How ADHD effects me
I was diagnosed with ADD (Attention deficit disorder without the hyperactivity) when I was 8 or 9 with Asperges. Now at 30 Asperges has fallen out of diagnostic lingo and so too is my ADD currently being referred to as ADHD. I'm hopeful this will move me in a positive direction.

    It seems like you are reflecting on a lot of stuff, which is always great for growth. it is a reoccurring challenge to live in the moment and personally one of the harder challenges i'm faced with myself. What helps me is to take a deep breath. Feel the ground beneat my feet and practice mindfulness. it could be as simple as smelling a flower or really enjoying an orange. As we grow older everything because a bit more satured since we've seen it all before alot more, so exploring new avenues and getting out of your comfort zone (or appreciating things that go overlooked) have been very beneficial for me and I think it could be for you as well. I've always admired how you were so consistent when it comes to your uploading schedule on Bird Keeper Toby so you can imagine my surprise to see we have the same diagnosis. I could never focus or get stuff done as child, now it is like you said, I'm constantly in my head thinking of the next thing and I have this big responsibility towards myself to be proactive and productive 24/7. I think its important to be able to sit down and be grateful for what you've done instead of sitting on this endless rollercoaster of tasks. so its really nice to be able to relate with this video. Rilatine for me was helpful as child, but it was still a drug and I felt the effects it had on my body. The best way in my opinion is to create dopamine through natural sources like sport, get enough sleep, and to just overhydrate my brain, that has helped me the most with the least amount of drawbacks. a crucial step in being productive is to be able to take care of yourself and like you said, live in the moment. so you can hack your brain into being productive by taking self care moments and reflecting on moments of gratitude. Thank you for making this video, its authentic video's like this that have a lot of worth in them.

    Idk where I am on the neurodivergent spectrum myself. I tried to get an autism diagnosis back in college about a decade ago, but was told I couldn’t possibly be bc I don’t speak monotone. Only thing that psych evaluation got me was confirmation of the depression (that I already knew since middle school). Would love to try again with more knowledgeable doctors to see if I’m autistic, ADD, both, or something else altogether. But also money. 😩 (Would also like to get back on an antidepressant but probably not back to Zoloft like I had been for ages about 13-18. Was a touch too numb I think on that, but could’ve also been a “should not have been on that during goddamn adolescence” thing, so. :V)

    Hi Toby, thanks for sharing! One of my clients recommended a really great book called The Drummer and the Great Mountain. Its a book that actually did change my life by telling me how to nourish and care for my ADD brain through dietary changes and habits. Its got larger text (i think so you feel like you accomplish more as you turn pages more often) and is easy to pick up and put down. I highly recommend this book for anyone with ADHD or anyone looking to understand someone with it better. Take care!

    So sorry you have a cold hon. My ADHD, OCD and MILD Tourette’s has always given me similar issues. I am always thinking of what I should be doing with an inability to relax and enjoy the now. Ritalin was a help for me in remembering things on the shopping list, however I stopped after trying it for six months as I just felt that something of me was missing and my creativity dampened a little. Everyone is different and they have tried me on many drugs to help and I end up wondering if it’s worth taking them. Love and huggles xxxxxxxxx

    I am a late diagnosis ADHDer, and actually it felt like all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place once I was diagnosed. Everything suddenly made sense. There are several different drugs available in the UK for ADHD, I'm on lisdexamphetamine (Elvanse), which definitely helps. I definitely get the struggle of being present in the moment. I also am always busy, but the problem I do have is I spend too much time on 'side quests' and not doing the thing I actually need to do at that time. Meaning that I make myself busy which limits the time I have to do the things I want to do. Even when I do those things it's hard to be in the moment with them because I'm thinking about all the things I still need to do. Music for me is a big help, even just in the background. It's all about finding what works best for you.

    One of the worst things about mental health is the knee-jerk reaction people have to it out of lack of information. Having diagnoses can be a challenge, and suck for the people dealing with it, but it shouldn't automatically be a stigma that someone has ADHD or autism. As more people are exposed to health services and the knowledge base gets wider, more people are being diagnosed. It's not because it's getting more common, it's because it's been historically underreported. A far higher number of people have at least one possible diagnosis than we knew 20 years ago. "Neurotypical" is slowly referring to fewer and fewer people, and there's nothing wrong with that. People shouldn't be labelled and separated unless they want to wear the label themselves; everyone is different.

    Honestly only way i can truly focus with my ADHD is by never truly focusing (kinda ironic, I know, focusing by not focusing) but by letting my mind wander to whatever it wants to wander to, im able to think about 2 things at once For example, i could be at work at also thinking about Pokemon or making homemade wine or even thinking about honeybees (i want to become a beekeeper/wine maker), and as long as nobody is bothering me about something being wrong or needing to hurry up, im able to have a steady work flow going

    I have ADHD and once I start things it's hard for me to stop... but once I am doing things it kinda relaxes me.. at the time but once I force stop myself I keep having the itch to keep doing. I did the medication for years but I found myself misuing the meds. Be careful because it is real easy to misuse, after it was pointed out to me for the 5th or 6th time that I was misuing I stopped using so be careful. I also think it also has to do with the medicine that you're on. I was on concerta.

    I'm a now adult woman who was fortunate enough to get her ADHD diagnosis as a child. I vaguely remember testing out different meds like Ritalin and Vyvanse. Adderall is what worked best for me, personally. Toby, I'm sure your questionnaire kind of indicated this, ADD or ADHD isn't a LACK of focus, it's the inability to regulate your focus. So yeah, you hyper fixate on certain things, but you can't focus on others even if you want to. Meds really helped me with that. I feel more in control of my own body and mind when my meds are in my system

    • @erik31416
      @erik31416 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'll second the point of making sure to go over options with your doctor - I end up panicky and depressive with Ritalin, and it's actually what caused me to *refuse* to be medicated in high school, when Ritalin was the only option I was offered. When I went from a manual labor job to a desk job in my late 20's I talked to the doc again and found Adderall was much more effective. I'm not sure what the government approved options are like compared to the US, but if you do want to consider medication remember there are multiple options to try.

    Thanks for sharing your experiences Toby. I was diagnosed autistic earlier this year, and have my ADHD assessment in November. I found coaching really useful to help me understand my brain. I also find journalling a great way to get all the busy thoughts out of my head and quieten the chatter. But yes, I still feel that not 100% present feeling. Even when I’m trying to give someone or something my attention my mind wanders. I often have to be doing multiple things at once. I hope you get some answers and find ways to be more present.

    I haven't been diagnosed with ADHD, and the reason I've worded it like that is because I'm like 65% sure I have it. I'm already neurodivergent, and there are a lot of non-neurotypical things that I do that can't be explained with JUST dyslexia. I just simply don't have the money to get a formal diagnosis.

    Holy crap! You were diagnosed with ADD and Aspergers? Also, I'm intrigued that it's called Asperges over there across the pond (if I got that phrase correctly). I was diagnosed with Aspergers and ADD as a kid, rediagnosed with ADHD and Autism as an adult since old records were lost. It's kinda wild when you go through all the questions and realize "these are all me" and the wild of ride of discovering more of yourself and understanding more of how you function.

      As Toby alluded to in the video description, Asperger's Syndrome and ADD as diagnoses no longer exist in the latest version of the DSM, they're now ASD Level 1 and Inattentive Type ADHD, but some people who were diagnosed while they were considered separate diagnoses still prefer to use the term they grew up with as that's what's on the piece of paper they got from the psychiatrist.

    Tbh the restrictions in relation to brand image (mature subjects talked about, swearing, etc) are probably why even if I did make Pokémon content, I could never see myself formally invited to anything lol. Even though Pokemon is largely aimed at kids still and I do love it, I’m still an adult, and I find it hard to restrict myself like that when not in a professional setting. Not to mention any content I would be considering my art and I don’t believe in limits in art (it’s why I like it so much tbh). I’m sure it’s a great feeling to be noticed by senpai as it were, but yeah lol.

    one reason why I love the Sonic franchise is that they support fan games and other fan projects like animations, mods, etc. They also seem to not be too strict on who they collaborate with from the Sonic community, say they’ll work with people even if they swear and are 100% honest with products the franchise releases and not forcing positivity to make the brand look good regardless if the product is good or not.
