E35 - Trailer: The John Peel Biopic (2024)
I like this one, it's a bit new and fresh despite the depression - depress-fresh! It sounds interesting after what came before, they had done the old sound to death as the 80's wore on, so it's an interesting change, progression wise. It's fun too, lots of variation.
Not sure why you keep banging on about Mark's "lazy delivery", he's maturing, he's not forever gonna sound like he did on totally wired. I always thought of this and the next few albums as his Lou Reed phase. All good though, love you guys!
Yeah, its interesting to hear that perspective/interpretation as well. Some other listeners have also told us they hear him 'phoning it in', while others are aligned with what you are hearing-- that's the great part listening to The Fall, in general. It may also come down to the mix on this album, and the way his vocals sit in there. Related, I just read that MES was struggling, health-wise, with seizures at the time, so it may have (assumption:) influenced his vocal delivery in some aspect. The next time I re-listen to this one, I'm going to put it in the Lou Reed context (obviously one of his inspirations; vocally/lyrically), which will be a fun future listen.
As usual what is interesting is the way you get things so wrong. Well done!
Keep listening, we're sure to get worse! Enjoy mate.
@@WeAreTheFallPod Looking forward to Shiftwork, a personal fave.
Agreed. The Shift-work / Code: Selfish 1-2 punch should be a fun ride. Get the ‘machines’ warmed up.
The B-side, extra track version on Butterfies 4 Brains (Whizz Bang) has less violin on there.
Which one do you like?
@@WeAreTheFallPod Really like em both - there's a whole bunch of B-sides for Extricate, almost like a whole alt-albums worth of stuff actually
Yeah we’re actually planning on getting into some of those as well.
@@WeAreTheFallPod Do it man, is it possible to have enough Fall??
The common themes running through the Totales Turns album are Spiritualism, Religion and Drug Abuse 😮
The drunk intruder coming into Mark’s house during the recording of New Puritan was a Ghost from the other side.
Haha! I like that a lot more ('There's a Puritan Ghost in my House').
John Peel was a PDF file.
Hey Marc Riley🎙️‼️
Was this show at Victoria University?
Yes, it was. I believe in the Union Hall of Victoria University, from what we've read.
@@WeAreTheFallPod Yes, the show was in the Union Hall. It was broadcast live on the student Radio Active. I was at the gig. The opening acts were Riot 111 and (I think) Naked Spots Dance. I believe, for The Fall's Christchurch concert, The Clean opened for them!
@@WeAreTheFallPod I saw Fugazi there. Ian MacKaye punched a guy in the face for trying to dance.
@@calstonjew @WeAreTheFallPod 54 seconds ago Glad Marc Riley wasn't at that Fugazi gig!
How old r these bloody yanks
I don't know if it's deliberate, but both Vixen and LA reference Russ Meyer films. Vixen is the name of one of his films, and the line "This is my happening, and it freaks me out" is from Meyer's Beyond The Valley of the Dolls. Actually, the latter is a deliberate quote, so it's hard to believe its pairing with Vixen is an accident.
Yeah, totally. Brix's favorite film! So understandable in her placing that line in L.A.-- never knew that Vixen was also (possibly) a Russ Meyer reference as well. That's cool. Makes sense being the first X-rated film-- probably intriguing to both Brix/MES. Will have to check that one out... if our moms let us.
@@WeAreTheFallPod I didn't know it was her favourite film, thanks for that. Loving the podcast.

I hear it!
Back when Fall albums could and did do anything, you never knew which way they were going to go. The albums just became so predictable by the 2000's onwards, understandably but every album starts to do pretty much the same thing. Gimmie this mad, wayward weird shit.
They were called teddy boys due to their preference for the Edwardian style of their clothing
I'm really looking forward to the 90s, some true Fall-crap dwells there. Cannae wait!
Hahaha Let's get into it!
@@WeAreTheFallPod A bit harsh by me I must admit but you have to understand that getting into The Fall in the late 80's when I was around 14 and loving all that I heard, I didn't think it was possible for them to make something I didn't like - the 90s proved me wrong
@@branchleader73 Makes absolute sense. I think we have all experienced this with our favorite artist(s). It's so rare to find one that does not have that unfortunate 'down' period. Still, all the more fun to explore again.
@@WeAreTheFallPod Absolutely. Thanks for the pod guys, loving your work.
Smells like van exhaust and old dentures.
hahahaha ☠
Some fans believe the bottles contained not aftershave but prussic acid.
Explains why it was only sent to critics/writers and not fans... Can’t risk lowering the 50,000 Fall fan population, even by one.
@@WeAreTheFallPod 😆 (I always thought that 50k figure was a a bit optimistic tbh)
REM were massive, the Fall never quite made it that big. I think the American band you're looking for is probably the Replacements.
Yes, agreed with the Replacements. Someone also suggested Guided by Voices, which I like as an American comparison very much.
I’m thinkin from a similar area and not to pick nits with ya but Husker Du seems more The Fall-ish. Bob Mould and Mark E seem like kindred spirits to me. No regard for pop radio song structure/ length. True outsiders revered by those in the know. My 2 cents. Love the pod.
And GBV definitely agree w that. Alcohol and speed right?
@@jameswood608 Bob Mould, Bob Pollard, and MES walk into a pub... would love to see it.
45:10 😂
Guys - a quick question. Do you plan to discuss Von Südenfed? I love that LP and would be really into you two wittering on about it.
Yes for sure! We actually just found out about this album so we're really looking forward to checking it out.
22:25 - Not Karl, apparently. So not Karl.
Hahah not even close, unfortunately.
Hands in pockets? Check out live at Lowery Theatre sept '12 ..... I AM THE FALL. love yer podcast boys
Just heard Funky Si say (on his podcast) that MES was a great dancer too! Cheers Michael!
Let it Out and Trinity are good.
Yeah, Trinity is my favorite as well. Also, NDE is somewhat Fall-like in concept (lyrically) but definitely not in sound. When they go into that more 'Fates' sound, it really does it for me.
@@WeAreTheFallPod I almost wanna say Trinity is the most conventional arrangement and tune of the lot. Are we secret normies??
@@Unfunny_Username_389 Ha! It's no secret, if it comes down to female choir vocals over untuned guitar.
@@Unfunny_Username_389 Also, the 'less is more' approach to arrangement is definitely more fitting for this group, especially in relation to some of the tracks that have a lot more going on (see: Gaslighting).
The pop side gets so much worse in the 90's, in the 80's they might get poppy but it's still a weird twisted pop, especially lyrically. In the 90's there's just too much that's just dull, both musically and lyrically.
Agreed! It feels like even on Kurious Oranj, they attempted to get back to that weird/twisted pop sound (especially after Frenz) once more, before heading into the 90s...
56:53 yeah it kind of is "dooms" day; Domesday is the old English spelling for doomsday, meaning that the information in the Domesday Book of 1086AD was deemed so important that it would be valid until judgement day, i.e. doomsday i.e. the last day in history.
Someone on Patreon told us this as well, but not with this context (of the deemed significance/importance)-- Thanks! Who would have thought the text/information of a census could be so dramatic. Haha! But what do you make of the 'Payoff' then? I can perceive it as one of MES's favorite situations, where the government/government official is literally paid off, or even what nation is providing as a sacrifice to postpone the doomsday. Either way, very fun stuff.
50:06 - it's between this and Blindness, for my #1 Fall song. Oh and Behind the Counter is right up there.
Behind the Counter, great choice! I'm with you. Also, cannot wait to get to Fall Heads Roll.
@@WeAreTheFallPod I would get so much shit for this but most days it's may favourite album by the group. I know it should be Hex, or something. But fuck it. 😁
@@Unfunny_Username_389 Haha! I'm down with this.
Anyone else hear the likeness of the synth riff on Shoulder Pads to the theme tune of crap 70's BBC sitcom "Are You Being Served"? We know Smith was a bit of a magpie with sounds.
Not familiar with the show but can definitely hear a similarity in that ascending melodic line. Wouldn’t be surprised if Shoulder Pads 7 is unearthed with a cash register sound effect mixed in: th-cam.com/video/Mz6wvKUsP6M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=d4xuf0rIjPZrevca

Love how he leaned into the 'Funky Si' nickname (hard!). hahaha!
@@WeAreTheFallPod I love how we all lean into it. 😆
Karl burns solo drumming !!!
This one came after the Wonderful and Frightening World, not Perverted by Language. Also, in Barmy the line is 'friends disintegrate in circles of hash', not cash as you stated.
'Circles of hash' is much more visual and makes more sense (especially from a MES perspective). On The Annotated Fall they have 'cash' listed, but also, some even refer to that line being 'glass' (Re: Rough Mix version). Cheers!

This is the change needed after that early Fall sound had started to sound tired on PBL - just the weirdest POP ever, there's nothing like this.
Agreed!
Yeah, now we're getting down - let the 80's swang!
I am amazed anyone likes Hexen Definitive/Strife knot - slow lumbering, boring, lacking enough ideas, it just goes on forever in the worst way. I don't dig this album though.
Interesting, I can definitely see (hear) that perspective. I think there's something unique in the simplicity of this one, especially as they are about to transition into an era of 'over-polished' (more pop) riffs, which takes away from some of the band's edginess at times.
@@WeAreTheFallPod Sorry didn't mean to go in so hard on this one and I'm over stating my point. Yes they certainly get more polished here on in 80's wise but that somehow adds to the weirdness for me although Spectre vs Rector will always be a fave of mine too :D
