Clock And Barometer Combination By Charles Maspero, Manchester, UK, Circa 1860
This rare clock and barometer combination, signed by "C. MASPERO / Manchester," is a rare and impressive piece of 19th-century craftsmanship, likely dating from 1850 to 1870. Known for producing elegant barometers often housed in inlaid cases, Charles Maspero's creations were finely detailed; this example is no exception. The case, veneered in rich-figured mahogany, is approximately 55 inches long, with a striking figure-eight shape, cross-banding details, and a beautifully aged finish. Clocks of this scale are impressive and may have been specifically ordered for a public place.
At the top of the piece, a 16-inch clock dial is housed behind convex glass. It has large Roman numerals and steel spade hands. This clock is powered by a quality spring-driven fusee movement, designed to run for eight days on a full wind.
In the center of the case, two thermometers, one mercury and one alcohol-based, are encased in glass. Offering old and new technology. The alcohol thermometer is most likely a replacement. They are accompanied by engraved brass faceplates with silver wash, marked with key temperature indicators such as "Fever-Heat" and "Freezing." These two thermometers balance a central door featuring a beautifully reverse-painted scene of Napoleon, likely depicting him in exile on St. Helena, with a ship sailing away-perhaps the HMS Northumberland.
The lower section houses a 14-inch brass barometer dial, also treated with a silver wash to indicate atmospheric pressure. The dial includes a decorative compass star and is operated by a mercury-filled J-tube inside the case. The barometer’s hands-one black to record the mercury level and one brass for manual adjustments-allow for weather tracking over time.
The pairing of this clock and barometer combination, crafted for a public space or prestigious setting, is one of the few surviving examples known today. In only 50 years, we encountered less than five.
Height 55", Width 19 3/4", Depth 4 1/4"
Inventory number 223313.
