    This showed up randomly in my feed. Many of us know your pain. Even losing an old one who has lived a full life is hard but more bearable. Ten times worse when it's unexpected. Time makes the pain easier to bear, but there's always that hole in your heart from the piece they take with them.

    if your interested in hand tame birds you can try the same techniqueIi do with my pigeons. Just make sure you reserve feed quanitiy so they WANT the feed quite a lot in the mornings; all you have to do from that point on if offer handfulls of food but only from your hands initially (say first 5 mins of choice on the best bits). I probably hand tame 20-50 birds each year as a laugh for my little neice. Note: This works on chickens as well just not broody chickens; one of our buff bantam's (cant remember her exact breed) was named kitty and you could call her in the morning while tapping your shoulder and she would fly up and ride you like a parrot xD man I loved that bird.

      They will take treats from me (soldier worms, etc) but I don't try to handle them too much.

    Never can tell what a pullet is gonna drop. Small to start for sure but they might lay a double of even a triple yoke. Maybe a small egg or may be huge. They get their gears lined up soon enough. Orpingtons are pretty solid layers once they get it together. A broody hen added another dozen to the coop and couple of months ago, was just thinking they'll be laying pretty soon. Haven't even taken a head count on pullets and roosters. Heavy on the pullet side it looks like though.

    • @chumucklafarm
      @chumucklafarm 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Easter Egger has laid several double yolks. The Orpingtons have been very consistent. I guess the heritage breeds are probably a little more predictable than cross hens.

    • @chumucklafarm

      I used plywood for the floor since we were painting it. Regular latex on the inside. I've used that for different animal shelters and never had an issue.

      For what it's worth, on another YT channel, the vet surrounded an open wound with Swat ointment, then coated the entire area with cornstarch. She said cornstarch wouldn't keep air from the wound, but flies won't lay eggs in cornstarch.
