Great breed, created by cross breeding the Welsh terrier with the otter hound, they were once used by the British police, before German shepherds.

Neither of my Airedales have had any problems with travelling by car, van, bus, train or even on the hovercraft to the Isle of Wight. However they do get very bossy if another dog comes near the vehicle, even to the point of grabbing the seat between their teeth. I find it hard to break this guarding habit as I travel alone and am driving. Any advice would be most welcome.

My Airedale died of cancer. I love Airedales but like Golden Retreivers , their bad breeding has resulted in a large number of dogs getting cancer. I can’t own another because of this.

Whether or not it was due to autoimmune disorder or not, both my Airedales died of the same problem, 45 years apart. Both pedigree British KC registered male dogs born in England but not related to each other, died of issues with their spleens & undiagnosed cancer in the liver. Gwinear was 8 yrs old, generally in good health, when he developed raging diarrhorea, sickness & lethargy etc. This went on for several weeks with vets being unable to find cause. Eventually they decided to operate & found his spleen had split & was leaking. Also cancer was in his liver & apparently spread so badly it was decided to euthinase. Had other dog breeds over some years, including a female Doberman who died at 13 yrs suffering from hypothyroidism. My second English Airedale was born in 2014 when my husband died. Reuben was always very healthy and active; a typical loyal exampl of his breed. In February this year, 2024 aged 9, he died very suddenly. We went for our morning 20min walk on lead as usual. Came in, Reuben went for very short drink & froze on the spot. His eyes had almost closed & I thought of allergy even anaphylaxic shock. Phoned vet & immediately took him to their surgery.His heart was pounding away now. Despite their efforts & on opening him up, was found his spleen had ruptured they were unable to save him. Also found to have cancer in his liver. Within 3 hours of seeming perfectly healthy and normal, he had basically bled to death. Reuben was everything one could wish for, the most loyal, loving, funny, intelligent being; he was my soulmate. I really still haven't got over the shock of him dying so quickly and, as much as I know Airedales to be the best most wonderful dogs, i can't go through that level of heartbreak again, especially from identical causes of death in both Airedales. Although issues with the spleen are occasionally mentioned, I don't feel it has ever been highlighted as a possible major problem for Airedales. For me, 45 years apart & at a similar age, it seems too much of a coincidence to go unrecognised for this terrier breed. I grew up with airedales… lovely, strong, loyal dogs. They definitely need a firm, assertive owner, but they are amazingly full of personality!!

I'm on my 7th Airedale. All mine are aloof towards strangers and they were properly socialized. They do warm up but it takes a while. My scotties on the other hand don't tend to warm up to anybody except the owners and additionally they pick one member of the family to be their bestie.😅

Will they do good in the heat of Texas? I would love to have one, but I’m concerned about their health him the hot and humid environment of south Texas.

I'm on our 7th Airedale and this particular one is not like our others. He goes ballistic when he sees another dog on our walks. It's been a long 4 years of frustration, however bringing another dog into our yard or home is no big deal. There's the initial stiffness they exhibit upon initial meeting then it's butt in the air and zoomies

A beautiful Airedale stays with me while her mum has chemo. I also have a male staffyx and we are both grieving my 3-legged NZ huntaway of 14 years. Roxyz the Airedale has brought so much healing to us both. Definitely an extraordinary dog breed.

Got my first Airedale two weeks ago from a reputable breeder. He is doing much better than I would have expected for only 12 weeks old. Couldn't be happier with him! !!

<looks at our youngun> Guard dog?!?! Bwahahahahaha! He'll bring them his favourite toy and ask for plays and scritchins. Wouldn't have it any other way. We have guard cats already.

Airdales are All Around Dogs, literally. Farm dogs, Hunters of small, medium, and large game. They're of good size, strength, and energy. When used as police and Military, that says it all as far as I'm concerned.

My Airedale was not intelligent. But he was Gay.

Airedalesare renounded for fast reactions. Mine will swat a spider with a paw faster than the eye can follow, much like a human would. Incidentally they do not only hunt "small" prey, they will take on a wild pig, jackal and even a wildcat.

If you dog has a low pray drive. It's not a good dog

Airedale’s are amazing dogs but boy do you have to be prepared for their intelligence, playfulness, stubbornness and need for exercise. They get bored very easily, you have to keep them engaged.

Intelligent and independent and proud. I love this breed!

In my experience, Airedale’s are super, super smart.

We had 2 120# , the best could be testy under certain circumstances otherwise marshmallows. Lap dogs too

I will own an Airedale someday. I'm sure one would fit right perfectly with my F1 Labradoodle. I had an unknown person show up one day, and I thought the doodle was literally going to take a chunk out of the guy....to say I was surprised was an understatement. I don't worry about the family with the doodle with them, but I definitely won't with an Airedale teaming up with him as well

They have big teeth, strong jaws they are agile and can easily dominate much bigger dogs.

My 7 year old Airedale, Maggie, loves every dog, big or small. As long as they aren’t puppies. She has to time for puppies. Doesn’t get aggressive, just ignores them.

The original creation of the breed began with the crossing of the extinct Black and Brown Terrier and the Otter Hound (breed to hunt otters in land or water). Swimming is a given for Dales. The Airedale, like its forefather Otter Hound has webbed paws. It was created to be a versatile breed capable of hunting fur or fowl and also to retrieve, point and flush. They have great potential for swimming provided the handler does the training. However, regardless of the Airedale's genetic heritage Dales may avoid water and will not swim if their fails to expose them to water.

Airedales are the best of dogs... They respond to interaction with their family... lots of walks in interesting places... They are great in pairs... As has been said by others, 'two Airedales ten times the fun.'

One of the smartest breeds! These dogs understand things like people do.

Great video. Airedale are incredible. I owned an Airedale & grew up with one. They're an extremely strong willed breed. They leave their mark on you. Few years ago I had a chat with a Military Officer who told me they use them for security work here in the UK. My boy Morgan stood 25" top of the shoulder & weighed around 80lbs...
