Lionel train Christmas 2022 large carpet layout 18220 746 2343 2344 2383 2242
Commemorative Lionel train layout based on my best childhood train layout ever. This layout design has an extremely long main line with functioning freight yard. You are able to pull a very long train however because of the crossovers, you are stuck to single train operation on the main line. O27 profile K Line and Lionel track, curves are 42", 54", and 72" diameter, K line Super K track is found on the first few sidings which also match the K Line 42" path switches. Instead of wiring the track switches off of constant power as usual, for testing, all remote track switches are using track power on this layout and they worked well. Layout size is 11' x 16'.
Elevate the outer back loop around the tv up above the layout for 2-3 train operation as seen in the old layout pictures at the end of the video. I had the long main line wired in 12 blocks for the two transformer operation. I cut the old manual switch track's curved turn outs into half tracks to build the original tight track frieght yard. Curves are o27", Marx 34", and I bent o27" track wider to custom make my own wide diameter turns. This was only possible after buying up all the train sets in my neighborhood that the kids weren't using:) Layout size was 5' x 16' and what a lucky kid I was.

Lionel magnetraction snow trains highlights compilation of 3 seasons
มุมมอง 4292 ปีที่แล้ว
Highlights reel with 3 seasons of Lionel dual motor 12 wheel drive diesel magnetraction action in the snow. We had to find out exactly what magnetraction really is capable of in these conditions. Different track temperatures and snow types resulted in drastically different outcomes. The trains sustained no damage and since it's low voltage it is safe fun too.

Clean the AXLES on your Lionel center pick up contact rollers
มุมมอง 3.3K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Keeping the axles on center contact pick up rollers clean really seems to help engines operate smoothly over gaps like switch tracks or crossings. Apply the procedure on your engines, whistling tenders, illuminated passenger cars, and searchlights and I think you'll find the trains will perform better with this improved electrical connection.

How to add a transformer controlled 2 position reversing unit to a Lionel MPC manual reverse (engine controlled) reversing unit switcher engine. I installed a 101-1 reversing unit from a postwar 211 Texas Special Alco parts engine with some modification and I believe this would also work with the 8111 DT&I MPC engine. Lionel 671 671RR 681 682 2020 turbine repair sticking wheels erratic lurching operation
มุมมอง 20K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Lionel worm gear drive motors may have rough drive train operation from sticky grease on the back side of the drive wheels on the worm gear shaft when the brass bushing is worn behind one of those drive gears. It can also occur with Lionel turbine engines when the rear drive wheels are too wide on the shaft and the flanges contact the next set of wheels since they are so close.

This repair video was done really well. I like the fact that even though you ran into some operational issues you also offered sound modifications that allowed the coal loader to operate properly. Well done!👍
Thanks, helpful video. I took mine apart about 2 months ago and just tried to put it back together. I didn't understand how the cams were supposed to go back in. It works as good as yours!
Thanks so much . I repaired one switch only 3 to go . Very helpfulll. Thanks
My question to you is why change out the motor assemblies?? Those engines run fine with there original motors. Also what did you do with the original motors?? Just wondering.
Very interesting video. A friend of mine has a Lionel small layout (I model in HO) and he tells me every time his engine (a diesel w/ 4 wheel trucks) goes through the diverging route on this turnout, the engine slows down quite a bit. His other turnout on his layout does not do this. I tried to help him troubleshoot it over the phone (we live far apart), but so far no luck. Have you seen this issue before and would you have any idea what the issue might be. Thanks. Phil
I'm looking for a video of taking off and replacing the back plate. Everybody bypasses that part. I have a very used O22 switch that needs work.
Hello and I watched my video again at looks like at 2:15 you can see the little screws on the back which hold the cover on. Nothing to it just remove those little flat blade screws and cover comes right back exposing the insides.
Magna-Traction is best because there are no stupid traction tires to replace!
Absolutely and since magnetraction works so well I have it on 95% of my engines.
Moving with authority with the initial wheel spinning! 😮
😮how do you reset the circuit breaker
I've seen that only early transformers had manual resets for circuit breakers and as far as I know all have had automatic resets after it cools for a number of seconds. I watched my video again and at 3:45 it appears the circuit breaker is the black box at the lower right, below the whistle rectifier disc. If there is no continuity through that part I imagine it would need replaced and good luck repairing your KW.
How is it not shorting out?
Thanks for watching the Lionel magnetraction trains ripping in the snow and I understand that snow just isn't a good enough conductor of electricity to short out the rails. I'm sure there is a conductor chart out there somewhere with all metals and insulators on it and somewhere in between the them is snow. Since the voltage is so low we don't have to worry about getting shocked either and I really need to test them under water to take it to the next level:)
my first switch was saved!! thank you. ive got 3 more to fix lol
Good luck on the switch restorations and I've still yet to see a Lionel O22 switch that didn't work and I've restored at least a couple dozen.
all that has to be done is to take the brush housing cover off. Clean the drums first with the spring and brushes behind them along with the armature that it touches you will then not have the problem of the train starting in reverse.. plus the train will start and pull in a much lower and steady gear.
just added a small loop with some vintage track i bought from a show. cant wait to see if it works. very informal.
I enjoy restoring the old trains and almost everything works, everytime, since the old stuff is really great quality.
Wonderful post war steamers all great runners and pullers nice collection!
Thanks for enjoying some of he best of Lionel postwar magnetraction just like I do.
Wow, this is awesome!! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for enjoying the video and I'm really attempting to capture what we hear, see, and feel when we run the trains, so others may understand just a bit of why we do what we do. Happy Railroading!
@@trainzone1073 Any chance you could post up a track plan diagram? Did you design this using a software program like RR-Track, Anyrail, or SCARM? Thanks for sharing!
@@TexasTedS This layout is a duplicate of the best layout that I ever built as a youngster and at the end are the pictures of the original design with elevated track allowing two train operation along the long loop. I built this commerative layout using crossings instead of elevated track since I had the room. I took all the video of the layout at the end for duplication and in the description it lists my diameters of curves and switch tracks, thanks again for enjoying the trains.
Nice video - very informative.
I think Joshua Lionel Cohen was deaf
One thing you didn't cover that gave me a fit was how center rail power gets from track to the rest of the mechanism, that little tab just down from the post that moves the switch. I adjusted that tab and made it work but I'm not sure how.
I have the die cast Lionel 027 #239 with smoker. Runs great. I've got a whistling tender for my 2026 Adriatic 2-6-4. My Adriatic engine needs a new E-unit as the lever came off and will not CA glue back on. I've also got another Lionel 027 Scout #8303 that is plastic with a smoker. And I've got a Lionel 027 4-4-2 Atlantic #8142 that's also a smoker. What kinda smoke fluid do you use? Or do you have to use the Lionel smoke tablets? Cheers from eastern TN
Glad you enjoyed the fun 233 and that's been the best smoker I've ever owned. I use the Lionel MPC smoke fluid from the 1970s since I grew up with it and to me it's a little different aroma than their newer liquid smoke. I use liquid in my postwar steamers also just let them sit a minute or so after running prior to adding more fluid. You can use the original pellets in the postwar smokers however it's much more expensive and they're more prone to clogging, however I still use some Lionel pellets since they also have their own unique smell. Some people use scented smoke fluids from pumpkin pie to peppermint.
Can you let me know what Lionel dual motor train you have that pulls all of those cars? I need a dependable and tuff train. - Thanks.
Thanks for viewing the trains and if you run conventional operation like I do and don't mind the mechanical reversing units with the lever than I have your answers. The cheapest most dependable, Lionel modern dual Pulmor motor diesels with 12 wheel drive magnetraction I've found must have the mechanical reversing unit which makes them older so then they ALSO have the manadatory brass drive gear down inside the die cast metal power trucks. The motor armature drives this gear so it needs to be strong and kept greased. Their newer stuff I know by 1995 with the electronic reversing units (which I do like) they had plastic gears which I've seen broken-stripped out on the metal drive axle shaft 50% of the time (such as a 18220 & 18223.) Go with something stronger like the 8458, 8585, 18200, 18203 which are from the 1980s. Seen in the video pulling strong was the early 1980s Lionel 8157 Santa Fe Trainmaster dual Pulmor motor 8wd magnetraction diesel which has the brass gears too, plus its heavy with its steel gas tank. Check out my SnowTrains Compilation video on my channel where I have the 8585 and 18200 churning through deep snow season after season. Good Luck and Happy Railroading!
I have both pairs. I still oil mine. It's enemy is bone dry neglect.
WD40 was another of Al’s no-nos. It ends up leaving a gummy residue
Lubricant on solenoid should be a few flecks of powdered graphite, not oil. This recommendation came from a now deceased Lionel Service Station owner and long standing TCA member Al Franceschetti who was my friend
Why would you do that? You just made the hole larger so that the replacement stud now wobbles. Just grab the bad stud with a pair of pliers and give a small wiggle. The back half of the rivet will just pop off without damaging the hole.
When the nut is tightened on the stud all is tight and It wouldn't budge and with just a small piece was stuck on the back and with no Dremel there we were. It's not pretty I know.
Pretty trains I love them alot
Thanks for viewing the trains and Lionel really made some great stuff that lasts, and some not so great. I've been fortunate to be able to restore a bunch of different types and designs and now I'm fascinated with their really heavy early postwar, dual motor, magnetraction diesels.
@@trainzone1073 You welcome and yes they have I still have my first Lionel which is the Hogwarts Express the first one not the lion chief version and I also have Lionel battery trains from learning curve
I haven't gone through the comments so if I repeat something someone else suggested sorry. For the Q-Tip, all you need are a bamboo skewer and some cotton balls. Wind the cotton around the stick. This also has the advantage that you can make them any length and you can bend/break them into a curved shape to reach odd places. The old ink erasers work great for cleaning contacts. They are slightly abrasive. The crumbs are easy to remove. Also I like DeoxIT. I know people love WD-40 but it is a water displacement fluid to prevent rust. "WD-40® Lubricant Spray. Stops squeaks. Removes and protects. Loosens rusted parts. Frees sticky mechanisms. Drives out moisture." For lubrication I recommend Door-Ease Lube Stik or similar. It has the added benefit of not attracting dust. Also I like a little ArmorAll on plastics to feed them and give them a little shine but some others might not agree. Wintergreen oil has been used to soften rubber but it's expensive. Test in a small area first since it's hard to say how it may react with your particular type of rubber. Can't go too wrong with a mild detergent and water. Just a few things I've learned from working on my father's Flyers over the years. "Use it up wear it out, make it work or do without." Great work. Keep 'em running.
9 out of 10 times one if the drive wheels are loose on the axle. Only way I found is using jb weld on the axle press the wheel back on let it sit and its fixed. Tip: put a piece of tape on the axle shaft up around the bearing so the jb weld doesnt bond the axle to the bearing.
Yes excellent and I had a loose one on a 2344 diesel and had luck with some locktite and like you said keep it out of the bearing.
Now I have to know how magnatraction works.
How Magne-Traction works: Magne-Traction works by placing a permanent Alinco magnet either inside the axle or right above it. The magnetism travels through the axle, through one drive wheel, through the rails, and back through the other drive wheel like an electrical circuit, holding the train to the rails-as long as you used steel track. It works really well on prewar T-rail track. Applying electricity to the circuit creates magnetic flux: Magnetic flux is a measurement of the total magnetic field which passes through a given area. It is a useful tool for helping describe the effects of the magnetic force on something occupying a given area. Therefore the higher the power, the higher the magnetraction. Welcome to the Wonderful World of Lionel Magnetraction. Read more: dfarq.homeip.net/what-is-a-magne-traction-train/#ixzz8EBb5uDdx
@@trainzone1073 thank you for the lesson man. and here I was just randomly scrolling videos and popped onto yours. what a fun bit of history.
Yes Sir my man. The 700e platforms AKA The 773 you were mentioning is much larger in hight and length and weighs about 7-7.5lbs without the metal tenders. Over-all these weigh about 10+lbs. And really require a minimal track diameter of 042" for safe operation, 031 or 027 definitely not gonna work out too well with one of these big boys.
Ha just found this message cleaning out my folder and thanks for watching. I picked up a Lionel 746 steamer after someone commented on how I didn't have one and what a big machine that one is. You are reminding me that the 773 needs to arrive at some point and what do you think of the motors, are some different or slow, is the Gold Stack motor required?
on turbines its common to find loose wheels most of the time its the rear set please do not use a vise to reset them use a wheel cup
Need info on the drop chute solenoid. Mine is frozen.
Very good video, you explain this well! You did not skip anything you showed where you used what tools to make the repair. Excellent excellent video thank you again .Bcad1979
Thanks for watching and I see this is from last summer. I really enjoy the turbines and it took me so long to figure out what was going on I just had to try to help somebody else avoid the frustration..
I absolutely Love these.... Thank you so much!! My name is Paul Thompson & My family resided at 1226 SW Kenworthy drive from 1973 to 1986. I am currently scratch building a CN&W Switching layout in H.O. Scale which will include many of these locations.
Excellent, I knew someone would finally appreciate the old Ankeny trains. I wish I would have gotten so many more pictures including the old siding north to Alleman along Hawkeye Park which originally was the Fort Dodge, Des Moines, and Southern. That original track then paralleled on the east side of the C&NW main line south and was in the weeds behind Nevelyn Jr HIgh School, then was used south of Magazine Road as a long siding and also to the the AGI Warehouse. Don't forget the siding going west over Ordnance Road through the Pioneer Lumber yard and also a long siding along the track to the John Deere plant:)
That's pretty impressive for a Scout. Nice job.
Glad you enjoyed the Scout magnetraction and after restoring and testing the engine you saw why I just had to make the video, that little engine almost defies logic.
I run my o scale trains outdoors and got an idea one morning while clearing snow from layout by hand..I thought well my lionel 8030 gp9 has a plow on the front so why not set it up before snow storm and let it run the loop at half throttle and leave it running through storm just to see if it can keep its track plowed till storm was over..it ran 22.5 straight hours only derailing once cause of a cat and we got 5 inches of snow fall that night. At one point it almost was defeated but it pushed through to the end.
Happy you enjoyed the snow trains and sorry for the late reply. That's awesome that the 8030 pulled through and these Lionel trains really can impress.
i have a 1947 Lionel 726 Berkshire & 2426W Lionel Lines Whistle Tender. my father bought this new in '47 or '48. i came across one of your repair/refurbish videos and wondered if you had one for this specific engine & tender. last time i had it checked for operation it ran fine, but that was perhaps 10 years ago or so. i'd like to see if i can refurbish it myself as i'd like to sell it to someone who would appreciate it. the market looks to me like a couple hundred dollars but i'm not going to let it go for that. i do, however, want to make sure it's in good working condition. can you point me in the right direction?

Hello, thanks for watching and sorry for the late reply and I'll bet you have it running well by now. With the steamers disconnect some of the drive wheel linkage, drop the motor out of the shell watching the smoke piston linkage. Clean and oil the motor, grease the gears just like on the diesels. Same type reversing unit too. Happy Railroading.
You should leave your politics out of it...better to make friends than enemies...like you just did.
You are in Denver? So am I
Great video -- I ran into the same problem with a 736 Berkshire and did what you did -- press the wheels on the driving axle very slightly together. It was also necessary to very slightly spread the blind wheels on the adjacent axle. Performance is much better now. Thanks for providing this knowledge!
We are always learing in this hobby aren't we and since it took me so much time to figure out what the heck was going on that I just had to make the video to hopefully help others keep their sanity and not give up on their broken trains. Happy Railroading!
When I was a kid Tri-ang had Magnetraction , I think they licensed it off Lionel . I always thought it was a gimmick . Now I see I was wrong .
Glad you enjoyed the magnetraction battles I had never heard of Tri-ang so I checked them out and thanks for letting me know about those trains.
Cool layout but be careful not to step on the trains. As others pointed out a better layout than some on tables and plywood. Nice collection of Lionel stuff.
Thanks for watching and I make the carpet layout videos so we can watch Lionel in action any time we want without having a permanent layout like myself, and it will come down soon this spring. It's a lot of work to find and restore good trains and accessories at a fair price but we operators and collectors know it's worth the effort.
Kinda reminds me of trains busting snow on the Donner Pass.
Thanks for watching Lionel in the snow and imagine how deep it's been out there the last couple months with the snow burying ski lifts it was so deep.
do not use oil on the coil plunger replace contacts with new oils
Very cool.
I think this is the best carpet layout on youtube !
Glad you enjoyed the set up and appreciate this comemorative layout design.
So glad you did a Turbine comparison. They blow the doors off any other postwar steamer, including the Berkshire. I own several of each, and the Turbines rule in my book. Also very easy to service.
Glad you enjoyed the video and I love the turbines and I'll keep that 682 forever.
Now that is a true carpet central!
I love carpet layouts so much for their sound muffling that when I eventually build a real layout I'm unfortunately going to want carpet & pad for roadbed...
nice
Glad you enjoyed it too and I feel I must continue to try to capture and share the real fun of Lionel trains.
Love Your Roster of Engines and Rollingstock.
