I also like the narrator is in english as if it should be like that somehow i imagined all games in english because of rareware xp
Glad you're liking it :)
That detailed map is very nice!! The colors look so nice. I always dreamed that this could be in color. The super gameboy for snes didn’t do it, it just used monocolor pallette
Yeah, whomever did this, did a great job
Thanks so much for the retrospective! This was the first gameboy game i played. It was called Mystic Quest. My parents got it for free with the gameboys but nobody had a clue what it was. I was between 5 or 7 years old when i played this. I could read my native language well (dutch), but i never read english in my life. I could recognize the letters. This game was my first tutor or encounter with english! I remember mystic quest felt local to me, but the idea that the water itself is influenced by the people itself and is fed back into the system (the mana tree), it quaked my worldview. In hindsight, the reversal of the waterflow is the same process as getting to be universal and kind. Bob Saget with funniest homevideos was still on tv as well as bob ross. After this UK kept influencing my childhood, with dkc 1/2/3. And david wise music. I felt I already lost all my teeth early on. I was stuck on palmtrees and eight for many years. There was no internet and when we got very early access and played doom2 deathmatches through printercables, we couldnt find information. Somehow in my head i spotted the paper map included with the game and saw that before Jadd is the palmtrees in a giant 8. I thought the secret had to be here. I hit every tree at every oasis 8 times. It wasn’t until donkey kong country 3 that i figured the secret. In dkc3 you had to drive a boat in a figure 8 to reveal the hidden world. Then i knew and went back to mystic quest. It was surreal to continue after all these years. It was in the summer i did that and it was in a summer garden still in the 90s. When i reached mana temple the music was heavily and haunting at the same time. The Crystal desert music also made me feel ‘high level new area’ music for the first time. The music of this game still unlocks weird memories/feelings from then i thought i was forgotten
I'm glad you're enjoying it. This was one of my first experiences of an RPG, and I too first played it as Mystic Quest way back when I was young. And thoughts of that palm tree puzzle still annoy me to this day... But yeah, the music in this game is amazing. The composer did such a great job squeezing as much as possible out of the little Gameboy speakers, whilst the programmers did such a great job squeezing as much as possible in... Keep with it though, I will be finishing this one, and doing a few more GB classics down the line too :)
@@retrobutionSHG funny more players have this experience! sometimes i think we are all mr bean beamed down by an ufo. its amazing how limitations can still bring out lightening in a bottle. in graphics, music. im still either awed by MQ or dkc series. for example how david wise could do the synthesizer low pass filter shift sound in forest interlude by painstakingly using samples of every shift, then putting it into a snes.. fun to watch more gameboy playthroughs!
Well, I do plan on doing another GB classic after this one, but will definitely be doing more in the future! 👍
I thought we used the moonstone to get nidoking.
Nope, in Silent Hill you get a massive slug instead... But of a let down 🤣
Thank god it's not the Director's Cut.
I went out of my way to MAKE SURE it wasn't the Director's Cut... 👍
@@retrobutionSHG Atta boy!
This game does not want to be played. 😂
I think you might be right
I remember playing the original of this game, it came on one of those 100 in 1 knock off carts. Looks great for the GBC.
I was introduced to this first as a kid by my cousin, who had the original cart, and not long afterwards I got it for myself... Great game... And yeah I agree, this GBC version looks fantastic
Is that the theme from Golden Axe in the background? Or are my ears deceiving me?
Over the intro? Yeah, you are completely correct 👍
Congrats on wrapping up another LP. Looking forward to SH3. Completely agree that this is one of the best games ever made. If they’re going to remake another one. It should maybe be a redo of SH4 or origins, imo.
I reckon, if they're going to, start from the start of the core story. Origins, then SH1, then SH3...
I appreciate showing the fridge monster 😂
I felt it had to be done 🤣
Cool game , well done to the French Rayon Studio in Basic Locomotive category.
Yeah, I thought this was pretty cool actually. Unique, fun... Great job 👍
Sounded like you had a lot of fun with this one! Great to see. 😊
Yep, this one was great fun too ❤️
Looks like a good one.
Yeah, it's got me intrigued for sure...
Remember playing this a lot of times in the arcades (and pubs) growing up. Total nostalgia for it and really should get myself a copy.
It truly is a great game 👍
I'd just like to point out that there are two things about this video: 1/ I managed to overcome my technical issues whilst playing a second playthrough, so I've spliced some footage together, resulting in different gameplay times on the save screen. 2/ I had a cold when I recorded this, so my attention span isn't what it should have been. I hope this doesn't detract from your enjoyment of the video.
Hope to see more point and clicks on the Amstrad after this great start
I will be continuing with this one, and apparently there are a couple more on the Amstrad, so I'll look into those in the future :)
Another great vid. Glad you’ve reminded me about the teleportaloo. 😂
Thanks. Yeah, that Portal Potty must cause havoc during normal school hours...
i love this game. brings back loads of memories
Me too... I loved playing this again... Might have to look into Two Point Hospital at some point...
Never played quake 1, only quake 2. Might get it though as it’s cheap on the switch.
IMHO, Quake is far better than Quake 2, but I only played Quake 2 once. The original, I keep coming back to time and again... Classic 👍
Firstly: hello! Secondly: running away from the bad guys is probably the best strategy, and fitting for harry’s character, and basically what Cybil said, too.
👋 Yeah, Harry's a writer, not a fighter...
Yeah I realise today is Monday - I recorded this, but for some reason didn't upload it!
You’re an ecological hazard with that axe. 😂
It won't be the last time 🤣
Congrats on finishing another series! One of the best games ever made.
Thanks dude. Couldn't agree more 👍
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Loved this version. A new and improved homebrew is on its way courtesy of New Zealand
Oh really? I'll keep an eye out... am going to do some unofficial ports in the future...
Definitely ambitious. Big sprites, good presentation and all the characters are playable ( take that SNES 😅 )
I guess the humble CPC could do what the mighty SNES couldn't lol
@@retrobutionSHG If you get the chance then check out Star Driver on the Amstrad. It attempts a Mode 7 effect. There is also an F1 game in development trying something similar
Another conversion to the Amstrad that went down well at the time. Probe did some good ports
I mean, this was better than the MASTER SYSTEM version...
This was well received on the Amstrad at the time. A good effort
I think out of all of them, I definitely prefer the gameboy version. It has tighter controls, and is more aesthetically Addams Family...
I was a huge He-Man fan in the early 80s, so when I watched this I was extremely let down. It's clear they had the license to the franchise, but no idea what it was about, other than the names and likenesses of some of the characters. The new characters they introduced were awful, and the fact they brought them to Earth was a major cop-out. They would have been better off making an animated movie, like Transformers The Movie, which was (and still is) and absolute rocking classic!
Congrats for this series, dude. 🎉🎉🎉 It’s been very enjoyable indeed. Also, the music for the top 3 (or 7) was awesome.
thanks. and yeah, that music was from the CPC version of Golden Axe. When I heard it, I thought "yep, I want that one" lol :)
The universe is music. Opening a dimensional door is relatively easy, but the tones stored in the Cosmic Key were wiped out. Thats why you need to collect those notes - so Kevin can play them on his Keyboard from Charlie's music store - to get everyone home and save Eternia.
Aaah. Thanks for the explanation :)
The film was a mess, and who came up with that music concept? Clearly someone who never watched the cartoons. 😄
@@mrpositronia Skeletor, you should have stayed in the pit!
I've always loved this film
This game used to shred me
nice colours
Ohhh I remember this game. The controllers were cool! You drove it like a tank, and had buttons to turn the turret on the top. I remember it in the arcade, but I'm pretty sure I rented the NES version at some point.
The arcade version had two joysticks... How did the NES version play? Might have to take a look...
I had this for my Speccy. Wish I’d kept it as I really enjoyed it at the time.. and it goes for crazy money now because it was a late Spectrum release and I believe one of the few 128k only games.
Well, it does have 240 'rooms'... So yeah it would have to be a big 'un... Still amazes me how they squeezed 240 different locations into 128k, along with the character, enemy and hazard sprites... Coding was summat else back then...
@@retrobutionSHGit really was incredible what they could do. I’m a software dev and no one cares about memory now for the most part. And there is no need to come up with any clever solutions because to many components are prebuilt and stuck together - unfortunately none of the 8-bit or 16-bit systems survived til this day in the mainstream to cause people to have to fit things in to such small spaces as 128K and 1MHz procs #nostalgia 😂
I know, right? All I can say is speccy (and by extension, Gameboy) R-Type...
@@retrobutionSHGvery good point indeed. And I suspect we’d struggle to see that level of skill and knowledge from modern devs - myself included. My BASIC knowledge is decent enough because of the era I was brought up in but I’ve tried and failed with machine code and that’s where all this incredible stuff can come together.
Same. I'm in the early stages of making a demake for the Gameboy... I really have no idea how I'm gonna fit it all in lol
That was extremely trippy. Programmed by a raver, probably.
That's the way it was in the 80s tho...
Had this on VHS growing up.. I think my parents got it thinking the Wizard of Oz was great and not expecting this weird creepy 80’s interpretation of another Oz book. It was not watched much.
Yeah I think that was the case for a lot of people. I'm in the minority where I think Wizard is mediocre at best, but Return was actually good. Underrated, as people hated on it as it wasn't as bright and colourful and happy as Wizard... shame
@@retrobutionSHG I should go back and rewatch it as I’ve not seen it in about 30 years. I have a feeling I’ll come away enjoying it due to its dark aesthetic and tone.
Not a bad idea... Will definitely enjoy it more than the game, that's for sure...
Great stuff. I wonder if doing a ground pound would uproot those spooky sprites from the sand in that secret level at the end.
Just tried it and... You're not wrong! They're crabs, carrying 10 coins each! 💰💰
I thought those were the graphics at first.
No, just a slightly edited title screen lol
That boss fight music is damn good!
It really is. Gives me kinda Streets of Rage vibes, in a way...
I bought this off eBay a few months ago. I think I had two or three goes before I got frustrated, switched it off, and the box went back on the shelf. I've never seen the second level - maybe it's completely different like other movie licences which have a mini game for each level (a la Batman - The Movie). To be honest with you, I found the game too bad to even bother googling the answer to this, but was kind of hoping maybe you would have cheated your way past the first level to show us. Very bad show from the Oliver Twins and, yeah, AA rating it that highly makes no sense. As you've found out through your Amstrad Anniversary vids, very few AA ratings do make sense. "Inconsistent" is far too much of an overstatement.
Yeah, and as much of a fan of AA as I am, it is only really now I'm seeing this inconsistency... But no, no matter how much frustration, no cheating here...
great game was one of the best
I guess I'll have to play more of it then :)
Like the introductions to your videos .. give some great background to the brand/game/etc. Also wasn’t aware of GBII being seen as a critical failure though I’m not surprised by this as I suspect Columbia expected it to come with all of the accolade (and cash) of the original even though 5 years had passed. Too quick to judge I’m sure over the years the movie has made whoever owns the rights now a hell of a lot of money. It was also the first movie I remember seen at the cinema as a child. Keep up the videos.. good narration and game play 👍
Thanks for the kind words! I was surprised to find that out about GBII as well, but yeah I guess tastes had changed in those intervening 5 years... I for one don't think it THAT bad, but what do I know... Thanks for watching, glad you're enjoying the videos 👍
This was the first game I got (not including the bundled software). I spent hours upon hours playing this as a kid. Very addictive!
Same. This and Oh Mummy...
Wow this looks really good!
I enjoyed it, if it was a little bit frustrating... but I think with time and patience you could get a lot out of this game
Such a bizarre concept: people like computer games, people like Rocky Horror .... uuuuuh pineapple pen!
That sounds like something I probably don't wanna Google...
@@retrobutionSHG you don't remember the PPAP guy? I will give this a go to see what I think, but I'll admit that the bright colours in some rooms made be feel nauseous, and I had to skip past them. Quick question (and not a slight, I promise) - why did you decide to use graphics smoothing? I know some people prefer it, and some don't, but I was just wondering the reasons.
@whetphish yeah, I was the same, and being epileptic too the flashing colours didn't help much either... But I ploughed on through for the sake of the review... As for graphics smoothing, I don't know what you mean. I did run this on an emulator, so maybe it was just a default setting?
@@retrobutionSHG ah okay, I guess the smoothing is on by default. I prefer it in its blocky originality, even if it does look different to how it would on a CRT. I know some people have smoothing and even emulated CRT lines. I will ask the question on the FB group and see what people's preferences are.
This would have been in my top 10, back in the day.
As you can tell, still is for me :)
My Mum bought this for me!!! Thank you for uploading this!!!!⭐️
