I met a few of the survivors and a lot of the rescuers. There were a lot of stories people told. I have an interest in these Allegheny things...I cannot believe it has been a year....please forgive me for not replying sooner. My birthmother was a stewardess on 736 and survived, my birthfather was a pilot for Allegheny. (not pilot of 736) I was the mile high baby born in 1970. As I said I have interest in Allegheny. The movie Airport 1970 is a pretty darn close depiction of how I came about...

    Very interesting! I went to the Allegheny 736 crash site in Bradford pa, the first of two crashes. my relative survived that flight. I would like to go back to Bradford one day and see if there are artifacts there. we do know the location. I am glad you all did this. there is a lot of history here, thank you, marc
