I have a query please help me! I have done many shots without using any overscan value which is rendering the Undistorted plates using RunWarp4 at the same resolution as the original plates. I have asked the vfx compositors if they need overscan renders of the UD plates but they say it's fine without it since I usually have low distortion values, mostly spherical lenses and that they haven't encountered any problems yet. But I'm concerned that they might see some problems with the CG renders after re-distorting the passes! Is it a project to project based workflow or an absolute necessity for each project as I have seen even big studios doing without overscan values added to UD plates? Thanks in advance!🙏🙏
The great thing about compositing is that in the end it is just pixel movement and changing their color components =) therefore good compositing artist can solve any task even if he does not have proper pipeline. But how many extra time does he take for that? That is why we recommend to do all the things properly. You can pump rubber boat by your mouth but is there any reasons to do that if you can use a pump? ;)
@@matchmovemachine Thank you for your quick response!🙏 I totally get what you mean here, as even I think that it is not the correct way to do any UD plates without overscan values because I see what happens when distortion is reintroduced while compositing with live action plates. Thanks a ton!🙏🙏
I have one question: would it not be better to move the chart or the camera to the distance of the witness mark we are shooting the lens at? Like, we are focusing the lens at 2 feet so the chart needs to be 2 feet away etc etc. I'm asking cause even with the greater DoF given by T22 the chart by physics will be only sharp at an inphinitesimal plane at the time. Depth of Field is just a "construct" where people decided what is acceptably sharp but in theory only one plane is sharp at the time.
Indeed, depth of field (DoF) is merely a construct, and even with a substantial DoF, the sharpest point will be located in the center. Therefore, it is crucial to determine the maximum grid blurring level before it becomes unresolvable in matchmove software. We will provide examples for reference in the near future. Ideally, moving the camera/grid for each focus distance mark would be the most efficient scenario, assuming no time constraints. However, practical considerations often introduce variables that deviate from this ideal scenario. Therefore, we recommend that the camera be fixed, the DoF be maximized, and as many focus distances as possible be captured without moving the camera. This approach is the most expedient.

Most of the vintage lenses has its own unique "character" due to manufacturing technology, so yes - in most cases they are more complex to work with them. Nice video thanks for posting! Doesnt nuke x generate some lens distortion from the 2d tracking data you give it? Which is better to undisort plates first or after? Or does it depend on how much good 2d tracking points you have?
Yes, the CameraTracker node can also generate Undistort, but we recommend using distortion grids for greater precision. Regarding the before/after comparison: The primary principle is that the camera should be solved based on undistorted data. Some software enables you to perform 2D tracking and undistortion concurrently (e.g., 3DEqualizer). You can perform 2D tracking and then undistort or vice versa (2D features will automatically adjust to the undistorted frame). Generally, we recommend performing undistortion first and then 2D tracking, as this avoids the need for redundant work in the event that your software does not support a parallel 2D tracking and undistortion workflow.

how did you make orientation inside 3dequalizer ? .. I use 3dequalzier since 4 years and every time I want to make an accurate orientation like syntheyes but I feel syntheyes is better than 3dequalzier
You can use geometry and project points onto it to set the orientation of the scene. Even just a card on the floor or wall can help. You can also set coordinates for 2d points, this will also set the scene. And you can also in 3d view just rotate or move the scene. And the last option is to set the scene in another program. 3dequalizer is a convenient and functional software that allows you to perform tasks in different ways, as well as to solve complex problems.
@@matchmovemachine my main software in VFX is 3dequalizer and recently I tried to use syntheyes , my main problem in 3dequalizer is constraints and I cant adjust the orientation if u have a tutorial on that it will be great
Can you explain to me why it is necessary to note the focus distance of lens distortion?
Because focus distance changing affects on lens distortion.
I have two identical cameras (two units) - should I record two sets of lense grids or it's ok to shoot on just one. In theory every sensor has micro differences but does it matter?
Good question! If both of the cameras have the same lens mount then, in theory, 1 is enough. But we will be grateful if you test that theory and send results to us to: solveme@matchmovemachine.com You just need to put 2nd camera at the same place (make sure, that sensor is on the same place compared to 1st camera) and shoot grid in Open Gate mode.
Does the grid on the wall need to be perfectly parallel and square to the camera sensor? How do you achieve that?
Generally no - it can be a slightly unparallel to the camera sensor. But trying to make a Grid perfectly parallel to the camera sensor is a kind of "sharing love and passion" act to the person who will work with this material. Because if you see perfectly fits grid you can not make your own part of the job bad =) For alignment we use laser leveler to set horizon + center line; laser meter to set exact height; phone/laser meter leveler to make sure that camera angle is 0. If we have a lot of lenses and whole day - we use dolly also.

0:23 can i know what software did u use to track this scene? I always mess up when I try to track portrait shots like this in Blender. It's easy to track the scene which has parallax, but this kind of scene is..... I trying to figure out any method.
The most flexible and good resulting software is 3DEqualizer, PFTrack and SynthEyes. For this shot we also used proxy geometry - it helps to get a better tracking.

Awesome stuff! I think for anamorphic lens grid shooting one should also consider if the lens has mounting rotation error due to bad lens mounting, no? (For anamorphic Lens Rotation parameter in 3DE) Otherwise the squares could be skewed left/right. And camera position for anamorphic should remain the same when capturing grids at different focus distance for the lens breathing simulation.
Yes, we don't need to move camera if grid is in focus at different focus distance values - it is very handy, that is why we recommend to close aperture to max value. About anamorphic lens rotation - the industry standard camera and lenses works together very well and it is hard to mount lens badly =)

When doing matchmove, is the proxy environment already available or do you create your own?
It depends. Our regular clients trying to provide proxy geo because they know how it helps to speed it up the whole process. Sometimes we do proxy on our side

@@Ferdimultimedia when you get camera you can create proxy using Nuke's ModelBuilder node, PFTrack has the same function, also it is possible in 3DEq or you can use Maya or any other 3d software
