Kolasinski's Physical Chemistry
United States
This channel contains video tutorials to support students who are studying physical chemistry. They are based on the book Physical Chemistry: How Chemistry Works (ISBN 978-1-118-75112-1), by Kurt W Kolasinski, who is a professor of physical chemistry at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. His dedication to effective teaching and the writing of texts that impart knowledge is derived from his broad experience at the borders of physics and chemistry, surface science and nanomaterials. He is the author of over 100 scholarly publications as well as the textbooks Surface Science: Foundations of Catalysis and Nanoscience and Physical Chemistry: How Chemistry Works. These tutorials cover statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, reaction mechanisms, surface science, and quantum mechanics.
Ch 12 Constructing Phase Diagrams
Phase diagrams report where phases are stable and the conditions under which two or more phases can coexist at equilibrium. In this video we will define the triple point, critical point and coexistence boundaries such that you can correctly interpret and use phase diagrams.

Ch 12 Measuring Chemical Potential Via Vapor Pressure
The chemical potential for solids and liquids can be measured by measuring their equilibrium vapor pressure.
Lab Video: Heterogeneous Equilibrium
The ammonium carbamate equilibrium with CO2 and NH3 is investigated. Temperature dependent pressure measurements are analyzed to obtain the equilibrium constant as well as the changes in Gibbs energy, enthalpy and entropy. This video also instructs you in how to use Igor Pro to analyze the data. And for those who take CRL 341, it gives some tips on the proper writing of a lab report.
Ch 12 Phase Stability and Phase Transitions
Matter can exist in several different phases, the most familiar of which are solids, liquids and gases. Systems at equilibrium maintain the lowest possible chemical potential and the chemical potential of a system is equal everywhere. If two phases are in equilibrium, their chemical potential must be the same. We can use the characteristics to describe the phase behavior of matter as a function...
Ch 11 Self Assembly: The making of Langmuir films, micelles, liposomes and bilayers
Self assembly is the process by which a system spontaneously forms ordered structures. Here we discuss the thermodynamics of the transformation of disordered amphiphiles into ordered structures such as Langmuir films, micelles, liposomes and bilayers.
Lab Video: Metal Assisted Catalytic Etching (MACE) of Silicon Poweder
This video takes you through the procedure to create porous silicon with a tunable pore size distribution using Cu-assisted MACE of silicon powder.
Writing your own function for curve fitting
Igor Pro allows you to write and edit custom functions for curve fitting.
Ch 27 High Harmonic Generation
The generation of attosecond pulses and following electron dynamics in real time is the subject of the 2023 Noble Prize in Physics awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier. Here we describe some advances in lasers and a simple semi-classical Three Step Model that describes high harmonic generation (HHG), which is used to produce attosecond pulses. (Updated with more recent ...
Laser ablation is used to make black silicon
Laser ablation performed over a narrow power density range leads to spontaneous structure formation. Laser ablation pillars are survivor strucures that preferentially forward scatter light and therefore look black because of their low reflectivity.
Ch 24 What is a Chemical Bond?
Different models of a chemical bond allow us to characterize different aspects of molecules and deliver increasingly accurate descriptions of what causes the formation of chemical bonds, what they are made of, and what their strength is. Moving from rigid rotors to harmonic and anharmonic oscillators we set the stage for rough quantum approximations (valence bond model) and finally the accurate...
Ch 27 Photosynthesis: Energy Transfer Dynamics
Photons are effeciently absorbed and transformed into excited state electrons that are required to initiate photosynthetic reactions. These reactions are essential for the life processes of plants and bacteria. Ultrafast energy exchange dynamics explain how the localized absorption of photon goes through a series of delocalization and relocalization process to generate energetic electrons in th...
Ch 27 Color Generation and Color Vision
Various chemical and physical phenomena give rise to color generation. This video explores these mechanisms and how the eye uses photo-induced isomerization to interpret photon absorption as color.
Ch 27 Femtochemistry: Following chemical reactions in real time
Using ultrafast lasers with pulsewidths of a few picoseconds to a few femtoseconds, it is possible to follow the breaking of chemical bonds in real time. This video discusses ultrafast spectroscopy and how it can be used to probe the transition state of a reaction.
Ch 21 Quantum Mechanical Spin
Quantum mechanical spin does not correspond to rotational or orbital motion as does classical spin. Instead, it is an intrinsic property of a particle. Nonetheless, spin is a form of angular momentum and it share a set of commutation and eigenvalue equations that are analogous to other forms of angular momentum.
Ch 21 Introduction to Angular Momentum
Angular momentum is associated with whirling, rotating and spinning bodies. The rotational motion of molecules and the motion of electrons in orbitals share many common aspects in how they are treated quantum mechanically. This video introduces you to the quantum behavior of angular momentum vectors and their eigenvalue equations.
