UTMB 2023 - The story of a shutdown
The last miles of the race I needed to dig really deep just to reach the last check point of the race where I eventually decided to drop.
I tried almost everything to fight my GI distress that started bothering me already after 15km of the race. After the 20th km of the race the nausea added to the equation and the vomiting sensations never left me during the rest of the race.
My energy intake wasn't there. It was insignificant if compared to the effort.
During my 110km of the race I managed to consume:
- 5 energy gels
- 1lt of energy drink
- 1 Moonvalley energy bar
- 2 cups of soup
- 60gr of pasta.
That's it!
Amazingly, drinking water was never an issue. At least I could rinse my body after the "emptying process"....
I was really sad of the necessity to leave the race. But I was shaking, could not focus and my sight was compromised. That was simply not the place to play hero and push for more 60km.
At the end of the day I have to be happy with this new record for me: I raced for 100km in the Alps with almost no fuel in my body! How crazy is that!? :)
The mountain will hopefully accept my presence again in the future and I will have more luck in the process. This time the failure was not the result of my error like in 2019.
I will be back. I love the race and the whole feeling of the race.
I love less the new UTMB concept and the price that the athletes need to pay just to be into the race. It doesn't help the sport and it forces the athletes to participate in races that are expensive, tough to enter and there is always the need to travel a lot. It's not nature-friendly.... not anymore. And this is something that is sad to me....
Still, we do love the sport. I will race some local races in 2024, enjoy the trails in Sweden and perhaps do one or two races abroad. We'll see about that...
Feel free to follow my evolution.... I'm just 50 years young! ;)
HUGE thanks to my family for the immense support, my friends and Glenn that shared the first 85k of the race with me...

I decided to share a few thoughts with you guys before the UTMB race. I went dark the last months from this platform. GI issues, the great unknown of ultra running - what works one race just lets you down the next. Such a shame as you were well ahead of the cutoffs, it was just too long a race to keep going without food. Hopefully you'll be back to complete it next time.

    • @aramis.sasinka
      @aramis.sasinka 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanx m8. Yeah, I did everything that I had in my knowledge to be able to find some remedy to fix or alleviate the problem. Unfortunately nothing worked. Yes, I'm usually faster than the cutoffs, but at the last stop I had just like 15 minutes to the cutoff and I was shaking, seeing double and was quite dizzy. I had no energy left,not even for a try. The only safe option left was to DNF. Everything else would be a hazardous play with my own health. It's just not worth it. These things happen. In my opinion, this time it was a psychological thing that affected me way too much and compromised the race. I could never relax during the race and enter in my own (usual) running mode. We'll see, I might give the UTMB another try. There are many lovely races out there, much cheaper than the UTMB with less "drama" involved. Still, the start of the UTMB race is unique, and just being there, living those first km of the race is worth the money and the effort. Everything else is just pleasure for us that are not part of the elite runners group out there. :)

      Thanx m8! This feedback means a lot to me. I will be racing in November and I will do a shorter 50k race first and a 85k race the week after. The weather here in Sweden may be really challenging but I have a goal. I want to improve and prove to myself that everything is possible. Setbacks happen, errors happen.... failure is a part of the process as long as we keep evolving doing the things that we love. Running is the sport that I love and that helped me so much in my life. Competing is something else. So much can and probably will happen. We just need to deal with what is in front. Sometimes things will go great, other times I will drown to the bottom. There will always be sunshine after rain.... 😉

    Sorry that your UTMB experience went like this. Thanks for sharing anyway, it's nice to not only see the successes at these races that makes you forget how bloody tough they are. It is a shame that this iconic race is pretty much unachievable if not physically, but financially for most.

    • @aramis.sasinka
      @aramis.sasinka ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for this comment! I appreciate it! Yeah, you got this right. The struggle to be there at the start line of the UTMB is tough and the financial part is crazy indeed. Not many of us are lucky enough to be able to pay almost 1000 euro to participate in such event. When I got the spot I decided not to apply for other races in order to focus just on the specific UTMB training, get better after my injuries but also the financial part was a part of that decision. Thankfully I don't have issues with such fees, but I don't feel it's OK for the sport. The "normal" people, that love the sport are much penalized with this. I suppose that the beauty of the sport is penalized with the new UTMB system. This is why I do race small local races here in Sweden where I like to support the local events and share trails with local runners without killing my bank account. Just for fun and the sport..... I feel great after such races and the race result is less important. Still, the UTMB is a special race, it attracts the best athletes of the planet and it's a privilege top be there. Just to be in Chamonix at the start of the race is amazing. We'll see if I will return. I guess I will.... I have some "unfinished business"! 😆😉

Still, I'm quite impressed that I could run a half marathon with no issues with these brand new shoes. Actually I noticed that my feet got a little bit squeezed and tight but no blisters after all. I did 3000km in the Glycerin15 and the same with the Glicerin16! I purchased the 17 and have huge expectations! We'll see how it goes! :D I'm really "supermega" happy with the Glycerine and I'm using them quite a lot. Well, 3000km in one year it's almost like a statement to the quality of the product! ;)

      Hej! Shit, svarar på detta efter 3 år! Sjukt! Sorry! Hur som, barnen var typ från 8 till 12 år gamla. Det blir kanske mer framöver men det är mkt svårt att planera nåt vettigt nu med pandemin....
