Ironic that George Cole was playing the father (Denholm Elliott's role) in the stage production, as I believe Elliott was the original choice for Arthur Daley in Minder. P.S. I seem to recognise Richard O'Callaghan from Carry On At Your Convenience!

Nowadays MSM, BBC et al, has gone into complete censorship. The Controllers, etc, were never great thinkers. The idiocy they display is just of exerting personal power regardless of any rationale. Interestingly, they still go in for 'last minute cancellation' as their favourite weapon against 'free speech.'

I think Dennis Potter would be outraged and disgusted by British TV today. There's no room in the schedules for controversial and truly thought-provoking drama. Everything Potter protested against in the 1990s is magnified by triple figures through the television of today. The slow death of TV from yesteryear is the stone cold death of TV today. Nothing speaks to me in todays vacuous and dumb down TV landscape. The betrayal is complete ...

It’s a incendiary piece of work. A total belter. I wish there was a modern “play for today” or just more single television plays like Mr. Potter wrote. Moonlight on the highway is another brilliant one as well as all the obvious stuff. Mr. Potter’s interview with Melvyn Bragg, his final interview is one of the greatest, most beautiful statements about life & work & England that there has ever been. He was a great writer, truly great. He is sorely missed

It was absolutely a religious play. In the same way that something like oranges are not the only fruit was. Potter himself said it’s a bad biblical story about a beleaguered house. If an angel comes to free the afflicted, that’s just sanctimony. If it’s a devil, therein lies the point. & as the invalid daughter is revived by a terrible vile, beastly act, her cry of protestation is not against the violation, or the useless efforts of prayer, but against her father. It’s a lightning bolt of a play. Necessary & still hugely valid now.

Look what we have now. No size requirements, no powers, no backing by bosses or the Government, no respect. In those recent past days the detectives were very effective, villains were scared of them, and respected them. That's all disappeared now. Those old detectives must be laughing at rainbow flags, gender bullshit, zero practical effectiveness, like the rest of the sensible population. Villains do as they please now with impunity.

When he talks about Tommy on Rescue Me it reminds me of A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream where the characters on the show watch their behavior get acted out in a play within a play at the end and they don’t make the connection that the things happening on stage mirror what has been happening in real life. Then Puck makes a statement to the audience watching saying that if they see nothing in this play that mirrors their own lives than the joke’s on them.
