    Hahha yeahs mines died… one of my baby chicks (faith) had splat leg as a chick and took tiny steps to move. She had a bandaid but she had the Disease splat leg. She got sick and her best friend also got splat leg. Later, we realized another chick got sick and we lost 3 and the 4th that got sick had small mental problems when it got older but sadly got killed by a raccoon

      @@thechildsfamilyexperience we couldn’t treat it we only had her for like an hour after she got shipped (huge regret shipping) and she died inside a food bowl and her best friend who always was with her died as well. And then a gray one caught it. Not much we could have done sadly..

    Trying this with a turkey poult, its only a day old, has plenty of energy even if its wobbling. Doesn't have awful splayed legs, just a mild version where he cant stand well and his leg sticks out a little. With this and the cup method, he's moving around much more and I caught him standing up on his own! He's eating, drinking and pooping regularly and has plenty of energy. Very confident this chick will make it through.

      They should be able to get use to walking a little with the bandaid on but if they can't try dipping it's beak in water or syringe feeding it electrolytes. Some people put them in a cup to keep them upright and hand feed them until they can get around on their own. Good luck!

    I'm having a hard time with my special little chick. I've had them for over a week & she's been walking fine. Then yesterday she looked like she injured her right leg, I'm thinking she got it caught in a rack.... but she was still hobbling with the left leg, in between her sitting on her haunches on her right leg. I thought it might be a sprain & would improve with trying to walk. Wrong! I woke up this AM & was devastated up find that her strong left leg was split ALL the way behind her & her right leg was split all the way forward 🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭. I'm feeding her, but am scared she's going to die 🥺🥺🥺. I don't understand how she's been fine for a week & now this.

    Make sure you add mosquito dunks in the rain barrels. You only need half a "dunk" per barrel every month. They float, so they won't get to the chickens and it will prevent mosquitos from using the water to make more skeeters.

    We are using vet wrap. Our RI Red had one splayed leg and curled toes on that leg so both had to be addressed. I used a small cardboard from notebook and shaped as small as I could in a teardrop shape to fit toes. Used clear vented medical tape just enough to go over toes on top to keep them straight and to stick to cardboard and then very tiny narrow strips to go around and secure. The lighter the better. The vet wrap I cut less than a 1/4” wide and just enough to encircle both legs below knee and loose on leg and pinched in middle. It was quite easy and will not stick to feathers. We haven’t had chicks for years and never had this problem. I didn’t have vet wrap and my husband fashioned a hobble from a fuzzy pipe cleaner and made sure no pokey ends stuck out. It worked but it’s cumbersome and wouldn’t advise, but it worked for the day until vet wrap. It was So easy to get on this tiny chick and I’m sure she appreciated the comfort. I didn’t make her Sandler for toes right away and wish I had because as I attached the cardboard and toes were straight the chick seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. She does have difficulty with the other toe sometimes barely catching sandal, but I’m hopeful this will be a brief rehab. I separated her as there would not be much rest with other chicks and it would be undue stress. She chirps normally during day and I have a little night light at night so she can see food and water with a temperature controlled seedling heat mat under box. Every hour or so I lift her over to water and food to make sure she keeps strength up and hydrated for sure. And she enjoys classical music and a Spring Peepers CD 😂 I’m just very happy she is drinking and eating and I do use probiotics and electrolyte/vitamins in water. I scrambled a bit of egg and in very tiny pieces to add protein and other nutrients to build muscle. At this young age they use a lot of energy to grow feathers and bones. When I changed hobble today it appeared the legs were staying closer together, but because I was still figuring out how to make a prosthetic for the toes I think I delayed the correction a bit because no weight can be put on curled toes. This is day 3. So 2 days with pipe cleaner hobble, but the toes needed to be addressed because she couldn’t apply pressure. Don’t know what happened in her travel to the store, but it’s been a ruff start for the lil tyke. So if you have a tiny bird as this try and keep the surface flat with paper towel. I don’t know if rubber shelf liner would help or hinder. And use glass stones in water to prevent drowning if they tip over as all those prosthetics even though I made them as light as possible are still a lot of hardware for them to maneuver.

    Hello, thanks for the video as it will help many bird owners to fix their birds legs. I have a dove which was born 5 days ago. Today i realized its right leg is slightly going to the side and i found out its called splayed legs after searching online. I have just one question : Is it enough if i reshape the nest so it supports baby to sit in the right position with its legs are as they supposed to? I did it an hour ago and so far its sitting all good there, both legs in the right position. I am all by myself and i am just afraid of hurting the baby while doing bandaids or other solutions. Is this ok as long as the legs stay in the right position, what do you think? Thanks in advance.

    • @thechildsfamilyexperience
      @thechildsfamilyexperience ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man, I honestly have no idea. Chickens don't really "fly" like doves do, so I'm not sure it's as detrimental for it's legs to be straight but if it's a pet dove maybe try the bandaid. Sorry, I know that probably wasn't much help 🙃

    • @tylerdurden7020
      @tylerdurden7020 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thechildsfamilyexperience Thank you very much for the reply. I found “splayed leg bracelets” on amazon. I ordered a few with different sizes and will try once it arrives. Reshaping the nest helped alot btw. Now it supports the baby dove much more to sit in the right position. I can really tell the difference just in 24 hrs when i put the baby out of the nest. I also started to give crashed sesame seed along with bird formula to support calcium intake. Also putting the nest close to the sunlight during daytime, so it can create enough vitamin d. Those seems to help alot in a very short time. Gonna use the bracelets too once they arrive, but kinda think baby dove will not need them 😊

    Great job! I'm getting 7 hens in July and want to do something similar to what you did. However, I want to make some small adjustments: 1. I will add an insulated box for the water and add a small heater that turns on at 32F and turns off at 34F so that the water never freezes. 2. I'm going to make my nesting box such that the eggs roll away and the birds can't eat them nor poop on them But in the end, I'll be doing something very similar to what you did. Great job!
