Romanticization Of Self-isolation As Self-improvement
There's a very questionable narrative being thrown online around as of lately: It implies that we must separate ourselves from the world, view our friends as obstacles, and retreat into solitude to become this perfect, idealized version of ourselves.. and only then will we be ready to live the life we have always deserved. This narrative may be seductive but it is dangerously incomplete. It's not that we don't need to take care of ourselves or establish healthy boundaries but this idealized view of personal growth ignores the fact that true self-growth often requires engaging with others, even when it's difficult.
The question is: Why has there been a rise in social media trends glorifying self-isolation as a form of self-improvement despite the well-documented negative consequences of self-isolation? What are the communities feeding into this narrative and why? When did this idea first emerge? How did quarantine feed into the growth of these communities? Why is this narrative so popular, especially with young teens and young adults? And lastly, what are the consequences for both individuals and the collective by adopting these narratives? Do they do more harm than good?
I hope to answer these questions throughout the video.

I've been doing this for 2 decades. I don't know how to stop. I'm trying to go to church. I used to go to Meetup but I moved and there's not as much stuff going on out here.

I think the first step would be to figuring out why you keep isolating yourself and working from there. For me, personally, I find that the desire to isolate myself comes from limiting beliefs I had adopted growing up. Ex. "They're gonna leave anyways so I might aswell leave first." or "I am afraid of getting hurt so I refuse to open myself up to people." By figuring out the root issue, I can work on why I have that belief and deconstructing that belief into one that's more healthy. I hope this helps you :)

I think society has glamorised loneliness as a way of justifying our inability to form meaningful connections and trick our minds into thinking that we are better off without people

This is so true. I myself was a ‚victim‘ of this mentality and I was so miserable, Even though I dont regret it in the long run, because i was able to cut off the most toxic people in my life… it could have been so much easier afterwards. More people should see this! I wish you the best! Thank you
