Am I overplanning? We made 3 short films to find out
My friends and I did an experiment and filmed 3 sketches with varying levels of planning. We learned that detailed planning is important, but that it's best to dive in and get started, then refine the plan as you go.

    It is an intresting concept, but I think that in general (but more specifically in creative content) the amount of time put towards a proyect has the biggest correlation to the quality of the result. An intresting experiment would be to film 3 shorts with the same amount of time to film it but allocating a different % to the planning in each. Let's say you choose 2 hours as the time: - 1) you start improving and thinking of things on the fly without planning -2) You plan for 10/20 minutes and then you improvise the rest. -3) You plan for 30/60 minutes to structure it all. Giving every strategy the same time frame would make it more fair

    • @epicmissionmedia
      @epicmissionmedia 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's fair! I think your argument is a reasonable one and I agree that would be a better way of running the test. One thing I'd add is that the expiriment taught me that how you plan is almost if not more important than how much -- planning that is closely "integrated" with the actual act of creating the film (such as going to the actual locations you are going to shoot with stand-in actors and shooting a "puke draft" version of the film on your cell phone) is much more effective, at least in the early stages, than planning that is more abstract and disconnected from the end product.

      Also FYI -- I just asked chatGPT "What do scientists say is the most effective percentage of time to dedicate towards planning a project, relative to the entire length of the project?" and this was the response: "The percentage of time recommended for planning a project varies depending on the nature of the project, the industry, and the complexity of the work involved. However, a general guideline often cited by project management experts is the "80/20 rule," also known as the Pareto Principle, where: 20% of the time is dedicated to planning and designing the project. 80% of the time is dedicated to executing and delivering the project. This rule is based on the idea that effective planning can prevent many problems later in the project, leading to a more efficient execution phase. For complex or high-risk projects, some methodologies like PRINCE2 or PMI suggest dedicating even more time to planning-up to 30-40%-to ensure that all variables and potential risks are thoroughly considered. In practice, the exact percentage can vary widely depending on factors such as the project's scope, objectives, and the experience of the project team. However, allocating a significant portion of time to planning is universally recognized as critical to the success of any project Then I asked some follow up Q's: ... For a short film, the optimal percentage of time dedicated to planning is generally around 30-40% of the total project time. This includes all pre-production activities such as: Script Development: Refining the script, storyboarding, and shot planning. Budgeting and Scheduling: Estimating costs and creating a detailed timeline. Casting and Crew Assembly: Finding the right actors and assembling your production team. Location Scouting and Permits: Securing locations and any necessary filming permits. Rehearsals and Pre-visualization: Preparing actors and crew for the shoot, including rehearsals and technical tests. Investing time in thorough planning helps ensure that the shoot and post-production phases run smoothly, reduces the risk of unexpected delays or costs, and ultimately results in a higher-quality film. ... For a feature film, the planning phase typically takes up about 40-60% of the total project time. This extensive planning period is crucial due to the complexity and scale of feature film production. Here's a breakdown of what this includes: Script Development: Refining the script, creating detailed shot lists, and storyboarding. Budgeting and Scheduling: Preparing a comprehensive budget and detailed production schedule. Casting and Crew Assembly: Finding the right actors, hiring key crew members, and assembling the full production team. Location Scouting and Permits: Securing and visiting filming locations, obtaining necessary permits, and planning logistics. Rehearsals and Pre-visualization: Conducting rehearsals with actors, blocking scenes, and running technical tests. Production Design and Set Construction: Designing sets, costumes, and props, and building any necessary physical spaces. Pre-Production Meetings: Holding meetings with department heads (e.g., cinematography, art, sound) to align the vision and plan for contingencies. The substantial time investment in pre-production allows for detailed preparation, which is essential for managing the many moving parts of a feature film, such as larger crews, more complex scenes, special effects, and longer shoot schedules. This thorough planning is key to staying on budget and on schedule, as well as ensuring that the creative vision is fully realized. Would be interesting to see if this would match real world experience.

    good job summarizing that film and interesting points. I saw a movie recently on Netflix called 'Atlas' which is a bit of a dystopian film about artificial intelligence. It makes some interesting points about what it means to be human and what a future world with AI could look like. There's been a lot of movies on the topic of AI and it would be interesting to go thru them and analyze how Hollywood portrays that idea of 'what it means to be human'.
