Makray Memorial Golf Club | My WORST Round of Golf in Years
18 Holes at Makray Memorial Golf Club in Barrington, IL.
This was a very difficult round with extremely firm and fast greens, and a lot of wind on a course with a difficult layout. We collapsed a little bit mentally, but grinded it out until the end. Enjoy!

      @thunderbolt4795 I am still deciding, I was leaning more towards the steel shaft as well, but this visit to the pga superstore was my first time doing some extensive testing. They are a little pricy (worth the price of course based on my testing) so I wanted to make sure I got the right one the first time. Did you order it direct from their website? @dan.promedio Yes, it's definitely one of my favorites, I have played Blackstone in morengo which was really nice and Makray memorial (challenging layout and very difficult greens). I played Makray last week (I played very poorly on the greens and in the wind) but I did film that one so I will probably post that video in a few weeks after I editing it. Otherwise I've played a few smaller courses here and there, but those are the main 2 I remember.

    In your opinion what's more important for these LIV guys today off the tee: Distance or accuracy?

    • @_odisi
      @_odisi หลายเดือนก่อน

      @PocketGoats I remember there being a solid 4-5 holes where carry distance was very important (2 par 3s and 1 par 5 for sure), but I would say accuracy is more important. There are a lot of par 4s with tight fairways and hazards on both sides and some tricky greens to land into.

    How would I be able to make sure the screen is nice and flat or tight?

    • @_odisi
      @_odisi หลายเดือนก่อน

      @brandonnelson5653 The way I mounted the screen on top with the cable and clips makes the weight evenly distributed along the top, then to have some slight tension at the bottom I used rock climbing carabiners connected to some I bolts I screwed into the base board trim along the edge of the floor. Something as strong as rock climbing carabiners is necessary because the driver hits will snap weaker things like zip ties or wire.

      The ball to the impact screen distance is 7ft, and the impact screen is 1ft away from the wall. The netting cage is 3 in behind the impact screen and 9 in from the wall. My space is a little constrained, so more distance is better, but these distances work fine for me. I also put the foam gym tiles against the wall just to be extra safe.

I would definitely be open to playing in the future (and filming it if you don't mind), you are actually the second person to ask me about this recently so I will start keeping a tracking sheet of usernames who would like to play, and when I have some more time in the future to start a new series of playing with viewers, I can reach out.

    Well done with this build. Great inclusion of all the steps and pricing on all the bits. I was trying to choose between the standard and premium on Carls screens. How has yours held up? Picture quality is not that big of an issue to me and I can always upgrade screens on 2nd. Have you look at GSPro software? It has a subscription cost, but from reviews I have seen, the imagery is better and the physics are better than E6. Also it has just about every real course you would want to play created by users to exacting detail. They are not named correctly due to licensing, but Agusta is Agusta, just called Georgia Golf Club 🤣 Then there are the user fantasy courses. Does require a bit of a computer to play, but being at 1080p that should make it a bit lighter on the system.

    • @_odisi
      @_odisi 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Power5 Thank you! The standard screen has held up well for me so far, I would say. For reference, I have used it for 8 months currently, I practice on average 4 days a week on it, and have played around 15 rounds of golf on it so far. So far there is just a little wear in 2 spots (white fluff coming off the screen) , but the images still looks pretty good in those patches. With the cable and carabiner setup I can rotate the screen if I need to, but haven't had the need yet. If you go with the premium the image will probably look a little sharper. I've looked at it briefly, and seen a few videos online. It does look very nice, but I already bought tgc2019 and that's worked pretty well for me so far. If I ever move and need to build a new one, I will probably re-evaluate software then, thanks.

      @yooper9062 I did it retroactively in a shorts video later, I believe. I screwed I-bolts to the base boards of the wall, and used some more rock climbing carabiners to attach the screen. I tried other wire or rope solutions, but the driver hits kept snapping them. Rock climbing equipment is rated for extreme pressure so it doesn't break.

      I was wondering the same thing. I would say if you value your wrists, do not cheap out on the hitting mat. Though if your astroturf and 1" foam tile is under it, you are probably ok. People who put those cheap mats direct on concrete are in for a painful future. Had a few fat swings yesterday at a driving range and had a slight pain in my wrist.

    • @_odisi
      @_odisi 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Power5 Yes, that is a very good point, a high quality hitting mat is a must! I have a pretty decent one, but like you mentioned, I also put foam tiles and astroturf underneath to further cushion the blows. I can definitely feel it at the dring range sometimes when they have the mats straight on concrete and I have a mis-hit.

    Thanks for sharing your experience. Great video. I have been planning a simulator to go in my garage 'cause it has a 10' ceiling. Your space, with the 9' ceiling, is similar to my upstairs game / exercise room. I am now measuring it to see if a similar plan would work. This would provide the great benefit of being heated / cooled. I appreciate your custom design approach and may adapt it to my build. Do you find any tendency for balls to ricochet off your ceiling?

    • @_odisi
      @_odisi 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, and I hope it works out well for you. As for the balls ricocheting, I have not had too much of a problem with that. The most important thing to consider is the tension of the impact screen. If you don't connect the bottom corners to anything, you will be safe, but then you may have to move the bottom of the screen after every other shot, which is a little annoying. If you have too much tension, a lot of shots will ricochet. If you have small to medium tension, the balls will just drop to the floor after being hit, but you need a super sturdy connector otherwise they may snap when you hit your driver (example, zip ties broke, so I used rock climbing carabiners [rated for extreme strength]). I am also slightly closer to the impact screen (6-7 ft), 10 ft is recommended, but I have limited space. But because I am closer to the screen, my balls hit lower down on the screen and don't really get close to the ceiling (so I didn't feel the need to put a net up there). I don't typically practice the 60 degree wedge flop shot in the house though, just to be safe haha.

  • @eliot1c

    Great setup. How do you keep wedge shot golf balls from getting through the top of the screen?

    • @_odisi
      @_odisi 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am slightly closer to the screen than what is recommended ( because of my limited space, only 6ft-7ft in front of me) so all my balls hit a little lower on the impact screen. I've never had a problem with balls flying up, but just to be safe I typically don't practice a flop shot with the 60 degree in the house haha

    • @_odisi

      @darrensunahara3840 There is no effect on the readings since the Skytrak is a style of simulator that you put right in front of you. If I had the mevo+ instead it would be less accurate, because it wouldn't have enough space to calculate properly. (Since it is placed behind you)

    Damn this was super informative. As an ex-gymnast myself I feel like I take for granted how stretching often did me good. Lately I've been feeling super constricted in my mobility and feel a lot of the neck pain you talked about. I'm gonna try this out, I feel like even doing this a couple days a week would help immensely

    Well done. Thanks for some great tips. 2 questions - First, how far away from the wall is your impact screen? Second, does the netting go all the way around behind the net also? Appreciate your help.

      Thank you! 1. Impact screen is about 1ft from the wall.(I also put spare foam gym tile on the wall as extra protection) 2. Yes, it is 3 pieces of netting sewn together in a U shape.

      Awesome man! Thanks for the reply. I look forward to getting something similar up in the next couple months once we move in March. Hit em straight! 🤙🏾

    Great idea! I already have a somewhat similar netting setup that I was using without an impact screen. About to add the projector and impact screen with the same process you used here. Couple questions, 1. When you ran the steel cable, were you crimping it at the end to try and create max tension to hold up the screen? And 2. As far as I can tell, you don't have anything holding the bottom of the screen in place. Are you finding it has much give when you swing into it? Going to hang the screen in front of my net and won't really have anything to permanently hold it in place at the bottom so seeing if I will need to fashion something. Thanks for the idea!

      Thank you! to answer your questions, 1. I tried to get as much tension as possible that I could reasonably do by myself. The less tension you have, the screen might sag a little and have a tiny gap between the ceiling and the screen. 2. Originally I didn't have anything holding the bottom down, but sometimes it would move around, so one upgrade I made later was to put some of the I bolts along the bottom trim of the wall, and use some rock climbing carabiners to attach the bottom corners to the I bolts. I tried using regular carabiners like the tiny ones in the video, but those would get bent after about 100 balls, rock climbing carabiners are rated to hold extreme weight so they don't break.

    Great build! How far away from your impact screen is your hitting area?

      Thank you, and a little over 6ft. A little close, but the amount of tension I have on the screen prevents balls from bouncing back.
