9:00 Tom's Modelworks has a generic IJN Destroyer PE set (Number 2004) that includes the "spider web" funnel grates you speak of, plus railings, radar, etc. For inspiration, there's an ongoing build of the 1/200 Hatsuzuki on Kit Maker Forums but it looks like you have already seen it. The builder is named "TimReynaga"

What kind of white filler putty have you used here?

If the molds still exist for this giant model, Nichimo should re-release it with a PE kit and some minor updates and price it under the current Trumpeter Yamato.

11:15 The molded-on deck details, especially the "diamond plate" molded into the forecastle and the amidships deck area is basically scale. Each diagonal "diamond" segment is probably about 304mm long in 1:1 scale. Check postwar photos of IJN Yukikaze (Kagerou Class). The transverse strips evenly spaced along the main deck were there to hold down the brown linoleum deck covering and were made of brass, about 30mm in width. Again, pretty accurate placement in 1:200.

5:30 Not R/C, just a simple motorized model which were all the rage back in those days. R/C components were not miniaturized to the extent they are today, so R/C conversion was probably nearly impossible in 1974 at least in regards to a fully operational model that had a realistic freeboard and didn't sink itself on its maiden voyage. However, they are easily converted to R/C in the current era. 5:50 "bland" detail-wise; I agree but you are judging a 1970s kit with a modern eye, but at the time this kit was released it was on par with 1970's Tamiya quality--which isn't saying much.

These are GREAT kits in my estimation, if you wanted to build IJN destroyers in large scale. They were for many years "the only game in town", and might still be so unless there's some kits available now with the advent of 3D printing or outfits like Trumpeter/Monochrome/Gallery.

I built this model several decades ago…and also made it into r/c..and also gave it a radar rotation and smoke from the stacks..I can agree that it was pretty basic compared to what we can buy now..but it was the best at the time.i still have mine now..and granted it is very basic..but even then it was hard to come by..and would not care to sell it now…we all learn a lot through time..but know all the hours put in…and it was a lot of fun…

I bought this kit back in the early 80s, the production technology for the scale simply wasn't there at the time.

I have the Nichimo kit. There are a few flaws. 1. the deck and the stern area do not fit properly. 2. The 46cm turrets that come with the kit are too narrow. both starboard and portside the panel that should fit the stern 3. both panels that are supposed to fit the portside and starboard portions of the stern do not fit properly. There are 2 youtube videos that provide helpful tips . 1. Ebroins minatures and Amegraphy. They used box sealing tape to properly secure the deck to the hull. Fujimi has a after market kit for the turrets. When securing the panels to the stern they used epoxy and liquid putty. The hull also has mold lines which requires sanding and quite a bit of it.
