Amen Brother
I like this idea better than catching them in a bucket because I'm a bit squeamish, I've been trying to get over it because I know how good they are for the chickens.
Has having soldier flies close to your coop help with keeping the amount of house / horse flies inside of the coop?
Curious as well
Where is the follow up video? Similar idea and I'm sure there are lessons...
Thank you for your comment. Life got in the way of almost anything. Hopefully things will slow down so i can put out another follow up. when I did fire it up, the chain kept hanging up as if it didnt have enough torque. So, it did have some issue that I havent had time to address.
I really like this design, thanks!

Hi
Hello, how are you today?
Hello, how are you today?
@hogsrgr8 how many box do you think I would need to produce daily 300 grams of larvae?
300 grams? In what time frame?
@@hogsrgr8 1 day
@hogsrgr8 So, I understand that not all the larvae leave the tank and some mature and become flies inside the tank, is that correct? But in that case, In the event that the larvae mature inside the box to become flies, by adding more organic matter or simply opening the box, the flies will escape, right?
Any flys will enter and exit through one of the 3 openings.
If all the larvae come out of the tupperware, how do you get some to become flies and lay eggs? And could this build work in 16 Celsius? Thanks
They are actually flies inside the bin and then crawl out as larvae

Say how did you cut out the pointed edges in the pvc pipe 2:20
Sure, I used a chop saw
And what size pvc sorry I’m asking a lot of questions but I’m new to this
I don’t mind at all. I used 1 1/2 pvc
Thank you for this easy build idea!
You are so welcome!
You’re welcome. I hope you find it as easy as I did to build
What happens when your larvae come out at night ??
I really don’t know. I think they die because the first thing the flock does when the auto door opens is run to those bins
Honestly, I believe they’re still there in the morning because it’s the first place my chickens run to
Could they be nocturnal !
@@Lucyorganicgarden I actually think they stay inside the bin. They only come out when there is light shining through the exit pipes
I agree with you brother. Thank you for your message.
Easter! It’s time for that special recollection of the year. God bless you
But wouldn't having some crown help with it not washing out in places? Provided side drainage is good.
With a tractor, you can angle the implements to get the crown
@@hogsrgr8 That I know. Didn'tseem that way in the video
Very good sharing ❤❤❤
Thank you
You’re 100% correct! Great idea for next year. Thank you for the idea and God Bless you
My new favorite TH-cam video. No bs, and straight to the point! Hogsrgr8 thanks a lot for the great video.
Thank you so much for the comment. I do t like to fill my videos with fluff
If you grew black oil seed sunflowers, you would have some stored protien for the chickens for when the BSF production falls off in the cool/cold weather & humidity changes.
This looks great. Could you list the supplies you used? (size of bin, length of pipe, etc.) Thanks!
Honestly, the size of the box can be whatever your needs are. I would NOT go any smaller than 1 1/2” piping
no video of it in use???
I had one but I think I uploaded to my business Facebook page instead. Trax-n-tractor excavation
I took an old box blade and arched a frame across it from front to back. I put a trailer hitch in front and wheels behind it to turn it into a mini land / drive way leveler. The tractor's 3 point receiver hitch controls the blade height. Send me a number and I will send you the pictures.

Did you drill any drainage holes in the bottom? I'm wondering how you deal with the liquid leachate that accumulates as well as aeration..
Thank you for the comment, I did later on. It is certainly needed
@@hogsrgr8 Yeah, it really is incredible how quickly they break things down and how much leachate comes with it.. It's a creature out of this world in the best possible way (proving liquid gold fertilizer and they themselves a source of protein).. Thanks for sharing

Ever have mice or small rats getting in through the PVC?
No, not so far I haven’t. Have you?
@@hogsrgr8 no, I haven’t done a system like this, my bin is closed off with a lid and I’ve been wondering if folks with intakes for the flies to come and lay eggs whenever they want have problems. Good to know you don’t!

Do you think 1/4 inch pipe would work? I have some left over from another project
Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, I don’t think you will be happy with the results. There are A LOT of larva trying to get out at any given time. I seriously mean a bunch
How do you control odor?
Honestly, I don’t! The chicken area is about 75 yards from the house. I smell it occasionally but not very often. When I go check the feed and water and clean the coop there is a little Oder but not terrible
So, did this build work for you as you thought? I see the bucket type more often, but I have an old bin...
Yes, it works as planned! I have an auto opening door on my coop and all of my chickens run straight to both bins to pick off the worms that have dropped out at night. They also do this throughout the day
@@hogsrgr8 Thanks for the reply. I have a small flock, 10 hens with 2 roos. I still appreciate anything that helps with the feed bill.🙂
@@hogsrgr8this build is so cool! Thanks for sharing - I had the same question about the bucket but it looks like it doesn't matter as long as the bucket is close to the chickens so they have free access.

Oh yea, I’m a tong washer way back to the HACCP days😂. Thank you, I have fun doing them. Have a good day Rob, good to see you on here
It's fun to see different set ups for chickens. I love how you did the top of the water tube. I heard that water nipples make a wet mess. You should try the cups. I have my chicken food and water in the run. It keeps my coop cleaner. Thanks again. It's fun to be apart of a chicken community.
Thank you for your comment. You were right on point, the nipples are messy but easily fixed. I took 1/2 of a 4 inch sewer pipe and slightly angled it downward and into a catch pan so any drops would go into it instead of the floor. I guess I spend too much time just kicked back and watch them. What I’ve learned is that they also drink what little bit has made it’s way to the can. It’s a very fun time with them for sure. Have a blessed day friend
