Aiston Tree Planting HD 1080p
We are so grateful to the 80 volunteers who came out on a gorgeous weekend in March to take on an incredible, inspirational challenge: to plant 800 trees in what had recently been a sterile mine floor.

the unkempt grasslands meeting low lying tree branches and brush that isnt passible by even deer of all LIHT land seems to pose a way greater threat of catastrophic fire than a few stands of scotch broom. on the westside broom seems to be the only thing keeping a lot of the bank from sluffing into the water. i understand not wanting broom inland in the fields but what native plants should i be using to keep the bank intact if not for broom? we have had several massive slides in the last couple years that now have nothing growing on them and continue to loose. in some cases on the south end houses are going to be falling off pretty soon. i often joke the inland side of south nugent is going to be waterfront property in the next 20 years. annual wildflowers and grass can only do so much and in the dormant season they arent holding anything. broom has wicked strong long lasting roots that keep a lot of our land ON land. i do hate seeing it taking over the fields as i graze upwards of 200 animals some years all over the island, i just think this "kill all scotch broom" narrative could be potentially dangerous to our already fragile banks if everyone is expected to go crazy and yank every last one out. sunnyhill and the likes where broom is several acres thick by all means torch it, but i think we should actually be planting it on the banks all the way around the island.

Thanks for your comments and questions, Dave! There are numerous native plants that provide effective erosion control. This is one list (soundnativeplants.com/wp-content/uploads/plants_for_erosion_control__steep_slopes.pdf) and there are many others. Establishing different kinds of vegetation -- ground cover, shrubs, and trees -- is often the most effective approach to countering erosion. Our Scotch broom eradication campaign included removing Scotch broom and replacing it with free, fire-resistant, pollinator friendly native plants in the fall. And you're right -- different kinds of plants do better in different locations. As someone who grazes animals, you probably also know that Scotch broom seeds can be toxic. Goats happily chow down on it--and blackberries, thistle, and bindweed--buts its alkaloids can cause muscle degeneration, birth defects, and even death among sheep, horses, and cattle. And as it spreads, it reduces grazing area. Which is unfortunate for us because it is a beautiful plant in its native environment. But it's so damaging to our ecosystems that the state of Washington has made it illegal to sell, buy, or plant it. Please stop by if you'd like to chat more! And thanks again, very much, for your comments.
