Sound is energy transferring through matter; We are energy transferring through life.
what type of microphone do you need?
Omni or directional? Condenser or dynamic? Another dusk-set video, today we're going over different types of microphones, including transducer type and polar (pickup) patterns. I'll talk about the technical differences, and then the practical applications of the different technologies. especially relating to field recording and production sound.
Thank you for stopping by, please leave a comment if there's something I've overlooked or any questions you may have. Cheers

Dusk hits and we're back with some more field recording exploration. Recorded in November 2023, I go into a deep dive into this compact cardioid stereo recording array I built, as well as some technical talk about sound recording and gear. This is a longer format video, but I'll include chapter markers so you can skip around and click past sections you may not be interested in! Some gear used i...

I was gardening yesterday, trimming back perennials for the winter. I found these large thistle leaves and began to remove them as usual. Perhaps it was the graduation of sharp spines that made me stop and appreciate this common weed for a moment. The leaf has a beautiful geometry with fractal patterns on the edges and the connective structure of the veins along the leaf. The spines at the base...

While this might seem counterintuitive, this mindset can provide excellent clarity on decision making and prioritizing your time. Reflection: I realized that at one point in the video, I said “you have to make a decision”. I do think this is true even though that seems contradictory to the video. We “have to” do things that are inevitable. For example, we must die; although this brings up the q...
Field Recording Basics
มุมมอง 17K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
Welcome, rest here for a bit as we go over field sound recording. This is a budget-oriented video and will work through the basics of capturing beautiful atmospheres. View my website at www.atmospherism.com One major thing I forgot to add in the video, despite my adamant advice of "keep it simple" is that you can start with your smartphone! "Voice Record Pro" on the iOS App Store provides more ...
Thank you. I hope to one day get as knowledgeable as you. My memory is like a sieve, I have to actively do something every day to not forget it
interesting
This kid rocks
i reccomend you to change the name of the video for asmr audio ambience .
Found this by accident and it was very interesting. I like this video and hope to see more soon!
Really interesting, thanks for sharing!! I'm studying at university and I used both ZoomF6 and H4nPro, and I love them both. But to start with the experience of field recording myself I've just bought the h4, as you said, the experience of going out and listen to the world is a very important part of the process :) Keep it up!!
thank you!
Honored to be with ya. Mahalo!
such a helpful video, 60fps video is a tad off-putting though!
…thank you for this very interesting video :)
I m into music , talking , nature recordings and i just ordered tascam x8 Which mic is best for talking and music smooth , please mention mid range one , tascam x8 and shipping already bankrupted me 😂, Looking for reply
I appreciate the sound recording and your advice on starting simply! I'd like to know how far away sounds could be recorded with the omnidirectional mics with low latency mics and what mics are good for quiet night atmospheric ambient sounds how costly they are? What device you used in this demo to control sounds? Is it possible to capture enhanced transportation sounds sitting on the same place with nearby sounds immersing in louder sounds like while the transports are going away from near to far?
My first field recording setup used to be a cheapo Stereo Cassette recorder with Microphone Input. Then i jumped to a portable reel to reel for better audioquality due to the faster tape speed. Then i switched to a better cassette recorder that was higher quality and that was pretty good. Then i obtained a second hand MiniDisc walkman from 1999 and a little stereo mic (a Thomann t.Bone ST40) and i made the best freaking field redordings with that simple rig. it was small, lightweight and i had a sound that was insanely good. Even if it wasn't lossless, the DAC of the little Sony Minidisc walkman sounded incredible. And the whole rig didn't cost me more than 50 maybe 60 bucks (including the blank MDs). The only downside was i had to record all my recordings to my PC again through the Soundcard, because i had no way to dump the ATRAC audio digitally from my MD. But i was still very happy with the results i got from it. After that i went with a Zoom H2 (the original silver "electric shaver" model) but hated its super noisy Mic Input. So i only used the internal mics which i still loved because it let me chose the Stereo width and of course i did a few 4.0 Recordings as well. Something you cannot do with the majority of digital compact audio recorders, except the Zoom H2n.
I don't like the boominess of voice through a shotgun mic. I much prefer the voice as it was picked up by the omnis and cardiods. The tradeoff is, of course, those mics don't reject background sound. But the boominess seems to be a property of the phase cancelling properties of shotguns. I guess there's no getting around a silent studio room.
The MKE 600 shotgun I used here is in the mid range as far as microphones go, I definitely have to EQ the sound coming from it, and it's not my first choice for recording voice. Do you still find this boomineess in the top level pro shotguns too like Schoeps? I agree a treated studio offers the best opportunity to use a wide range of mics but that's not really applicable in field recording or location sound
I appreciate what you have created. I have 3d printed heaps of custom mounts and similar way to make good recording more cheaply, including 180mm diameter blimp. Love my F3. Good job.
that's awesome. I definitely feel like 3d printing opens up a whole new world of custom application
Love your relaxed style to presenting. Just starting out and would love to record rain. Any budget friendly setup suggestions please?
@@JayGillUK Thank you! For budget friendly rain recording, an inexpensive recorder under a tarp or umbrella covered with foam batting or “hogs hair” filter material to dampen the rain drops hitting the tarp.
Generous and thoughtful sharing of knowledge, without trying to sell a product. TH-cam at its best. You rock Alex!
What are the mics? Behringer C-2? How satisfied are you with those?
Correct. Not the best mics I’ve used, they’re a bit noisy for quiet field recording applications. But considering the price (I think I got the pair for $60), they’re a great value.
As a hobby folly-ist, this is really interesting (and possibly the next step); my question to you is: what do you do with these recordings? Just enjoy them yourself?
@@RudeCanine good question. I name them all and store them on an external hard drive and use them when I’m sound designing films.
Alex, I’m a Vermont-based sound recordist; I write books about field recording and teach workshops, and I want to complement you on your program. Very well done, nice delivery, and let me also say that the last thing you said in this first video is important and compelling: that field recording is a great way to get out and experience the world around us. Nice work, sir. Keep them coming.
Hey Alex, where is your next video or sound? Please go on...
@@Calm2Ease hey been quite busy with work and life, haven’t had the free time to work on YT vids, but I do love sharing this with yall!! If you wanna see what I’ve been up to, I’ve been working a lot w Empress Visuals, check us out on ig instagram.com/empress_visuals_?igsh=OHU2aTA2YWpnbTdl
great informative video. very helpful and well formated. :)
Thank you for putting this together! I'm trying to find just the right mic's for whale recording for an Alaska trip and thunderstorm/weather/nature recording for home (Phoenix). This was super helpful and put together in such a human relatable/personable format! Appreciate your efforts!
What kind of headphones did you use in this video?
Thank you for sharing your experties. I got really inspired about high quality fieldrecording from your demonstration. I will absolute some day get an Zoom recorder for the two stereo channel capturing. I am more of an photo/film camera guy, I have an Röde shootgun external mic for my dslr camera, but I have noticed lately that sound-design is great impact and have heavy importans for the whole experience despite in production of videogame, movies or listening to an audio ebook. Thank you!❤🙏😁 Keep up the great work. You are so talented and genuine.
Nice video. It's really clear you have a passion for this craft.
This dope

Useful video, thanks!
Great first video! Thanks for sharing. I would be interested in content covering picking a decent set of headphones.
Really nice video! Subscribed!
Thank you for this video! Like it 🙂
Very understandable. Like it. As well as all others: nice video pciture and descent speaking. Thank you! 🙂
That's really cool. I'm not into this sort of audio, I like music recording and bird recording, but the way you explain the different kinds of mics with the examples is great! Also that is the perfect asmr rig tbh
Thank you! Go on with it, please.
Thanks for sharing info of your stuff, i've got a similar set up, zoom f3 + rode m5, i'm new on field recording and still trying to develope a kind of diy rig, here in Argentina every single stuff is stupidly expensive on these days, so i have to calculate which bars and screws and grips would be proper and functional... Greetings and keep on creating!!!
Thank you for the explanations and detailed description. Nice Stereo effect!
I lioke your explanations; please report next time, before or after, about your techniques and equipment
It could be one of the relaxing rain videos 🙂
Thank you verty much for it from Germany. I liked the way you explained it while practice it al lot!!! That makes decisions ... perfect!
Hi Alex, thanks for the great video! Can I actually ask you the reference for your eq. case ? It seems solid and useful ! Thx
Sure it’s an Apache 3800 case from harbor freight and then the trekpack divider kit is for the pelican iM2200 and the lid organizer is Harrison brand for pelican 1450
@@atmospherism Thanks so much!
Dope video, love the sounds of the insects. I do a little field recording here in Los Angeles, but it's always SO NOISEY. I've almost resorted to just capturing the sounds of cars and traffic and cityscapes. I want to do more nature, but that requires a good drive to get out of the city.
@@thepodcasthaven yeah it’s tough in urban environments even with directional mics, the sounds of man are pretty omnidirectional
A budding sound mixer here. I just found your channel and I love it.
@@IrorogheneOdafejirorosua thanks, hope you have fun!
excellent video, thanks for sharing. In the recorder configuration do you use the panned channels L - R or do you keep them in the center?
Good video. Good information. I love to go out back and record our woods. I too started with a small recorder and built-in mics. Since I already do music recording I upgraded to a 4 input interface plugged into my tablet and using mics from the studio. A friend of mine even recommended making a CD with the intro to each song being nature (mostly birds) for each. So it gave it a fun twist
excellent keeep going on field recording videos
Thanks for sharing!! I find out field recording and ambient noise interesting and great for my art installation project. The tascam and zoom recorder isn't a cheap one in my country, but for start i would use sony or even my phone to record, maybe i will buy an omnidirectional mic for better result. Thanks
Thank you for making this.
You are so gosh darn adorable I can’t
