Episode 76: The Country Bear Jamboree
This is a look at a Disney World opening day attraction that was later added to DisneyLand, and later to Tokyo DisneyLand.
I talk about the history, the Imagineers involved, and how it works.
Then I talk about two variations of the show that came later: the Holiday Hoedown, and the Summer Vacation.
One thing I didn't mention was the "editing" of the show that happened a few years ago - management thought the show was too long, so they cut out a few songs to shorten it.

    This is completely off-topic, but about five years ago you did an audio podcast episode titled Episode #347 - The Walt Disney Radio Information station. Maybe you could revisit the subject on your video channel. It was interesting but I question the way you described its installations. Aug 13, 2019,

      That’s a throwback. 😁 I do recall doing and thanks for the suggestion. I may revisit it at some point as a video If I may, what was your thought about how I described the installations? Feel free to post a reply or hit me up at davesdisneyview@gmail.com

      Im puzzled over your description and picture pointing to the antenna on the roof, engineered to radiate downward and somehow interact with the cable below. I'm no engineer but that doesn't sound right. Maybe, or I suspect, the transmitter on the roof was a self contained unit used to cover the parking lot, and a completely different transmitter fed the cable for the roadway. ~ Which seems more likely. I've been researching LPAM and that's why it caught my attention.

      That’s a great question! I made that podcast about 5 years ago, so I can’t remember the exact details. I’ll have to go back through all the info I found (assuming I still have some bookmarked pages or notes from a guy I talked with along the way). Whatever I come up with will be in conjunction with a revisit as a part of a video. That said, I am an engineer, and I recall reviewing what I found and thinking it made good sense. It could be that I was wrong in my conclusion (I violated rule number one! Never say you’re wrong!), or perhaps I was incomplete in my explanation. I do recall that they had several radio broadcasts, so maybe the two were simulcasting rather than one feeding another (maybe?). But one of the things that drew me to this story was the fact that Disney was being wildly innovative (I mean who thinks to bury a cable next to the road for self promotion?), and I have a vague memory of them doing something rather unique with the broadcast. I guess in broadcast terms, I’ll say “stay tuned”

    • @richardpowers5477

      @@lostfoundwdw8953 Well the cable next to the road for transmitting information to drivers was not something new, the method had been used for decades (the first such installation was for the George Washington Bridge in New York in 1938, later the Lincoln Tunnel and certain stretches of highway, colleges, by the early 1970s the LAX airport had such a system in operation and so did many drive-in theaters (Cinema Radio) for the movie audio on the car radio. What Disney did with radio was notable, but the idea itself was nothing new.

    • @richardpowers5477
      @richardpowers5477 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Incidentally, these type of cable installations are/were not licensed operations, anyone can do it, its completely legit and is governed under the rules of the FCCs part 15. In fact, it was LPB who had installed Disneys system, and had petitioned the FCC to rewrite the paty 15 rules to allow a slightly greater field strength for leaky cable,, and the FCC agreed. That's not exactly how it happened, but thata the general gist of it.

    I was vacationing with my family at WDW at the time of the fatal 2009 monorail accident. The morning following the accident, word spread rapidly across the resort that a young monorail operator had been killed. We were all stunned at the news, since the WDW monorails overall have such a stellar safety record. I still have the "monorail operator" souvenir cards that cast members gave to guests who rode with the monorail pilot in the front compartment. Those were wonderful experiences, though it's fully understandable why the rules had to change. I still think of young monorail operator Austin now and again when I ride the monorails, and wish peace for him and his family.

    I love the monorail, too. And at the risk of sounding nitpicky, but the switches at the roundhouse count (though you probably couldn't catch switching operations there) and a new switch on the Epcot beam for a VERY short spur that holds a tractor in case a monorail needs to be towed on that beam. I'm sure we all wish that the system would be expanded, but it won't (beams are expensive).

      Fair enough in nitpicking. That’s why I started the discussion at the roundhouse, though I didn’t say it specifically. Yeah the tractor spur was an addition they made relatively recently; that I didn’t mention that but should have. Hey! A reason to make another video. 😁 And … the cost … that’s why they built the monorail beams for Epcot on site. The facility is still there. Just saying.

    I'm so glad I came across this video. Growing up in the 70s and 80s my family went to Disney every year, and I loved the House of Magic. I looked forward to going there as much as any attraction. I still have things I bought there -- my first "real" cups and balls set, a change bag, a few books, and probably a few other items in the bottom of a box somewhere. It's where my curiosity about magic turned into a lifetime passion. When I went back to Disney as an adult in 1999, I was more disappointed to find that the House of Magic was gone than I was to see that 20,000 Leagues was no longer in operation.

    Even though “spiel” does have an existing definition in English dating from the late 19th century meaning “long extravagant speech” or a “sales pitch”, the actual reason may be due to the German design of the original Alweg monorails at Disneyland. There was a button labeled “Spiel”on the driver’s control panel, German for “Play” which triggered the next announcement cued on the tape loop.

      I can remember the words TTC being in use in the early 80s. Of course, they changed the plan and built an Epcot parking lot. But that was still the hub for transportation. So it wasn’t the “main entrance”

But for context, when the state “changed how Disneys improvement district runs” or perhaps “took control of Disney” - they actually only made two changes. The name changed and how members get elected was altered (some are appointed, and they no longer come from the two cities where employees live) Yes that does modify how this all works to a point. Their were hopes that part of WDW 50th anniversary celebration in 2021 would showcase at least one of these new drains, but with the 2020 pandemic and Disney bleeding money, nothing eve came of it. Now, the WDW monorail system is in many ways a hot city bus, with the same amount of dirt, grime and odor.

      It is truly shocking and surprising the fleet is held together with duct tape at this point… here’s to hoping they spend a little of the $60 billion at Disney world on new trains!

    With automobiles, "Mark" indicates a generation model, such as the Lincoln Continental Mark I or the Toyota Supra MK IV. I always figured this was the same logic with the monorail.

    • @lostfoundwdw8953
      @lostfoundwdw8953 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That could be. And actually that may be based on the concept of the makers mark now that I think about it. Like I said, I wasn’t / am not sure.

      @@lostfoundwdw8953 1:25 As you mentioned, you could ask Bob Gurr, the creator of the original Disneyland Monorail. He's still around and very active in his 90s!

      Sadly... Its looking like a lost cause, so I'll have to go to "plan b" and create some new / different content about the monorail. TH-cam is funny that way, but its the cost of doing business I suppose.

      Thank you. It’s no small feat. But I like to think of it as a labor of love in a way. I have all this information rattling around in my head, but it really takes time to confirm those thoughts, and have them make sense. Plus, there’s always something new to learn along the way. 😉 As for this video…I’m hopeful that it will work itself out. If not, I have some thoughts about what I can do to replace it in a way. Stay tuned I guess.

    I was there August 13, 1971. They brought me on to Disney a couple of days early, so sent me to the Hilton for 5 or 6 days until the Contemporary was ready. Most all the employees there were paid by Hilton, with promises to move to Disney eventually. I, and my still friend Mike were actually on Disney payroll.

    1971 Kissimmee was not ready for the Diz employees looking for housing, let alone tourists. A true cow town. Kissimmee reminded me of Council Grove, Kansas. You really really have to look for the cow town roots today. On 192, the only building that I recognize today is the Lutheran Church. It sat so far back in it's property that it's still there. If they add another lane, it will be gone. That is where you turned to Tara Apartments, which is still there as of a couple of years ago. That was the first decent apartment complex in Kissimmee, early 72. We were so happy to finally get decent housing..

    I was on the opening crew of the East Winds Chinese junk. It was a floating bar that spent most of it's time docked at Polynesian. We did take charters out sometimes. The outfit I worked for was Remote Foods. We also did the bar service on the side wheels, wich you show one here. This was in 1972. I had transferred in from Contemporary hotel food service. None of us on the junk had "pixie dust in their eyes" as the saying went. All where experienced. Two of my best friends come from the junk crew. Good times.

      @@lostfoundwdw8953 There is a junk photo I had and lost. It is a publicity photo of Mayor Carl T Langford at a birthday party he had on the junk. I believe it was published by the employee newsletter. It was available on line, but I can't find it anymore. If you happen to see it, let me know please. I am in that photo, the Life "Walt Disney World opens" Oct 15, 1971 cover, and another photo called "Disney World's famous chefs" that I had forgotten about. I saw it at the 30th anniversary. I and my friend Mike are on each end, which is funny because we were stewards, not chefs. They just stuck to toques on our head. Our friend Gordy, the tall guy in the center, was a world famous chef. He lives in the Joshua Tree area of California. All 3 of us on on the Life cover.

    Center street on the emporium side was removed for a couple of reasons…1) it was removed to create a larger contiguous area where people can shelter in case of inclement weather, and 2) to provide a “bypass” for Main Street when parades or nighttime spectaculars are occurring without having to route guests through backstage areas.
