    The problem you have here is that you've determined that Hebrews is a thematic writing. There is nothing in all of Hebrews that gives that impression. That is an idea cooked up by men. Yes, Hebrews is written to Jewish Christians who are struggling but it is written to address their struggles. So it is a stream-of-consciousness writing, where the author jumps from struggle to struggle. You've determined it is thematic and you've determined the theme is "Jesus is better." Therefore you see everything in the book through that lens. This causes you to misunderstand what the author is saying because you are trying to fit what he says into the box you've chosen. Also, if you check your Bible you will never find the idea of "rest in Jesus" or see Jesus saying, "Rest in me." This too is the teaching of men. You will see Jesus saying, "I will give you rest" but that rest is the same future rest of God that the author of Hebrews is speaking of in these verses. When Jesus says he will give us rest, he isn't talking about a present rest. I see you've conflated rest with peace. They are not the same. We do have a present peace that Jesus has given us, but the rest is still future. He who said, "the fields are white", start the harvest, intended for us to work, "while it is still day", not rest. Here is what the author is saying. Ever since God's rest on the seventh day, that rest has been available. Believers enter into that rest if they have not hardened their hearts toward God. They can enter today. Since every day we are conscious (alive) is today, we can enter into that rest every day, any day that we are alive. God speaks of that rest as "my rest." Many of his chosen people hardened their hearts. About them he said, "they will never enter my rest." If you believe that Joshua fulfilled God's promise of rest, you can see the Psalmist speaking of that promised rest, long after Joshua's time. Therefore that rest is still available and therefore ... The author of Hebrews has spent all this time working up to a point and your thematic thinking (and not understanding Sabbatismos) has caused you to miss it. It would make no sense for the author to say, "and therefore ... you should rest in Jesus." Nothing he has said so far would lead the reader to that idea. If he is addressing the struggles of the Hebrews, what struggle is he addressing? Are they failing to rest in Jesus? How can that be if the "rest in Jesus" is given to all who believe?

      Thank you for your thoughtful response. While it is clear that you have put time and study into the arguments you present, I still disagree with your premise. The Book of Hebrews is not a stream of consciousness writing. There is way too much structure with what I believe is an obvious theme. The Greek writing of this epistle is arguably the most complex in the entire New Testament. And the word "better" appears thirteen times in the epistle. The author is clearly writing with what many commentators believe is a laser focus. He is arguing for the superiority of Christ throughout his letter. The idea of rest has been argued; However, there is a tension between the already and not yet. There is a sense that we in Christ have already entered His rest, but this will not fully be realized until that final day when we see Him face to face. While I can agree with you that the language in Hebrews 4 indicates a future rest, we also have to balance this teaching out with the other Epistles. The sum of the New Testament teaches that there is an already/not yet tension and I believe that this too applies to God's rest. Yes, the Bible doesn't use the phrase "rest in Jesus" specifically, but it also does not use the word "Trinity" either. And yet I strongly believe that it teaches the concept of the Trinity. I'm the same way I believe that the rest in which the author is referring to can only be found by placing our faith in Jesus. This was their problem... They were facing societal pressures to revert back to Judaism, but the writer reminds them that Jesus is better in everyway. Now I realize that I will probably not change your mind, but I do really appreciate this interaction. And I can't thank you enough for your contributions to this comment thread. If you want to expound more on the idea of this writing as a stream of consciousness piece, then please feel free. Thank you .

    Whenever I hear someone speak about legalism, I find they don't have the correct definition. In most cases, they think it means having to do things they don't want to do. I think you have the same confusion. Legalism is not about church rules or man-made rules. It is about the law, which the author of Hebrews and his audience would have understood as the law given by God through Moses. It is also not about having to do things. It is about believing that keeping the law brings salvation. This was the understanding of the religious elite of Jesus' time. Therefore they strictly followed the law and required that of others. However, they were without faith, which is what does bring salvation.

      I hear what you are saying, but I think the application point I made is appropriate. Yes, in context, their issue was that they were tempted to go back to Judaism. And yet the problem in the modern day is not the temptation to reinstitute animal sacrifices, but rather to impose a bunch of man made laws. The tragedy I see today in many Church circles is that there is an over emphasis, at times, on utilizing our traditions over Scripture. I have seen over and over again a bunch of bureaucracy in certain denominations which is unnecessary. In the end, we need to remember that where "the Spirit of that Lord is there is freedom." Thank you for your perspective as it is always good to be challenged. Your contributions to my channel mean a lot to me. God bless you!

    Some verses on this: Romans 4:4 ESV Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. If you work for it, it isn't a gift Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, [9] not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Salvation is a gift (so not worked for) The Galatians who said one must have faith and get circumsised got this response Galatians 5:4 ESV You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. God chose the Israelite and prepared them for the coming of the Messiah. “For you [Israel] are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession” (Deuteronomy 7:6) Similarly, Mary was also chosen and prepared to give birth to the Messiah. Luke 1:46-49 My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. By the way, Mary was the first recorded person in the New Testament to use those words “God my Savior.” The Catholic Church teaches that Mary was in need of salvation but hers came earlier. Why would God not prepare her for such an important role? Everything works according to God’s plan even though it may not make sense to us. For instance, Romans 11:25-26, “I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers, so that you will not become wise in your own estimation: a hardening has come upon Israel in part, until the full number of the Gentiles comes in, and thus ALL ISRAEL WILL BE SAVED ……..” According to this passage, All Israel will be saved. Why does the conversion of all Israel to Christ come later? Why couldn’t it just happen at the time of Christ? Why were they hardened?

    • @timelessdevotionals
      @timelessdevotionals 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for your thoughtful response! Having said that, the Scriptures don't explicitly teach that Mary was sinless. This is something that even the Roman Catholic Church acknowledges. They try and use the two passages I referenced in the video above, but again I think it is a stretch to say that they support the Immaculate Conception. I am not quite sure what you are trying to point out regarding Israel. Please feel free to elaborate a bit more, and I will do my best to respond. The first thing which comes to mind is that Paul laments the spiritual blindness of his Jewish friends and even says that he wishes he could be accursed for the sake of them.

    • @peterw1177
      @peterw1177 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@timelessdevotionals Thanks for your response. In Romans 11 Paul tells us that initially there was a remnant of Jews who were saved at the beginning of Christianity. Paul also says that the full conversion of the Jews was delayed until the full number of Gentiles gets in. After that ALL THE OTHER JEWS WILL BE SAVED. This is the mystery that he describes in Romans 11:25-26. My point here is that if God can delay the conversion of all of Israel to Christianity for the sake of the Gentiles, He can also Save Mary earlier to bring Salvation to all. If I may ask, where did Jesus get his body? If Jesus was given his body by Mary, did the body need to be cleansed of the original sin first before he used it? If that is the case, did Jesus need to be saved first in order for him to save humanity? Or If Jesus did not get his body from Mary and instead received a new body, how can Jesus claim to be human when his body did not come from a human person? Catholics agree with you that the Immaculate Conception is not explicitly shown in Scripture but that doesn't mean that it isn't there. I have one more passage to share. 1 Kings 18:44, “And the seventh time the youth reported, there is a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising from the sea. Elijah said, Go and say to Ahab, Harness up and go down the mountain before the rain stops you.” The small cloud is a type of Mary. It rises from the sea. Similarly, Mary was lifted from the human race. The cloud brings about relief to the Israelites by providing rain. Mary brings about salvation through her son Jesus. I am certain that you know of Schools or Churches named, Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This title of Mary comes from the Old Testament. There is also a Catholic Order called Carmelites. Their order is associated with Elijah. I know that I can't provide a Scripture passage that will convince you but for those who already believe it is easy to see.

    I was raised Catholic… went to catholic school. Once I got saved and started reading and studying my Bible ( we never studied bible as Catholics… go figure ) I became aware the Bible never says to pray to ‘ saints’. We are to pray to God the father . All believers are saints… not just people the Catholic Church says are saints 😂 And praying the rosary… where did that come from. Mary was NOT BORN SINLESS. Mary did not die a Virgin. Mary and Joseph had other children who were half brothers and sisters of Jesus. We should NOT be praying to Mary. The King James Holy Bible is the best Bible to study . God bless you all. Read your Bible !!
