Catalina 22 Sailing from Redwing to Wabasha Minnesota on the Mississippi!
When your teenage son asks for a father son sailing trip you don't hesitate! We sailed around 60 miles in the 3 days down the Mississippi. Not everything went as planned and the bugs were a challenge at times but it was an adventure for sure.
While I would launch at a different ramp to start the trip and choose a different dock to avoid the bugs I would do it again. The sunsets, smiles, and memories made will last a life time. So I hope you enjoy this latest adventure of Lakeshark!

Apostle Islands 2021: A Father Son Adventure
มุมมอง 3553 ปีที่แล้ว
In August of 2021 my youngest son and I headed up to the Apostle Islands for 5 days and 4 nights of sailing, camping, and exploring. It was a fantastic time with the perfect weather. We swam, fished, hiked, and explored some of the towns around the Apostle Islands and Bayfield. In the end we sailed just over 60 miles on Lake Superior, hiked dozens of miles, visited 5 different Islands (Madeline...

Back on the water! April 3rd 2021 Lake Pepin
มุมมอง 213 ปีที่แล้ว
Lakeshark is officially back on the water! This was the earliest we have ever been on the lake. Ice out was only a week or so prior and the docks at the launch ramps have not even been installed yet. Everyone stayed safe, wearing proper PFD’s and moving with caution around the deck. The water is still cold but the air temps were in the 70s. Today’s goal was to tune the rigging on our 1987 Wing ...
It’s spring and The Lakeshark is Back! Catalina 22 Wing Keel

The winter cover is off, the rig is assembled, and the ice is off the lake! It’s time to get the boat ready to sail. The Catalina 22 nationals are only a few months away in Pensacola! Let’s do this.
Sailing on Lake Pepin 2021
มุมมอง 3363 ปีที่แล้ว
April 3rd sail. This was the earliest day we have ever been on he lake. Ice out was only a week or two prior and none of the docks were installed at the ramps yet. Everyone wore proper PFD’s at all times and stayed safe as we sailed out of Lake City to test various rig tunes. By adjusting the standing rigging we were able to significantly improve both our tacking angle and speed. Hopefully we w...

Intro, tension numbers. 31:47 mast, forestay, backstay. (My Note to self) Thanks for the video . I pleasure sail (single hand) a Catalina 22, have never raced, but a lot of this is in alignment with what I've picked up, plus intuition(flat boat!) I have a buddy, (6'8")single hands a precision 21 and he thinks sailing is his whole body wailing on that poor tiller and showing his keel. We each have fun, just different ways.

Doug is the current fastest most efficient Catalina 22 sailor in the fleet. He knows what works and what does not work. I am so glad that he allowed this dockside chat to be recorded. Once you have a basic understanding of rig tune this seminar helps fill in the rest of the information so that wether racing or cruising you can do so efficiently. Even when I am cruising it seems like I am always beating to weather for the next anchorage. Being able to get there fast with minimal heel means more time around the campfire on the beach and more comfort for the crew.

Good to hear from you. Off shore may be a bit hard with the river only being about 100 yards wide in redwing. I do miss the ocean sailing days though. Much less tacking and those sunsets are indescribable.

@@Lakeshark Stockton island nice as anything... nice walking rocks facing open lake , the hike is great , blueberries on the other side of the island from the popular dock / pier , lots of rafting off if your not on the hook , usuallya few people tho . South twin old owner in the 70s would let us anchor there and go ashore and putz around , nice island .he had an airstrip on it . Madeline where the state park is has got a nice trail , we snowshoed it with deer all around couple years ago along with the ice caves , raspberry has an little safe beach anchorage , dont know about trails on it ..now probably tho Hermit had that guy living there eons ago . Oak island was a trip . Long island was cool , we went there once. Bit shallow , good call , cool hang. .we had a contest 29 '11 " sloop and charged around like you did , really enjoyed that .we had an irwin 23 on lake peppin and graduated up to the marina slip with the contest , saw you were wing and wing there , and 7 knots was flyin , your a good sailer . Some of islands i haven't been on but devils is nice to do the caves in a dink, was that back of devils with the steps ? I know we tied off at the c.g.station , rock island used to have a restaurant and a junkyard with a few 40s and 50s looking cars and decent dock back then .awsome !! definitely do it again.

LOL. It was one of my first attempt at using the GoPro software. Most of the video was auto made with the app. Not the best but hey it sure was fun and did not take long to edit. Perhaps some day I’ll actually make a longer video of the rest of the event with more pictures 😎. Thanks for watching though.

What a lucky man you are! If I could have such an adventure with any one of my four children, I could die today and life would have been complete. Alas, I sail my Cat 22 alone on a very small lake. I was born and raised on Lake Erie, living now in Idaho. Maybe it's time I trailer the C22 back to my home.

    • @Lakeshark
      @Lakeshark 3 ปีที่แล้ว

One of the many advantages to the Catalina 22 is its ability to be trailered to various bodies of water. Our little boat has been such a blessing for our family and an affordable getaway. This year alone we have trailered more than 4,000 miles and explored many lakes and bays.
