Hi, comals r hard to find, they basically have to be made, I've been keeping an eye out for u. I found a guy on Facebook market place who actually makes them and sells them. He has them under "Wok's & Comal's" He lives somewhere out here in Tucson, if u wanna look him up on Facebook market place. He has pictures of different sizes. They actually look pretty nice.

Love me some fried bread! Also known as 'depression bread' as white people escaping the Dust Bowl during the 30s would fry up dough because they didn't have ovens to bake in while migrating to CA. Sadly, Indian fried bread is controversial. Native peoples started making it after the US gov't started giving people food as they were moved to reservations, where Indigenous people did not have their native food staples. They made due with using wheat flour vs. corn. They were given oil & sugar, also not native, to improvise food to survive.

I grew up making tortillas with my aunts just like these in Sonora, Mexico. When I visit my family I will go down to the mercado to buy them freshly made and having been 'cooked' over an open flame on a domed griddle. The smell of the tortillas cooking is heavenly. On a side note, I was over at a friends house making pizza. She had a rolling pin out and I just could not roll it out. My instincts kicked in and I was able to make the pizza dough into a perfect circle using the tortilla making method. I was able to 'slap out' 8 pizzas while they were rolling out one!

So if I were, say, abandoned by my native mother and family to be raised by my white catholic savior dad, where would I find a recipe? Or is this another "family" thing I'll never know about, like language and history?
