None of the miners killed over the many years, at many pits should be forgotten, with most of them still underground

A bit of a revision here. The "bulbs" he is talking about are mantles which glow when heated by the burning gas. Lamp lighters do not actually light the lamps instead they maintain them by replacing mantle and rewinding valve clocks. The valve clocks open the gas at set times for the lamp to light. Self Ignition is achieved via a 24/7 running pilot light.
