I returned to Victoria 2 in 2024 - Why is it still so awesome?!
Victoria 2 is one of the Paradox Classics (TM), but how does it shape up in 2024? When the game released way back in 2010, it was well before Paradox truly took off as a recognized blockbuster company. In some ways and even though it does indeed take time to learn, Victoria 2 offers a great base for a strategy game, and in many ways, alongside the fabulous music, makes it so. But the lack of numerous post-launch updates and DLCs, which Paradox has become known for ever since CK2, makes Victoria 2 feel kind of featureless and empty compared to anything that came after it.
It is kind of crazy to think that Victoria 2 released before even CK2 did, but time must always move on. So, what do you think of Victoria 2, and did you play it when it released, or have you played it at all? Let me know in the comments, and make sure to leave a like, a comment, and subscribe to the channel!

CK3 Invented Paradox's Single Best Feature Ever

An INSANE Comeback! Victoria 3 2023 and 2024 Review and Guide
Bannerlord mod for ck3 is stupid, i mean it’s its so generic.
What a tool
we need the revamp of Christianity as a whole imo, the church didn't split until 1054, they gradualy grew apart until the excommunication of each others. Before the split, they focused on the miaphysite and the nestorians too 😂 so there's a need of let's say strugle mechanic for the church, to keep it or break it apart. Every kingdom or emperor also need their own bishops, or metropolitans, there should be 5 tittle of popes/patriarchs too and every king or emperor could influence all 5 elections. Also, during Justinian reign, the Miaphysite (Apostolic and Coptic) almost unite with the Chalcedonian (Orthodox and Catholic). So either HRE or ERE could push for the reunification of the churches, inturn either abolishing their popes or make them new popes.
In the Orthodox world, the Emperor and Patriarch/Pope had are the same, so the emperor could crown themselves whilst in the catholic world, the emperor need to be crowned, so this thing can start to happen after the split.
there's also a need for update for Orthodox churches, there are 4 old patriarchates, and the patriarch can appoint metropolitans, and these metropolitans can grow into a patriarchate. That's what happened to the Russian patriarchate, they started of as a bishopric in Kiev iirc, well that's what happens to all other patriarchates like Bulgaria, Georgia, Serbia, etc. When a realm is big enough, and they rule a different culture and language from the old patriarchates, they can establish their own patriarchates because Orthodox churches aren't like the catholics where everyone should understand latin, everyone should bow to rome, and rome are the one to made laws, Orthodox are basically a council of elders from different communities trying to benefit their people while also keeping the church intact, well you could say that I guess.
the admin gov already opened a path for that, like that Empire faith, so if an orthodox realm establish a new patriarchate they can change the law of their church, like language from greek into lets say slavonic for russian and serbian, and then inheritance, woman can inherit lands in the Nubian lands and in some cases, the king can participate in masses, yea a lay man like the king, can help the priest in masses. This can also make the Orthodox to have crusade too, for some patriarchates, like how the russian patriarch support the expansion of russia into muslim tatar lands
Is there no was to play elder kings closer to Skyrim in date? I was imagining playing as a random landless person walking around and either hear about and see what happens, possibly have events seen of the Dragonborn doing stuff while I do my things and the like. Adding dragon born powers to us would be too much in my opinion.
Ha funny, i also tried it again with HFM a week ago. Still like it, but man it shows its age. With a few qol changes and more diplomatic options, it would be great. With a better balanced economy and and frontlines even better.
Love both of vic2 and 3 but arguably, Vic2 is the best of the two.
Victoria 2 has been my favorite Paradox game since I first touched it 5 years ago. My copy is pirated so I cannot tell, but I estimate I have at least 800 hours in it. No other Paradox game comes close in the graphic design, gameplay, music, and possible alternate histories. I also play on a low end laptop, and Vic2 is one of the few games that is perfectly optimized and never crashes or makes my computer overheat. The only bad thing I have to say is that Vic2 ruined all other Paradox games for me as none can live up to it.
EU3, Victoria 2 and CK3 are the games I have spent the most time on. This game has seemed so complicated and that has put me off - along with the awful launch product - for years. But I started playing the other day and it really seems like an amazing game. Victoria 3 was a big let down so I am glad I have a new strategy game to sink some hours in to.
it's all just variations on the same spreadsheet simulator with flavour text...
Have you ever played ck3?
Victoria 2 is not a good game. Simply put. Not a good GAME. It’s a very interesting experiment in game design but it’s extremely micromanagey and doesn’t give you a lot of information very well.
And yet i own both vic 2 and 3 and keep having fun on vic 2 and get bored in 3h on vic 3.
then read the tutorial in the game, you're just coping for the sake of doing it
@@willaXDI don't care about your personal experience, Victoria 3>Victoria 2 objectively, and there are mow players playing Vic 3 now than Vic 2 peak, decent game for it's time, terrible now
I think anbenar is also getting a CK3 mod as well.
I will never come back to Vic2. I cannot handle vic2 late game. It's one of the most miserable experiences with a Paradox game ever.
Why
@@falconerua5734 you can be the most liberal society in existence and you'll still spend all of the late game battling communist and fascist uprisings. It's just not fun
@@falconerua5734 Bad Diplomacy, Bad UI, Bad Map design (outdated perhaps, but the color scheme makes it so hard to see things), Bad Internal Politics, Puppet States are broken and useless, Terrible Warfare system, connecting them to pops was an interesting idea but very badly implemented. The only saving grace is the economy, which is made annoying and bad by the UI, Capitalism not working and the only real solution being micromanagement (never a good sign in game design), clashing with Internal Politics, meaning that I can’t have a Democratic Republic if I want a functional economy, I have to go full on Communist Dictatorship (despite being the opposite in real life, talk about realism which so many annoying Victoria 2 “fans” point to when talking about the economy and ignore everything else such as how warfare is technically more realistic since emperors, Presidents and Prime Ministers rarely micromanaged or even lead armies into battle anymore). So Victoria 2 was an interesting idea, but a terrible game.
@@generaltom6850 bad map design? That you are blind is not the game's fault, the same with the UI. All the information you need is directly there where you touch. You don't like micromanagement? So why would you play a game in which you are a country? If you just want to look at the map and do nothing you can play victoria 3. No, in the game you are not an emperor, prime minister, president or whatever, you are the country, that is why even if your country falls to rebels you can continue playing .
@@generaltom6850 *Capitalism does not work in game, because it's supposed to be played by someone, and this especific game relies on micromanagment. It's no bad thing, it's the strong point and quality of this game, your opinions have no value to the taste of others, and if every "good" thing in game sounds bad for you, the game is not for yourself* *In other words, you don't demand this shit, so search in the free market for casual games like valorant or whatever a my little pony fan would be interested in. But regardless, this game is for people who like being a invisible hand behind everything, create a communist dystopia in some part of it, not a game for you, my little pone greatest fan*
It'd be interesting to analyze the major differences between V2 & V3 - what they do differently, similarly and what lessons V3 could take from V2
Vicky 2 the classic ❤
Quais mods você está usando no seu CK3 padrão ? O gráfico está muito bonito ...
vic 2 is the beast game ever! victoria 3 was a giant mistake from paradox that let down all of the vic 2 fans📉📉📉
no
It's nowhere close to the best game ever, objectively speaking. It's an old game with many of its own pains and it shows.
@@tboicovasobjectively speaking you are right but the thing is that I love it despite it's shortcomings, vic 2 has all of the best features of a grand strategy game and paradox had a chance to improve all of the things it does right and fix the things it gets wrong while still keeping the magic that is in the game, but what did they do instead? throw all of the potential to shit and make a broken game with a shameful combat system
@@ichbinlubin I personally do not think vic2 is all that great in warfare either. You just move a number into the square and fight another number. Riveting. If any Paradox game has the best land combat it's HoI4. But I would never ask another game to be the same as the game that came before it. Victoria 3 clearly innovatives on what a combat system should be and I would never fault the game for it or ask it to be something else. Despite its own flaws.
@@tboicovas Yeah, the only good thing was the economy, and the lack of information and the bad UI and map design which made it difficult to see important information really ruined that. Diplomacy, Warfare, Internal Politics, Revolutions and Rebellions as well as Capitalism. These are all terrible in Vic 2. I much prefer Victoria 3 as a game.
16:50 Yeah, I knew it.. I can't even pinpoint exactly what it was, because your pronunciation and cadence is in general very good, but it didn't take many minutes until I could pinpoint your home country ;p Although, sometimes, the _lack of_ a pronounced accent can be the clearest giveaway
So you rank hoi4 6/5? All you need to do is spam out division like the world I gonna end and turn facial to invade everyone around you for fun.
The temptation to play a nation in Vicky 3 to then continue playing that nation in HOI4.
do it!
Should i try out Imperator rome
YES
absolutely!
Another year without a Warhammer conversion :(
My only complaints: - Lack of National Diplomatic Actions compared to other paradox games like Stellaris, and Victoria 3. - Internal Politics are good but can be the best among all Paradox games. For instance, playing Rome as a Republic is awesome, but being unable to engage with all senators and not just the Party Leaders is a shortcoming. Imagine if you could sway a few Populist Senators by Bribing them and defecting from their Party Leader's vote. The Senate view could have been much better, with tiny character portraits so we could see what characters are senators. Also being Imperator and bringing people to Trial is really fun but what if instead of a base success/failure, the chance for the given trial is much more dynamic and is determined by many more factors than already in-game. Imagine if you fail to jail said Character as Dictator/Imperator but ultimately you want to ignore the trial and have them arrested anyway. I wish we could do that, and the success rate of that would be based on the influence the Dictator has versus the number of loyal cohorts the given character has. If you fail to arrest them in this new action, then that player would flee Rome but would return with an army of supporters. This would make the game much more immersive!
I own almost all, yet still came around to watch. Great job! ❤
I would definitely not start with the HoI4 tutorial as it's totally broken by the DLC.
But what about March of the Eagles???

I'm currently beginning my quarterly attempt to wrap my head around Victoria 3, which I will eventually give up on and go play something else

Had never heard of Godherja before, crazy
Fallen Eagle goes well with the Crusader Wars mod that brings Total War Attila battles to CK3 On that list, Shogunate, Tales of Ireland and Bronze Age Reborn are the ones that interest me the most. The main problem with CK3 is that it's wide as the ocean and deep as a puddle so I like the conversion mods focused on one culture or one specific area more. In comparison I hated the CK2 Warcraft mod because it tried to have everything and it blended poorly, and the CK3 sequel doesn't look much better. I would have preferred a more novel part of the world like Northern Azeroth during the unification of the human tribes with the elves in the north, the dwarves in the south, and trolls everywhere.
3:53 I'm still waiting for Rhun update
Are any of the total conversion mods compatible with the Roads to Power DLC/landless adventurer content?
There was nothing called the Byzantine Empire. It was and only Roman empire. People should read the history and convey the correct history when it is clear, accurate and available.
Despite being a huge Game of Thrones and Warcraft nerd who loves the Roman Empire, I still think Godherja: the Dying World is the best mod on this list. I kid you not, when I first started playing the mod, I spent the first three hours just reading the lore of the different empires and characters. It is such a unique and ambitious mod in every way with some really interesting lore behind it.
yeah godherja is amazing, i love it
By now, the only world i want to play i feel it's still missing is Warhammer. Anyways, I just want to thank the creators of all this mods, you give me life buddies.
Hey what are the mods in the intro?
How tf do i download this shit if i have the game on version 1.13 and the AGOT mod is only on 1.12, and how do i switch back to that version?
There is also a Fire Emblem mod called Fodlan And an Eragon one
I haven't purchased any DLC for CK3 yet, do you recommend this as my first or should I go for another? All three expansions look great.

Legit just need a mod that makes the game stable and smooth.
I hope that enough Africans see it, and very diverse African modders make one about Africa before the colonisation time. It had unique ways of govermnent, from sacred kings to almost pure communist elder circles electing rulers. Add some magic and myths from different tribes and you'll have something that no Western game maker could ever think of.
How would it be communist if there's rulers? Sounds more like the Anglo-Saxon witan, which was a council of nobles. One of their duties was choosing the king from amongst the extended royal family.
@@TheRedHaze3 Well some tribes really had chosen rulers, and generals might be fired right after a war, so they wouldn't cling to power. That's more communist that Stalin, who was just a red tsar. Also they really shared more, check out the Ubuntu philosophy, as another example of a way better collective awareness than in the west.
@@KootFloris if only communism includes slavery and despot rulers then yes there was communism in Africa
They may have laid the groundwork for republics and theocracies with landless play because you have a lot more smooth transition to unrelated dynasties like becoming historical characters mid play
Most important reason: CK2 is free!
