OVERNIGHT FISH AND CRAB MISSION | Catch and Cook
What has been your favourite overnight trip on the boat? This was our first time sleeping on the water and we decided to do it in Pumicestone Passage Bribie Island. The target was bream, flathead, grunter and mud crabs, with the goat to have a decent feed on the boat. Did it all go to plan? Let's find out.

    You should just buy the wiring kit from kings, it comes with the correct wire size and a maxi fuse. So many people bag kings stuff but they themselves are usually the reason the component failed. I have one of these 40A dc-dc units and it is great and never gets warm let alone hot. If you are gonna wire in something do your research.

    I’d probably be a little careful. Pretty defamatory video title considering you’re most likely the fault not the product. They’re a legit multi hundred million dollar company and they probably don’t love false accusations. But up to you bro. But Ye 10+ year sparky in large commercial and having wired multiple forbys / Race cars. You’ve undersized you wiring. Insulation and copper is only rated so far, you’ve exceeded it. You can download a Maximum demand calculator or do the maths yourself and work out Cable size that way. Copper is cheap, cars aren’t.

      @@einfelder8262 It’s constructive Criticism. All I’m suggesting is there is a million free tools within google to work out a suitable gauge wire for your application. I own a patrol , I enjoy seeing other young dudes in the field having a crack. I don’t wanna see another young Aussie dude lose his 4x4 due to an electrical fire. The only dumb question is the one you don’t ask, him going on google and using a super basic free tool is something he can do for the rest of his life and it’ll guide him pretty god damn efficiently. Kings also admitted it was there previous ones with the failure. Not the newly released 40 amp. I’ve installed quite a lot of kings gear and it’s generally pretty good electrical quality I’ve found for the price point. At the end of the day, I’m offering advice from an experienced position. This has me a bit worried as I just installed one of these last week. Well, my dad installed it and I watched because if I did it, the ute would have burst into flames by now. In my setup though, the charger is less than 30cm away from the auxiliary battery and the cable from the alternator is fused at both ends with inline midi fuses. I'm also running a shunt and monitor. As for the size of the cable from the crank battery to the DC to DC charger? Not sure, as it was from my dad who had it left over from wiring up his caravan. I believe it was 8mm/75amp cable. With 40amp fuses at either end, it's not the weakest link so I'm not concerned about that. My alternator only puts out about 30 amps, so short of getting struck by lightning, I don't see that being a problem. The sketchy capacitors thing is not good news. How likely it is to be an issue is anyone's guess. It would be interesting to know how much current yours was drawing when it cooked off though. I do have some more wiring to do. I am wanting to put in an outlet panel (one of the kings ones with voltage, two cigarette lighter outlets and dual USBs) into a home made centre console. Any tips regarding practicality, routing wires or anything else that seems relevant, I'm all ears. At the moment, it is at concept phase, so if there's a better way of getting power from the aux battery in the rear of the cab in a 1996 Holden Rodeo, I'd love to know.

    • @joemurrayau
      @joemurrayau 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I bought the charger in January and was told that the problem capacitors had been upgraded since so hopefully it'll be more reliable for you. Sounds like you're a few steps ahead of me anyway with the charger being close to the battery and your cables being a bit beefier. My only concern would be is the 30amps that's coming from your alternator enough to power the charger? I'm pretty new to getting 12v setups right so it may not be a problem at all.

    Install error. Always read the instructions. Need at least 6B&S or 100amp equivalent. Not only that but at least wire in a maxi fuse from your alternator. I advise wiring in a smoke detector like they do in campers as well.

    • @joemurrayau
      @joemurrayau 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

  • @einfelder8262
    @einfelder8262 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm a bit confused with your setup. You have dual batteries under the bonnet, and a DC-DC charger right down the back. Are you charging the under bonnet battery with the DC-DC? If yes, the installation is flawed because of the huge long cable runs. You said you used 50A wire, which is too small even from the alternator the the charger - if you are then running another 50A wire to the battery up front it won't charge much if at all due to severe voltage drop. If you have a third battery close to the DC-DC charger it's OK to hook that up with 50A cable but you still need bigger wire from the front as well as resettable circuit breaker up the front. Kings gear is generally OK if you are happy with 7/10 quality and performance. Unlucky with the dodgy 40A unit but not surprising that a Chinese factory would substitute garbage cheap capacitors even if a good one was specified by the designer. Note too that not many AGM batteries will take 40A charge, 25A stops most. If you can afford it, a nice setup is a Renogy 50A DC-DC Charger with MPPT. It will charge your rear battery from solar panel and/or alternator, and when parked and your rear battery is full, it will charge your start battery and keep it topped up. I have this setup with the two batteries up front wired in parallel for winching, and a third battery in the rear. GU CRD like yours.

    • @joemurrayau
      @joemurrayau 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Since the charger failed I've learned that there is a few problems with my setup and I wish I spent more time planning it before installed it all... That's why I'm not sure if I'll actually re-install it at this stage. I've found Kings more reliable than others, but I was waiting for the day that a piece of my kings kit would stop working. If it's only a 40A charger, is there an issue if the cable is only 50A? Does that not allow enough current through? Sorry I'm pretty new to all this, appreciate your insights!

    • @einfelder8262
      @einfelder8262 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@joemurrayau 50A cable will carry 40A but what you need to avoid is voltage drop over distance. To go from the alternator in the Patrol to the rear where you had the DC-DC charger to carry up to 50A safely (4.5m-6.0m cable length) you will need 2 core AWG 4 (22mm2) cable for 3% voltage drop. Always run earth and active, don't use the body/chassis for earthing. This is quite a fat cable and not cheap. 50A cable for a 1m distance is still AWG 6 (13mm2), still thicker than you would think. I'll try a link enerdrive dotcomdot au/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Cable-Chart.pdf

    Tips- Do the oil filter from the wheel arch, make sure its bottoms out on the block. Hold the oil bottle sideways so it does 'glob' everywhere when filling engine. You must clean the maf sensor every service. Put a 600ml bottle on the oil filter drip tray hose when taking off oil filter. Putting oil on the oring is purely so it doesn't catch and tear on a dry surface, nothing to do with seizing later on. Do not prefil fuel filters, could cost you thousands. Use a magnet stick to get the drain plug out if it goes in the oil. Change the sump plug washer every service And check wheel bearings and general vehicle condition. I rotate my tyres during a service as well.

      Because that fuel goes straight into fuel system with no filtration, so if the fuel is even slightly contaminated you could be in trouble
