Some of my exploits in model railroading. It was geared towards my SP Toledo Branch layout, but since that is now in storage, my focus will be on my modeling projects with some GEHAMS club footage tossed in.
My channel is more of a “when I feel like posting” type vs a weekly or other scheduled upload, so don’t think that I am not interested in the TH-cam community if a month or year go by between uploads, but I am going to try to upload more often than in the past.

As much as I hate the thought of the Southern Pacific Railroad becoming and "assimilation of the Borg," the few years after "Uncle Pete" took over the joint were pretty interesting, at least for railfanning. Paint scheme's galore, lease units, old "junk" power everywhere... Combining a few "foreign road" units with a new microphone setup and ESU Loksound 5 decoders, I bring you part 2 of the So...

Does the beacon flash on the DRGW 5405?
Great video. Would love to see the difference in sound with your experiment. Gotta love scaletrains detail.. Amazing.
Nice locomotive... VERY nice review!
Makes the Intermountain’s look like trash!!
With those DC/DCC Ready units, is there any gyralight action?
No. All directional lights come on solid when powered on the DC/DCC ready models. The lighting effects are produced by the decoder themselves. Once a decoder is installed, the CVs pertaining to the headlight effects can be adjusted.
I’m getting a hypotypical ET44 soon. Good video, friend!
Those are some impressive locos
Hey Joe, I got a question. I noticed when you were operating an Espee manifest that you had very different tank car couplers than the standard Kadee shelf ones. What is the type of coupler you used on those cars, because I need some pretty badly.
Josh, they are Kadee 119, SE Shelf type "scale" couplers. If you couple them together, bring a toothpick with you to uncouple them.
@@joegartman8859 Alrighty thank you! I’ll keep the toothpicks handy!
EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Any sound equipped loco with the room for it, gets one of these on my layout. I cannot say enough good about them. I can also appreciate the "help" from your feline assistant. Love the purring. I only have issues when a hot soldering iron is involved... Fiddling with the Tsunami 2 Equalizer also adds much to the equation. I'm only 4 minutes in, so you may already address that facet. Thanks for the good work!
I also have found the SSS speakers are so much more efficient that I have to reduce the system volume by up to 50% to mitigate the ear pain...
Your end credits crack me up!
I am running all ESU decoders. Between the bass/treble "tone control" adjustments and fiddling with individual sound volumes and pitch adjustments, they dial in similar to the Soundtrax equalizer. Ya, the cat.. he can go all day without wanting much, but as soon as I sit at the bench for any reason, he wants all the attention he can get...
@@joegartman8859 I have pretty much standardized on the TSU2200's. The jungle of their multi-layer CV's is hard to navigate, (I think the tech manuals run to almost 400 pages) but I have been able to find my way out, fairly well. To me, the ESU wilderness is even worse. My head hurts when reading tech manuals written in German English... Upside of all this, JT Burke is a blessing.
Does any big hobby shop sell these speakers? I am from Europe and would be nice to combine an order of speaker with more items like locos etc., so the shipping etc is justified.
As far as I know, they are only sold directly.
Excellent Southern Pacific trains!
I prefer these speakers over stock speakers any day JT make awesome speakers 🔊 that just my opinion great share and video enjoy the rest of your day 😎🚂🫵
I agree, after a little sound tweaking and a trip around the club layout, I was sold.
Really appreciate this tutorial, especially because I'm planning my first layout, and waiting for my first locomotive - ATH SW1500 - with a sound decoder (Loksound 5 with a power pack), or any other kind of decoder.
I remember seeing this train there.
Awesome tutorial! * subscribed *
Coal hopper, fixation?? My second favorite, to oil tankers. Very long, Santa Fe consignment. Love it😉!!! What scale is this???
Oooooohhhhh, dont want me knowing what i would do with those locomotives.... America latina Logistica or Rumo....
What brand of string are you using ?
Nice motive power! I like the operating oil pump.
“Foamervision” Love it Lookin good!
Very nice bridges on the layout.
Nice👍🏽
Beautiful work
Like what you did. Especially the fact that it takes looooong to make customized lumbers and fit them on a centerbeam flat car. For those who don't know all the work behind it, take notes please.
Great video. Dave wonderful presentation.
For those that like putting the banding on bundles like this , plywood would have 3 bands per bundle.
Nicely done,,thanks for sharing..😊
I wounder is this N scale layout and trains I hope it is because I like N scale trains and layout I have been in N scale trains for 45 Years now And i love it still
Great share really enjoyed the video. Nice scenery work on the layout 😎🚂🫵TSM
Some Decoders have audio equalisers built in.Plus reverb adjust.Plus pitch shift.
Great share cool layout and I enjoyed the tuning up the locomotives 👍🏻 Have a great rest of your day
Now that was a great day and no one can take it away from you.
They came out great but you had me afraid that you were going to build the loads from the 2x4s you were cutting. That could have been a long video, lol.
Great loads!
It’s a Do over. Remember how great Do overs were when we were kids?
I waited a year so it wouldn’t be too soon… at least she didn’t get half of the layout, lol.
Have you ever tried BLI and their Rolling Thunder for the bass under the benchwork? I wonder if you can add that interface to other brands for the bone shaking bass? Those adjustments really helped the sound.
Nicely done! Definite improvement on the sound quality. I'm just starting down the model railroading rabbit hole and am primarily sticking with LokSound decoders. Just another reason why I'm glad I am focusing on ESU. Now if we can just get ESU to develop a BlueTooth controllable decoder... 😁 Thanks for sharing - very helpful 🤠
Thanks for showing this. Just updated my LocProgrammer. Now to remember which Locos are V5. I think I know the V4’s. 😊
Good to know. Up till now, I was extracting each sound wav by playing and recording them individually then adjusting them in a third-party sound editing program. Then inserting them back into the esu sound file. The results are amazing. I model 1/29 scale and make sealed ported subwoofers out of the fule tanks for the heavy bass and alternate speakers under the radiator fans for the hi range. The bass is massive and actually does rumble with a deep rich drumming, even at idle you can feel the vibration. I can't wait to try this new method. As a little girl it was the unexplainable power in sound that drew me to become a rivet counting train freak. Thank you for this video. 😊
Thanks for the demonstration Joe. The new Loksound feature of tone control is a big help. It makes dialing in sound much easier. Using Scale Sound System speakers on my stuff and will need to check your speaker guy out. Looks like the Trona is home to some of the last good EMD sounds in the west. Nice job on this video
Nice detail.
Awesome presentation and great tips 👍 sorry I missed it
the rust under the dynamic brake grids is from them overheating. sometimes it was so bad the grids melted and the walkway was covered with what looked like melted solder. it looked like it. run 8 dynamic braking clear down through reno ! great video
Thanks Joe. Dave is a master scenery creator. He and I have ben friends for over 25 years. His techniques are innovative, and the results are remarkable.
Thanks for doing this Joe. Your photos and videos of my models are better than mine! I hope this video helps people with ideas on their own weathering projects. Thanks to everyone at the Bakersfield club for opening the doors for the SPH&TS and letting us run trains… Dave
Dave! You’ve totally ‘influenced’ me!!!! Fantastic presentation. Thank you!!!!
Nice job on the video! The helix spaghetti bowl is a favorite location on this layout. The train looks great Bill, nice seeing a train on TH-cam with weathered locomotives and freight cars.
Watched your lumber load series…really nice work…may try that sometime…nice railfanning on the club layout
