    As a human caretaker, friend, mom and advocate of birds of many kinds for over 40 years, this study made me cry - in absolute happiness that someone is doing this kind of research for our fabulous, incredibly smart friends. I have seen so much over the years and had my birds learn to specifically ask for things they want to eat, drink, pet times, places they want to see in the house. PLEASE Publish and share the findings, and find some funding to continue the research. So many thanks to you and the team.

    Thoroughly depressing. Great for those who must suffer captivity, but keeping highly social, non-domesticated, flighted wildlife as pets is revolting. Especially after seeking out scenes of these species in the context they evolved to be in, within large flocks, exerting their own free will. Take the species name, and add "wild flock" to your video search terms. Compare those interactions to a touch screen requiring a human to operate. Then, if you keep a bird as a pet, go ahead and look at yourself in a mirror, and only a mirror for nearly all of your own social needs.

    Awwww...that was ADORABLE!!! Brought a tear to my eye, I don't know why. LOL. I wish I could keep a parrot. The problem is that they live for sooooo long and I don't think I can take up that responsibility for that long. Some of them can live to be 60 or 70 years old. It's like having a kid! So I stay parrot-less. But it's for the best. This is wonderful to see nonetheless!!!

    I don't understand why put them in the cage in the first place ? And why are the pet owners euphemistically called caregivers as if that makes caging animals better. Totally absurd. They'd have learned to bond with fellow birds if grew up in their natural habitat, not in some guilded cage with internet connection. It feels like a twisted black mirror episode. Sorry if I sound negative. But that's how I feel abou this.

    There is no science here. A bird makes are random squawk. --- That means that the bird wants to make a call? The bird rings a bell - which earned a treat reward prior - that means the bird wants to make a call? I think that means the bird wants to do Algebra. If we are going to interpret random movements as intent then I guess the outcomes can mean anything you want. The parrot touches a screen at the one place that has movement. That means the parrot knows that is another parrot and not just a video of a parrot? Where are the scientific controls? Where is the icon on the screen that does nothing? The blinking icon that turns off the call? The sample size was so small and it appeared to me that most of the results were highly debateable and could have been explained or interpret plenty of other ways. Parrots that are bonded to owners generally want to do things that please their owners. Did you hear all the happy sounds coming from the owners/observers? Those noises (and the constant food rewards) tainted the entire study. I can get a smart beagle to ring a bell for food and touch a tablet computer with his nose. There is nothing similar between a dog and a parrot. Sorry to burst bubbles. But this isn't proving anything.

    • @Janlssary
      @Janlssary ปีที่แล้ว

      i agree, also there were only 2 options for who to call, why not put 4 bird picture? screen has enough space

    • @occulta4249
      @occulta4249 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're absolutely right. I think they should have shown the birds a few times what the screen buttons do (start a call) and then left them alone with the screen, no human interference, not even being in the same room. Just set up a camera in the cage, and then watch what happens. If the birds then would repeatedly make calls and seem interested in the screen, without any food or attention reward from humans, that could perhaps prove genuine understanding of the what it means to "make a call".

    This is quite amazing. Imagine the cognition necessary to understand that they are seeing another live parrot on a flat screen! But it seems like a key ethical issue is giving the birds this capability that they apparently like, and then taking it away. As to the video itself, how about some music that's fun and uplifting, instead of childish and melancholy? Or no music at all!

  • @English_Lessons_Pre-Int_Interm

    so, it has never been done before? It feels like finding out about a new series which they have just started filming, and you have to wait for 5 years until you can binge watch them all :-) I am waiting for the rest of the research. PS I think you should make a system with 4 bells, and if the parrot rings a chosen bell, then a call will start with the corresponding parrot. I mean, each bell will have a photo of their birdmate, and humans will not have to wait around, and the parrots will call each other whenever they want. I guess the next grand step would be to teach them how to stop the calls. Subscribed! PSS and get rid of those millions of buttons which confuse the parrot. MAke a software which will have only 2 buttons: start a call, and end the call. And do not let the parrot tocuh those screens because those buttons will appear and confuse the bird. Just make a system connected to the tablet, but let the parrot use just the bells. Remove the touchscreen. remove the screen from the mischevous bird which will destroy it with its strong beak. Make 3 bells: 1) start the call 2) stop the call 3) choose the birdmate (4 sub-bells with plastic photos of the birfriends). All in all, 6 bells. Let the bird touch the bells, and not the screen.

      It depends on the bird, I’ve tried two separate times to provide my dusky with a ‘friend’ and he simply will not tolerate them. He demands complete attention and he refuses to share it with anyone else, he doesn’t even like me talking to another person while around him let alone another bird. Another reason it’s hard is the quarantine period, a new bird has to be separated for a time before introduction which makes it hard to do temporary trials. I suppose I should’ve brought home another parrot that was with him in the beginning but we didn’t know the sex of either and I didn’t want to deal with hormonal stuff and babies.
