I've heard a lot that unwanted suggestions (especially ones that the subject is conscious of) will fade away even without hypnotic aid. So then, why would a hypnotic seal stick if the subject wants to discard it? I'm looking to learn more about subject agency because I find it very confusing. Hypnotists tend to say that subjects always have complete agency, but then they also emphasise the importance of safety net suggestions, backdoors, consent etc. If the former is true then I can't imagine the latter being necessary.

Our brains are associative; we remember things by their connections to other things. The more you think of something, the more associations you end up with. As you say, best to think of something else to crowd it out. The more you think "stop smoking," the more you think the word "smoking."

My dad always says "Don't think of a pink elephant." and there you are... stuck with the image of a pink elephant.
