In Japan, I used to make Dorodango with natural soil, but in the Netherlands, it’s hard to find clay-rich soil, and collecting it is restricted. 🥲 So, I experimented with mixing materials to recreate the right soil, and it turned out beautifully! I wanted to share it because I know others might struggle to find suitable soil too. 😆✨ Since this method uses purchased soil, there’s no worry about collecting restrictions, making it stress-free to create. If you have access to natural clay-rich soil, that’s truly amazing! 😆✨

Right now, it sells occasionally for €65 ☺️✨ and people are really happy with it! For a larger piece, it might go up to $100 😆✨

The heart-shaped Dorodango shown here was made while thinking of my mother, which made it a truly special piece for me. I treasure it and have it beautifully displayed. 😆❤️ Every time I look at it, I’m reminded of her, and it has become a deeply meaningful creation close to my heart.

I actually use mica powder, not Mason’s stain! 😊✨ I’ve never tried Mason’s stain before, but I’d love to give it a shot someday! 😆⭐️⭐️ Since Dorodango is made from raw, unfired clay, I’m not sure how the color would change with Mason’s stain. Let me know if you try it out! And definitely go collect some red clay-it sounds amazing! ❤️

@@DorodangoNoriko-u3x I'm just guessing. I have plenty of mica in different colors and I haven't tried to make a dorodango it's a little cold to harvest clay here, so I'm not trying to suggest that's a better process, just thinking that a stain added to the clay might make the color deeper. ☺

They do deteriorate over time! However, I saw on Japanese TV that some Dorodango have continued to shine for 40 to 50 years! 😊✨ They had a few small chips, but they were still shining beautifully!

If you drop it, it will break! Also, since it’s raw soil, if you leave it outside and it gets wet in the rain, it will naturally return to the earth over time. But if you keep it dry, it will stay shiny forever ☺️❤️✨

@ I am wondering if I can get clay powder from my home town, as there is a well loved pottery based there that I think used local clay, and it would be quite special to be able to use that to make a dorodango.

In my experience, porcelain clay can produce an incredibly beautiful finish, but it tends to be quite firm and may be harder to knead. On the other hand, stoneware clay is softer, easier to handle, and provides a more stable way to achieve a nice shine. Both types of clay can be used to make Dorodango, but they have their own characteristics. ☺️✨ Right now, I’ve reached out to Japan’s Dorodango master and plastering artisan, Mr. Mitani, to get his expert opinion. Please wait for his reply! You can leave it out to dry just as it is! Since moisture will collect at the bottom, it’s a good idea to flip it over before kneading to ensure even drying. ✨ For the hemp cord, insert it when you first shape the heart. Make about three knots and embed the cord into the Dorodango in a way that maintains its complex shape. This will prevent it from coming out! 😆❤️ Please give it a try! Since you can’t apply pressure like with a cup, it won’t have a mirror-like finish, but it will have a soft glow, and it’s super cute!🩷🩷😆😆😆
