No, the balloon stayed inflated on the ground for around 30 minutes prior to launch due to unstable/gusty conditions as clouds passed. Most of the flight was 10-11kts with the landing at 8kts (in the last field before about 10 miles of bog!)

in terms of offroading, turn your weels right and back up a little fast till you reach even surface. But you must not push the brakes until you reach down. It needs training. you did what was safer and recomended since ther was no help or experience. well done :)

Obviously NOT a quick release ! Ha! This is similar to an old Semco attempt. The 1960's Semco also was supposed to be a quick separation of the envelope to deflate, and was shown to be unsuccessful. That's why they then went to Velcro tops, and then parachute tops! Everything old is new again.

The balloon is made from a special mylar fabric called Trispi-25. It is not a standard balloon fabric. The 'smoke' that can be seen is steam as on a normal balloon, water vapour would pass through the fabric, whereas Trispi is non-porous.

As the fabric has no porosity, what you are seeing is water vapour (steam).

Looks like its about to go up in smoke at the end...

Further comments - On a record flight where fuel conservation is important, there is no point whatsoever putting in small burns during a cold descent (unless the mouth is showing signs of wanting to close!) as any heat is immediately cooled (and therefore wasted) - Malcolm

The internal temperature on a true cold descent is that of the ambient. The descending airstream maintains the internal pressure. The terminal velocity will depend on how heavy the balloon is. We flew a 60 in Italy last week with an ultralight basket, one-up, and it wouldn't exceed 450fpm in a descent from 10,000 feet. without venting further. Pauline arrested her descent at around 1000 feet agl. Malcolm

This flight was mainly to break the duration record although it did more than double the existing altitude record but flying at 458 metres. I will upload a more recent video of Pauline flying a balloon that is slightly larger to 13,500 feet in Italy earlier this year.
