We've bid farewell to our conventional jobs to breathe new life into a century-old house. Follow along as we document every step of our renovation, revealing the raw reality of transforming a historic abode with just one builder, two childminders, and a teacher.

08:05 you filming from the top floor of the big place?
@@AshleySteel oui oui, left the camera in the loft.
Which department are you in- it usually looks good weather?😀
@@pamkelly859 we are on the Charante Dordogne boarder. The weather isn't always great! But we went through the rainy months last year and wanted to be prepared this time around!
Happy New Year to you all, best wishes for the the year ahead. Do the tarps stay on under the tiles instead of roofing felt or is it just a temp thing to get through winter?
@@scottsorby7966 Happy new year! The tarp is just a temp thing to get the barn and garage through the winter. Last year we had over 40 days of rain and we spent a lot of time trying to patch random sections. Tiles had also started to come loose and didn't fancy taking one of them to the head walking past!
Meilleurs vœux la team
@@christineprevost2973 Merci!
Subb just for the name of the channel. 😂 I said that countless times.
What an intro.... It was like Amanda and Mick are wanting a long lie in,, lets wake them up by throwing scaffold poles 😂😂😂😂
Fuck me.... I can't imagine how you folks felt as more and more of that wall came away but I was feeling pretty sick to my stomach watching it but I suppose it needs dug out and rebuilt for your safety. It's great to see that even after all that you still managed to mess around and get a laugh in between Mick's strops 😉🤣🤣
Good point, also the plans for this building
Scary!!!
Hats off to you guys😀
@@pamkelly859 we will see what we can do. Thanks for the feedback!
I wish you guys would describe to us what you are doing and why,
I wish we all knew what we were doing and why! But we will try and address this going forward! Thanks for the feedback
What's the pipe for?
@@AshleySteel thought it would be best to be able to feed electrics or water through in the future.
Lots of progress in this one! Productive week! A new direction in content from 22:30
@@AshleySteel we would need to start a new channel for that content. Please watch this space for only fans.
@IfIHadADiggerAFrenchRenovation If I Had Only A Bath
For future reference: use more lime, don't overwork it until dry(er) and/ most importantly don't try too much in one go. Multiple thinner layers will get you further. Keep smiling!
@@MickeysMice many thanks! We will be working on thinner layers next time! Hopefully. The smiles will remain!
The pigeon was my favourite part!
UG! 11 minutes of the same terrible music. I like these kind of vids but if this music is common I'm going to have to skip.
@@techmarine83 I'm afraid the music is royalty free, this video was just a recap of our first year in France so the music is a little more dominant. In our following 30+ videos we document things a little more closely so the music is only there when there is no talking, or if we have had to speed up footage. Honestly sometimes the music is better than the sound of the drum mixer or hammer drill! Thanks for the feedback!
Renovation isn’t always new and exciting- often you have to do the hard slog- we appreciate that😀
Haha thanks! This isn't the last of the underpinning you will see!
Fuxakes what an into,,, you good folks have some major sized rock eating mice chewing big holes in your walls 🤣 That's a heartbreaking amount of work and a hell of an undertaking, yet it seems the absolute right thing to do for the house. Pete playing the woe is me sympathy card cos he's gotta shift a couple of small bags, not like him at all is it 😉😂 pisstake aside you guys are making a serious amount of hard physical graft look easy, credit to you!
We are glad the magic of editing makes it look like we are making it look easy! We have plenty more to do yet.
Well that escalated bloody quickly, to goes from Pete tearing out horrible modern brickwork to Mick blowing a hole in the wall then then digging a cellar entrance to fill it all in again. Christ folks you like your hard graft eh? New floor and doorway looks cracking though. Stay safe folks see you all next week
@@scottsorby7966 don't worry, there is plenty more underpinning to come! The house appears to be built on mud and we all know you don't build a house out of mud!
It's actually called "pierre apparente" as in the stones are partially showing. It's much easier to scratch it back when the mix isn't too dry and use a large wet sponge, you don't get the wire brush lines showing.
@@jimjams20001 yeah it was our first attempt! We have learnt a bit about it since. Heard a milk wash goes well over the rocks to help with the finish.
Whow🥴🥴🥴
You seemed to enjoy yourselves on the stairs, but have you ever heard of a reciprocal saw (sawsall)?
@@MickeysMice haha! I don't know why Pete went striaght for the sledge but he enjoyed himself and the stairs came out. So win win, even if not the most efficient method.
I am always befogged by the things that happen! Great video!
I think everyone did a great job here, lots got done!
This was a good video, Pete had loads of fun with that BFH, then Mick tried to ruin it by lifting the stairs out of the house by himself 😂 That brickwork under the stairs looks dire right enough
Thank Scott! Was a lot of hard work that week! Pete should never be let loose with the sledge, one of his favourite hammers! Lots of work to go on the wall where the stairs used to be, as you will soon see!
5:50 surprised Daisy is your fan after what you did to her handing her that hot bit 😉
I think Pete was right when he warned Daisy about the hot end of the drill!
Laughing at Pete handing Daisy the hot bit, I did that to my wife years ago with almost the exact same result 😂😂 Can't beat a bit of guy humour, just a shame that women folks don't find some things as funny as we do. Mick is nuts going down that rubble pile for a shovel, bloody lucky Amanda wasn't there or breaking his neck would have been the least of his worries.
I'm sure Pete wasn't that bald on top in episode 1!
Chris Amanda you really dodges a bullet there, t
@@scottsorby7966 nothing a quick trip to the hospital and a few days off work couldn't solve!
Definitely watched on expecting you to drop a screw Pete! Well done! It's all really taking shape 🙌🏻
Oh Mick! 🙈
Looks like Pete finally got new pants!
7:03 cool new effect!
I've been informed the house was just rebuilding itself. Much quicker.
At 2:35 I felt like I was dusty and couldn't breathe just via the video
Couldn't go more directly towards the camera could it!
23:30 onwards "don't touch that stuff!"
@@AshleySteel some say you still shouldn't touch it even today!
Was the hole all the way through intentional or was it a Mick oops moment? Its incredible how much time and labour those excavators save, even the little ones and amazingly capable. Stay safe folks
Sometimes I think he can get a little carried away when digging through the wall.... Take from that what you will! We were very jealous of the excavators. Maybe one day we will have our own!
@@IfIHadADiggerAFrenchRenovation Ahh so he's one of those famous London vault tunnellers hiding in France, don't worry his secret is safe with me 🤫 🫢 😇 Aye, I wouldn't mind one myself even though I have no use for one and have no space to store it either but it's like the ultimate big kids dream come true play toy
I might be biased, but I think we should cover the stones
Stones covered!! Loved this one! Very funny! Petes nerves of steel up that ladder over the drop!
Show stones!
Lol never stand close to a big kid with a hose, mischief happens 😂😂😂 Gotta admit my pulse was up watching them reach over the stairs. Great work folks, see you next week
@@scottsorby7966 thanks Scott! Was a productive few days during a busy summer. It was useful having an extra pair of hands as well! Thanks for watching, see you again next week.
I agree them templates were spot on!! Also great work with the Jigsaw Ash! 👏🏻
It's really taking shape now! We have a floor 🙌🏻 well almost 😂
Wooooo the blue bucket makes an appearance! You're welcome Mick 😊
16:15 it's cute when they synchronise
Oooo 18:27 is even more saucy
It's the nice long creak we enjoy. @@AshleySteel
Hammer time bmmm bum bim boom
She's got hair 😂😂😂 Much has my sympathy cos I burnt my bonce once, never going through that again and then Oooo look a new person on the site Cracking work with the templates Amanda & Daisy
@@scottsorby7966 haha thanks Scott! We has a helping pair of hands this week and next! Surprising how much difference it makes!
oooof aye he's in a mood alright 😂 Would I be right in thinking that this is the back of the house with the new floor and stairs (Daisy's house?) Im no builder (I'll work with wood any day of the week) and know nothing about bricks & mortar etc but I think you made a top job of that rendering Mick honestly no pisstake mate, it really does look like one of the cheese eating surrender monkeys did it a hundred years ago.
Yep! There is a small courtyard around the back of the building which we will put a gravel bed on. Lots still to be done!
Nice to see the ladies pitch in "girl power" ✌ Just kidding Amanda & Daisy, but it was nice to see you both again. Missed Pete, hope he's ok (not looking for info, it's a rhetorical question) won't be long till that floor is laid and you're all onto the next phase of the project. Now because Im a shameless nosey f'ker, will you be renovating the main house and other buildings after this one or is it only this one that needed all the work?
@@scottsorby7966 haha! The ladies had been busy decorating a room in the main house as a little side project (it's just nice to have something thay feels finished!). Pete popped back to the UK for a couple of weeks but will return shortly. Not nosey at all, the plan is to finish the house, get it up and running, then the barn roof is in need of attention so that will be next. The main house is livable but dated and needs renovating (pink bathrooms are still on trend though right?). We also have plans for the grounds which extend behind the main house, but they are in what feels like the far future! Glad you are back and hope you enjoyed having some content to catch up on!
@@IfIHadADiggerAFrenchRenovation Thanks for that, yeah I enjoyed catching up on everything, I did miss the weekly updates but it was our 30th wedding anniversary and we both needed a break so off we went
@@scottsorby7966 happy anniversary!
👍
@@IfIHadADiggerAFrenchRenovation Thank you very much, but you should be probably asking my long suffering wife why she tolerates me and never off'd me cos I still can't figure that out lol
Yeah that beam dropping had the old cheeks clenched tight, I dunno how Mick felt with that happening right behind him as he got on his toes but I bet his pulse got a lot bloody quicker lol Cracking amount of demo and graft this week lads, well done to you both
@@scottsorby7966 Thank you, it was a very close one and probably could have been done a more effective way, but in the moment it all made sense! Love a bit of demo, but we all know it just means more building to be done!
apologies for my absence it was holiday time and Im just catching up... more progress another beam in and poor Mick gets a mud facial lol What will you do with the massive old beams you remove?
@@scottsorby7966 Scott, you absence was noticed! We were all worried we had upset you somehow. Glad you are back and hope you enjoyed your holiday. The massive beams are still sitting in the front garden. Ear marked for an unyet decided project. They are meaty beams that we are sure will be useful for something.
@@IfIHadADiggerAFrenchRenovation theres no chance you could upset me, we appear to have been cut from the same old fashioned (these days) say what you feel cloth and that is one of the reasons I love watching your vid's because theres none of that touchy feely woke shite it's just hard graft and good honest banter between sensible people getting on with life.
Everybody seemed a little bit subdued this episode, hope you are all OK.
@@jimjams20001 think it was the lack of Pete's quick wit thst was missed! All OK, was just a busy week which didn't leave much renovating time!
You should have been wearing hard hats for that platform above the fireplace.
