CASIO fx-991CW Classwiz - Beware of its flawed Scientific Notation implementation
I watched one of Edward Shore's videos and in the comments was someone (kudos to @MartinBeerbom ) mentioning this very issue. I made a mental note that I wanted to investigate this. Later I was using the calculator to do a calculation where I expected a number less than zero, but ended up with a huge number. I then realized what was going on and that this was the very issue the commenter had brought up. I am disappointed that CASIO would release a calculator with this sort of flaw. Hopefully, it is something they will correct at some point.
Here's @MartinBeerbom well written comment:
"One of the most problematic for me (a calculator user for over 40 years; if you only learned this one, things may vary) is the changed behavior of the "x10^n" button, which replaces the "E" button. In the past (that is, ALL calculators made in the past who had this functionality) this button was used to enter an exponent in scientific notation which was part of the number you entered. Now it's actually a product, with the exponent of the ten NOT part of the number. (Entering "1/3x10 3" gave in the past 1/3000, entering "1/3x10³" now gives 1000/3. The labeling printed on the button remains almost identical.) This makes many calculations in physics more clunky and requires more attention to details like extra brackets."

Using the TI-36X Pro solver to find the unknown upper bound of a definite integral

Something very impressive that the TI-36X Pro and the CASIO fx-991EX are able to do: find the unknown upper bound of a definite integral required to provide a desired result (i.e. area under the curve). What is not impressive (well, I guess it actually is impressive, but not in a good way) is how long it takes the TI-36X Pro to do this 3 minutes and 41 seconds! But, it did figure it out!

    HP 48 may be slower, with less apps but way easier to use (less key strokes for all functions). I have a HP Prime and it sits gathering dust. It is so easy to do either Base or Unit conversion on the HP48. There are so many key entries for simple unit or base conversion, it is just a joke!

    • @scottcollins7513
      @scottcollins7513 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Prime lacked elegance in my view. Great technology, but lacks the cohesiveness of the 28/48 calculators. That might just be b/c I am the wrong generation for it. Sounds like your experience is similar. Thanks for weighing in on the conversation.

    • @bicqtran
      @bicqtran หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@scottcollins7513 The Prime is a Windows GUI math app masquerading as a calculator on a small screen . There is no reason for a calculator to have a drop down menu with multiple layers to call a function. Prime fails to be a decent math app (for that I can use either MatLab or Octave) or a good calculator. As a calculator hp48 reigns supreme with its simplicity and elegance of layout.

  • @StanleytheCat-v8z

    It would be more accurate to say the Sharp solves for zero. As such instead of typing: 2x=3 You can do: (2x)-(3) It'll solve it.

    • @scottcollins7513
      @scottcollins7513 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My DM42 works the same way as the Sharp. It works fine even if it is a touch less literal. If you are strong in math, you can make any of these calculators do the job. But, if you are a high school student for whom math is not your natural "language", then the more straight-forward and literal the calculator is, the better. Thanks for the comments. A few questions: 1 - Do you live in a country where the TI-30X Pro MathPrint (make sure it is a "MathPrint") is available for around the same price? Even though I have traditionally preferred CASIO (and even SHARP), I like the TI best for this type of calculator. But, if your only option is the TI-36X Pro, it is less compelling b/c it is just an old design. 2 - Would you prefer the benefit fewer keystrokes to get to the answer at the cost of being less user-friendly? Or, do you like the benefit of user-friendly at the cost of things taking more keystrokes to answer? My personal GENERAL preference would be: 1st - TI-30X Pro MathPrint 2nd - CASIO fx-115ES PLUS 2nd Edition 3rd - CASIO fx-991EX 4th - TI-36X Pro My personal PRECALC-specific preference would be: 1st - TI-30X Pro MathPrint 2nd - CASIO fx-991EX 3rd - CASIO fx-991CW 4th - CASIO fx-115ES PLUS 2nd Edition

    This one is the only function I miss in TI. I don't know why they do not introduce it. I know TI is stuck at the 90's. I still prefer it because it's easier to me, is more logical. But for someone who works daily with 10^x numbers this is very useful (even if probably more useful for students because after a bit i guess the jumps will be as easy as counting from 1 to 10, but don't know)

    • @scottcollins7513

      I think the TI-36X Pro is respectable. The TI-30X Pro Mathprint is better (but hard to get in US). But, no need to make excuses for liking either one -- they are solid. I have not needed the ENG Notation, but understand where it would be useful if trying to express numbers in different units. Seems like something TI could add without too much difficulty. Thanks for weighing in.

      @@goneman2195 It does not have the QR-code graphing ability, but I do not view that as an important feature. Otherwise, I cannot think of anything important that it is missing that the 991EX has. Also, TI has a much better way of reusing previous expressions and answers -- it is just superior. Also, when you turn off the TI, you do not lose any of your work. It is better - period in my view. AND, I am NOT a TI fanboy. I have traditionally favored CASIO over TI. But, if you can get the TI-30X Pro MathPrint (and make sure it is the "MathPrint" version) for around the same price as the 991EX, you would be very happy w/ it, I think.
