I worked for Swissair at Geneva Cointrin airport from 1987 to 1996 as a mechanic. Cointrin had plane spotters from all over Europe. It was hugely popular for the sheer variety of aircraft. If you liked Russian aircraft, there were Tupolev 134's from LOT, Aeroflot 152's, Ilushin 64's from Cuba, Il 76's cargo planes from Iraq and many others I can't remember now. King Hussein of Jordan would fly in on occasion in his private Lockheed 1011 which he piloted. The Saudi royal family would land in their luxury Boeing 747-SP. Robert Mugabe had a DC-9/51. Then of course there was Swissair with its eclectic fleet. MEA came in from Beirut regularly with one of the last Boeing 720's still in commercial use. I was on that plane many times for turnaround checks. It still had a navigator's dome behind the cockpit. SAA flew in once a week with the 747 SP. Air India with old Jumbo jets. CTA, a Swiss feeder airline had the last of the Caravelles. BA used the tremendously noisy BAC 111's until about 1989 around there. President Bush flew in just before the 1st Gulf War. That was something. First a C5 Galaxy landed and unloaded the presidential limousine, and a special helicopter and other vehicles for the secret service. A day later Air Force 1 came in. The Swiss army guarded the plane with armored vehicles and machine guns. Is Geneva Cointrin still loved by plane spotters? No doubt it is but I don't believe there are as many rare aircraft and variety as there were 35 years ago.
