ITA - “ONDE” è un racconto sul continuo mutamento, in cui il mare risuona ovunque, dolce movimento che può cullare prima di trasformarsi in onda anomala e distruggere, facendo tabula rasa. Custodisce al proprio interno numerose metafore e molteplici stati d’animo che come le onde marine possono assumere mille forme. Mentre tutta l’acqua si muove cambiando forma e potenza, ogni canto si lascia attraversare dai suoni dentro un mare di frequenze. La voce di Maria Mazzotta prende il largo, si lascia scagliare lontano e poi affondare, prima di tornare in superficie e, finalmente, riposare. Questo disco racconta il movimento del mare, dal tormento che comporta navigarlo al sollievo che regala, alla fine, ogni approdo.
“SULA NU PUEI STARE” nasce dalla volontà di omaggiare la buleria, tipico ritmo del flamenco gitano andaluso che la Mazzotta ha potuto scoprire ed apprezzare grazie alla lunga collaborazione con il danzatore Miguel Angel Berna e i suoi musicisti.
Tracciando una rotta tra il Salento, con l’espressione tipica del canto e del dialetto, e l’Andalusia, con la ritmica fortemente ispirata alla buleria, il trio approda nel Nord Africa dove il terzinato tipico resta al contempo così vicino alla pizzica pizzica salentina.
La naturale evoluzione del brano ha portato il trio ad invitare Bombino, eccezionale chitarrista e cantautore del Niger, tra i maggiori fautori del successo globale del “desert blues”. Con Bombino il risultato è un rito propiziatorio fatto di corde di chitarre che si intrecciano, un groove di tapan e percussioni che esorta alla danza e al dialogo senza pregiudizi, l’invito alla solidarietà verso il prossimo a discapito dell’individualità.
ENG - “ONDE” is a story about continuous change, in which the sea resonates everywhere, the gentle movement that can lull before it transforms into a tidal wave that destroys, making a clean sweep. It holds within itself numerous metaphors and multiple states of mind that, like sea waves, can take on thousands of forms.
While all water moves, changing shape and force, each song lets sounds pass through it within a sea of frequencies in which Cristiano della Monica's percussion and Ernesto Nobili's guitars guarantee Maria Mazzotta's song the possibility to navigate onward. The voice shoves off and sets sail, allowing itself to be hurled far away, sinking before returning to the surface and, finally, finding rest. For the three musicians who, from Lecce and Naples, have always had the sea in their minds and eyes, this album tells the story of the movement of the sea, from the torment that navigating it entails to the relief that, in the end, each landing offers.
“SULA NU PUEI STARE” came about from the desire to pay homage to the Bulería style and its classic Andalusian Gitano Flamenco rhythm, which Maria was able to discover thanks to her longstanding collaboration with dancer Miguel Angel Berna and his musicians.
Tracing a route from the Salento area, with the classic expression of song and dialect, to Andalusia, with the rhythm strongly inspired by the Bulería style, the trio arrives in North Africa where the rhythm remains as always in triplets which is at the same time quite close to how Salento pizzica pizzica is.
The way in which the song evolved naturally is what brought the trio to invite Bombino, an exceptional guitarist and singer-songwriter from Niger and one of the major exponents of the global success of “Desert Blues”. With Bombino the result is a propitiatory ‘good luck’ rite made of intertwining guitar strings, a Macedonian tapan drum groove, and
percussion that encourages dance and dialogue without prejudice; an invitation to show solidarity towards others by putting aside individuality.
