How hard is it to Cut Off Your Gas?

Well we just went fully electric in Calgary, AB where design temperature is -26C. About 2200 sq ft (between upstairs/downstairs) bi-level. Heat load was about 27k Btu/hr. I recommend getting an energy audit and a heat load/manual j to help figure out what you need to do the same. We did it with a cold climate heat pump, hybrid heat pump water heater, and a heat pump dryer/washer combo.
There are 32 450 watt Long Panels with 16 APSystems DS3-L Micrinverters for a total 14.4 kW of DC power. This system is forecasted to generate about 16 MWh a year in electricity. We will use more electricity in the winter than we generate and in the summer we will generate more electricity than we use. The system is designed to be 100% annual offset. The credits received in summer will be used to pay the additional costs in the winter. This system starts feeding the grid in a few days.
I worked in Energy Trading for over two decades, the world is going electric, and gas may have a short term purpose during the coldest months to make power and as it phases out of use in home heating. It was kind of like the time we all used to talk about coal/gas switching at work, because gas was getting cheaper than coal. Now it’s about renewables and batteries getting cheaper, and a little bit of gas in the winter. It will take a while yet, but this is just the beginning!

2nd or 3rd gear not 1st
I only have one gear 😂
Until the battery goes flat.
Yes in 15 years
I just got stuck this morning in a M3 rwd in Ramsay, Calgary there’s only hills here and boy it was bad haha
Winter tires?
@ yes! We manage to back the car and and then make the car turn the other way and down the hill just on spiller road se and then we finally tried another hill and made it to the top and from there is all downhill to our place … I got stuck while going uphill and trying to turn right and keep going uphill the street has this inclination because it’s right on a turn to get to the alley to the garage ugh
😬 yes, maybe a little easier with AWD. Or studded tires maybe would work better in winter for you?
I have electrified and I have one 4 ton heat pump, heat pump water heater, solar and an Emporia Vue2. I looked back at the coldest days we had, in January 24. Emporia only keeps the data every 15 minutes, but the worst reading I have was pulling 51 amps from the grid. It got down to -29C in that period, and snowed so the solar was covered. So you probably will be fine. Panel condition, age, capacity and code may mean upgrading the panel.
Load management device switching to a V Electric Power VEC that manages two channels. Really only to pass electrical code for permit. Was joking with my wife about how much we would have to have running to even trigger the load manager. We used to do it on the regular with the DCC-12 connected to the EVSE’s and clothes dryer and oven running.
For me it was call, they said sure. Call back after the next bill, they said it was illegal. Contacted the public utilities commission. Got contacted by the utility rep, and just a few months later, they did it and refunded the extra charges. Super easy and fun. Two other people had similar stories.
Still waiting here, said it would be done last week, looks like I will be calling again!
Our local utility has fixed charges of about $55 per month just for having gas, even with zero usage. So nearly $7000 over a decade in fixed base costs. Far better to replace gas appliances with electric and completely decommission gas service from the utility.
Great idea, the sooner the better I say. Let the utility figure out how to decarbonize, while every one gets electrified and more efficient too. Did not make sense to me to get another gas furnace, but I’m an early adopter. Hopefully I can show others another possibility.
I'm an EE and wound up with about 200kwh of long life (30+ years) lifepo batteries so I went solar, heat pump etc. my 1970 furnace was doa anyway. Modern solar panels are amazing, I have way more power than I need so I bought an Electric car. I'm %100 energy independent. The soar panels were so cheap they paid for themselves in a little over a year.
That’s awesome 👏
You really are naive. You will be sorry for such a decision. NATURAL gas is the most efficient clean burning fuel there is.
We don’t need to burn fuel to make heat
@@RockyMountainTesla Natural gas is also the best form of fuel for cooking and water heating. Trust me you are making a mistake.
Trust me, I’m not
You are gonna regret that if you ever decide to go back to NG. You are looking at 20 to 30 k minimum to get hooked back up. Plus if you ever sell your property? Who would buy a house with no NG?
Never going back. Not removing the underground pipes, so it would be less. On a major rebuild where they remove everything it would be though. This is the home where we are going to age in place. I wouldn’t recommend doing this if someone were only planning a short term ownership. Its payback I estimate is at least 10 years. You wouldn’t believe how many people are cutting off gas, EVERYWHERE!
So much of my gas bill is fees its starting to seem easier to just eat the extra electrical costs for heat and hot water. That sounds stupid given that my power is coming from a NG plant but that's how outrageous the ratio of charges unrelated to usage have become. I just can't stomach the idea of mothballing a functioning hot water tank, furnace and oven.
@Hierax415 ours were end of life, actually even past that. Over time this will become an easier choice. Something to consider in the future. I’ll try to keep sharing the results of our journey especially after I actually have year over year usage. I wouldn’t sweat the few hours where the grid needs extra NG to make electricity considering the grid will be more green every year…
Interesting how it will do in the very cold
It will be very interesting to see how it performs in the deep freeze! Power monitoring will be up and running next week too, all I can say now is we are warm inside.
Hi . How much it cost to install the DCC12 unit in Alberta?. Which company you recommend for doing this job. Thanks
👋, Gravity Electrical solutions did the installation for $1,300, but they did a bunch of other work on top of that price, $5k for a bunch of rewiring including the DCC. Their link is in the description. I’m getting another company to install another product that is dual channel because they do work with Level Up Solar (Voltiva) and they are also doing good work here on our project. I will likely be able to sell this DCC-12 for a small discount because it won’t meet our future needs. We need a system that can manage the EVSE power and the Electric Heat Strip power.
Cover the copper
The project is still in final stage of completion, it’s about to get final dressings. Everything will be perfect 👍
The test shouldn't be only uphill, but on turns on ice and on turns on snowy conditions while passing on a highway, and you're accelerating.
Thanks for the idea, but we are deep into electrifying our home in Calgary, Alberta. No more gas soon!
Good to know I have the same rwd also red as well!
It’s the best colour, for us at least 😎
It's been years, and I'm still laughing whenever watching this video, good job, guys.
Thanks 🙏 I still get a kick out of it watching it too 😂
Had some old bitty walk up to me with tears in her eyes," there are children here." I look around again seeing no children. Well I smiled and said, "don't worry, I wont hurt any children."
It warrants being careful, but if people only knew how much FSD was actually driving. Look ma, no hands, as long as we are paying attention of course
Love it! It is the future or car driving.
Seems more and more likely!
Yep! There are people who don't like new tech. Maybe they will understand if its an emergency or heavy rain at the parking lot. I think there are special case scenario that ASS will be justified by those who think its rekless. Like there is this guy who used smart summon to get his tesla out from a closed parking lot. Hi car was parked so far at the parking lot. He managed to bring his car at the entrance and was allowed by the guards.
That would a definite situation where someone who is against the use of it would use it!
You covered it all. Most people will always reject what they don’t understand and tbh a LOT of people are ignorant to today’s technology and its abilities.
Thanks 🙏
What a miseable person. What is he making that judgement based on?
An uninformed opinion, it’s to be expected at this time.
Always based on ignorance unfortunately.
The car has no way of telling if something is right infront of the bumper thanks to Elon who thought it would be a great idea to go withot a front bumper camera, radar or sensors! "Dirty Tesla" testet ASS and if the car can't reverse far enough for the windshield camera to see, because for example parked back to a wall or another car, it's game over! In his case it was just a box, but i could have been a child and the car would have run it over with no mercy! That's the reason they changed it from real FSD to Supervised! It can't be used without supervision and so can't be FSD ever be without human supervision for now. I can see lawsuits coming to demand a free instalment of a bumper camera as peiole have paid up to 14.000$ for FSD. FSD means *Full Self Driving* and not " sorry you eill have to watch your car at any time" !
I think so as well. Very cool how far they have come, but I seriously think fully autonomous vehicles from Tesla will need to be new hardware.
@@RockyMountainTesla Yeah don't get me wrong, it's the most impressive assistance driving system out there! No question about it!
It is pretty amazing. It blows people’s minds when they experience it for the first time. It’s just not an autonomous vehicle. I’m 5 years in, what about 5 years from now, that’s the question.
It’s worth pointing out that a human driver would have also not been able to see the box in Dirty Teslas test. Most drivers do not do a full walk around of their vehicle every time they get in. FSD doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to be better than humans.
@@edinalewis4704 Well that's what's it all about! A human driver would have at least been there to check first right? I don't just drive off without having a look around mly car do you? As soon as i approach it i immediately see if there is something infront or behind the car. I don't know about the US but in Europe this for 100% sure will not be allowed until the car can cover all possible blind spots but then we are talking of a nation which is about to vote a high profile criminal as President and the CEO of Tesla supporting that, so I guess at least in the US everything is possible! It's sad what has happened to Elon Musk, a guy I once admired!
A good deal of people are afraid of anything new, why when 5G came out people burned the cell towers. When 6G comes out they will be burning them again. This is exactly the same, but this will eventually hurt someone in probably some small way. It's the price of progress, but without some risk we would be stuck living like it's 1800s, like the Mennonite colonies thinking life could not be better. I think it's a great step for future applications beyond just driving on parking lots. This will make life better, but there will be growing pains. Over legislate and progress can stop while it will continue elsewhere in the world and will be stuck behind. I tired Model Y test drive overnight with FSD and think it's not full self driving but amazing and useful already. Many drives were done without intervention. Will get Model Y after the new year.
Well said, at least all it takes to stop the car is removing your finger from the screen, and if I truly thought there was any danger I would have acted. Love our Model Y, but no FSD on it.
❤
🙏
I wish we could have smart summon without spending $8K for FSD. But, we can rent FSD for $99 a month for a road trip and get smart summon included.
It’s a bit expensive to buy outright, I bought 5 years ago with the car.
Check out my friend’s video in Costco parking lot😅 x.com/coldenvy/status/1839488539526123603
Car literally avoided another car cutting it off, and multiple people walking around it... buddy walks out not seeing any of that and immediately says "that's dangerous". Classic!
His response didn’t surprise me, but the car literally drives me everywhere with minimal interventions these days. That’s the thing, I know how well it’s performing, but others don’t, so they judge 🤷♂️.
That's a common reaction with anything new. I let someone test drive my Model Y, and their immediate reaction to the regen braking was, "Oh my god! That's dangerous!!"
I almost said you should experience it before you say anything about it…
Do COSTCO
We shall see, have to finish our home electrification project and videos first. Maybe it will be good enough by then to feel comfortable using Actual Smart Summon in such a busy parking lot.
was this with studded tires or non studded?
Non studded!
Ryan, we are so excited to work with you!! We are ready for the future.
Thanks Asif, me too!
You are already spending 40K+ on this project; wouldn't it just be easier to also upgrade your service to 200A? I didn't install the 200A service because that + the 60A(48A) circuit for the wall charger was going to be $7500 which I thought was just too much. Considering your overall plan installing that service is fairly minor.
I want to do something that is more sustainable. I have heard numbers like another $10k, and don’t even know if 200 amps would be possible. I know that an entire neighborhood could not upgrade to 200 amp service without a crazy amount of upgrades. I’ll try to show a way that is possible for everybody in a 100 amp service neighborhood.
@@RockyMountainTesla I thought $7500 was way too much until I met someone that was quoted 15K and now you're saying 10K. That price of this stuff seems to vary a lot.
@lashlarue59 These were just rough estimates, but our electrical utility box is between our neighbour and our property. Closer is cheaper. But again I want to show there are easier ways, at least more efficient ways.
@@RockyMountainTesla One more thing. With your solar plans are you considering batteries also? Reason I ask is have you thought about bi-directional charging? The current Teslas don't support it except for the Cybertruck but lots of other EV's do it and I was thinking about using the car as an option for battery back up of solar. I'm not an electrician but batteries like the Tesla Powerwalls are 7-8 KWh while the battery in a model Y is 75 KWh thats 10X difference, there would be some loss but that might be an option. ...then are those 106 KWh Fisker batteries floating around 😁
The load shedding tip in the video with an emporia energy monitor is great information that would avoid a costly upgrade to a 200A panel. I have heard of a 25A bus bar added to a 100A panel for more flexibility as well.
I think you mean a 225 amp bus bar, yes that will be necessary for the solar installation coming up actually. More details to come in upcoming videos.
@@RockyMountainTesla Yes, forgive me that was meant to be a 125 but indeed they do come with different ratings. A cost effective way to max out a 100A panel.
@ecotech-training going even higher to 225 amp bus bar because of the solar. More information in an upcoming video.
They own 2 teslas and can’t upgrade the panel??
I want to show that it’s possible without major panel upgrades. It’s not always possible.
@@RockyMountainTesla I'm sharing a 30A(24A) clothes dryer circuit between two EV's using a high voltage switch box. Total cost between the switch box, proper gauged cables and charger was around $700. The only downside is you can't charge both cars at the same time so it's very doable.
@lashlarue59 that’s another great way to share power. We are not going to have a dryer outlet shortly 😎. Future video topic. But we did do something like this at my mother in law’s.
I was in the same boat with a hundred amp panel , however I had one thing that was making charging more difficult. No grounding! My house was built in 1959 before grounding was code. I ended up having a 200 amp panel installed on my meter with grounding and that panel contains the 40 amp breaker to my Tesla wall charger. That's plenty fast enough for me.
That’s great when people can upgrade their panel. I’m trying to show how it can be done without too much extra spending. Our solution isn’t free, but all in all money can be saved even with major upgrades. And we are only just getting started.
I would just scheduled charging at different times. You can do that in the car or on the app. Charge at night split 4 hours each. Problem solved! But this might be a good alternative for people who have an irregular sleep or work schedule. When you have a Tesla, you have options.
True, but in residential neighborhoods we have to pass inspections before any major electrical work is done. Safety first as Tesla would say.
Could you show us how you configured each UWC for power sharing? Are they networked together via WiFi, Bluetooth, or power line?
Instructions are in the Group Power Management section, looks like it’s been updated since I configured it. www.tesla.com/en_CA/support/charging/wall-connector/power-management
Smart charging. Nice tech!
Thanks! It’s been working great for almost a year now.
Have always pondered this exact question. Now I know! To see the Tesla go uphill without trouble was really something else. A fantastic video and dialogue!
Thanks, it was a fun video to make too!
coming to stop bad idea. wouldn't do that even on awd
It was a test, so normally would agree!
This video only showed us the importance of good winter tires
And an electric vehicle’s ability to spin the wheels in a very controlled fashion.
@@RockyMountainTesla , probably, you are right. The simplicity of the construction, that you don't have several layers of aggregates between the engine and wheels. My country is not ready for full electric cars :(
Where are you from, electric vehicles will be everywhere in 10-20 years.
@@RockyMountainTesla Eastern Europe
Cheaper EV’s from Chinese companies like BYD, or Xpeng and others will soon be cheaper than internal combustion engine vehicles. It won’t be overnight, but it’s starting to happen everywhere.
really appreciated your video. Im thinking to get a model 3 LR. but what you think in deep snow since i m in Calgary too. also if i leave my car for ten hours outside when it is -30c or colder, would it be a problem ???
Sorry I didn’t get back to you earlier. Winter tires make a big difference. A Long Range is AWD, so better in deeper snow, but clearance is king, and a Model Y AWD will always do better in deeper snow. I don’t really worry too much about cold weather driving at -30, and our garage is about -15c. I always warm it up before driving though.
Thank you, I never have a car yet and plan to buy model 3, and in my place have winter and summer so I afraid of rwd, and I think I have to buy awd-longrange which will cost higher for Winter. But after you video I will choose rwd as I need to save money.
btw in my country the model 3 rwd goes with All season tires, is it good for Winter or I have to change Winter tires?
Glad it helped!
Sold buying the new LR 24/3 because this ....Best deal of the century dropped today by teala, no need for 4whl in the NorthEast.
Unfortunately not available in Canada… would do just fine here too with winter tires
All season tires on the Tesla ?
Winter tires, details in description.
Parked in the shade helps
And windshield sun shade does wonders too!
I need one
I had the same struggle until I realized I could get 50 km of range in 12 hours on a 120 volt outlet conveniently positioned next to my parking spot. I also realized the charging curve for a level 1 outlet is flat so the energy delivered is a simple function of time. This was the beginning of the story of EVnSteven the app. Once upon a time, there was a trustworthy and proud new EV owner named Jake and a friendly property manager named Susan. Jake wanted to trickle-charge his EV using the common area electrical outlet next to his parking stall. However, Susan didn't have the budget to pay for the cost of installing a metered charging station. Wanting to help Jake, Susan suggested they install EVnSteven. Thanks to this one simple app, they both lived happily ever after 💚💚 Visit my channel for more information. Hugs and kisses.
🇬🇧 we say ‘give it some beans’
Good one!
i think they laid off the whole supercharger team because they are giving the whole supercharger side of business to BP to manage. They make very small margin on Supercharger and they will most likely want to focus on FSD as they also need to recalibrate now using Nvidia LLMs.
Interesting theory, although they did mention investing another $500 Million into the Supercharger Network. Seemed like an emotional response to fire the whole team.
You're off to a really bad start. If you have FSD V12.3.6 it is no longer a beta release. It is now a public "Supervised" release properly referred to as "FSD V12.3.6 (Supervised)". Like any software, it is a work in progress and will continue to change over time, mostly for the better. The "Supervised" aspect is important to note so everybody knows going in that it isn't autonomous, it may from time to time need for the supervisor to interact. I have V12.3.6 and while I don't trust it on parking lots, overall it is good enough that I have to remind myself to keep paying attention.
Thanks for the reminder, I have been saying FSD Beta for a while. My favourite part of the drive was seeing FSD handle the accident nearly blocking off the route near the end.
I don’t think so. My FSD is terrible and really unsafe. Completely different from Waymo which has already solved this problem
I’ve taken 50 or so rides in Waymo and it drives naturally like a person and has never once made a mistake that I’ve seen
What version have you tested? V12 is A LOT better than V11.
