    Haha! Glad you didn’t die! 😂. That’s so awesome to hear though. Do you have elderberries on your property? I have 3 varieties that I grow here but I haven’t been able to get fruit yet. I’m really working on them this year, with fresh soil & compost, hoping they’ll do better next year. I’ve been having issues with grasshoppers and locusts attacking them these past 2 years. Hopefully next year we’ll get fruit! I can give you some cuttings if you need some!

    I’ve been making elderberry jam from foraged elderberries the past few years, and the only “safe” recipe I’ve found called for around 60% sugar to 40% fruit by weight. Apparently there’s not enough acid in elderberries to make it shelf stable with water bath canning, so the “safe” recipe uses sugar alone as the bacteria inhibitor. I didn’t like it so I used apple cider vinegar and about 25% sugar. Tasted wonderful and I didn’t die after it sat in the pantry for about a year lol.

    I`ve been having a lot of green ones being eaten inside the husk in Louisiana. I find them with tiny holes in the husk with half the berry inside eaten. The big green tomato worms like them too. I only have one plant because I started with a different variety that barely produces and a wild variety with tiny berries that taste mildly pleasant but never turn yellow...they stay green but slightly lighten to a greenish/yellow when ripe. But I finally got seeds of the type you have in July. My one plant is 12 feet across and I get a handful per day. Next year I`m covering an unused area with them...at least 8 or 10 plants. They`re delicious! Is it true that this variety can survive freezing down to near 20f?

    • @SecondMileDIY
      @SecondMileDIY 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I haven’t experienced them lasting below freezing. They typically start to die back once temps start getting below 50. BUT, I have definitely experienced them reseeding and coming back the following year. In my experience, it seems once temps stay above 50 on a regular basis, you’ll start to see plants popping up, anywhere you had them the previous year. I also have an area where I had a lot of half eaten fruit still inside the husk. In that instance, it was ants and spider mites causing problems. I put out some ant bait stations not too far from there and that helped the ant problem. After that, I didn’t have as much issue with the half eaten fruit anymore! As for tomato horn worms, you might want to grow some basil nearby. That could be why I haven’t had that issue because I have tons of basil surrounding my plants. I hope you enjoy your new variety!!!

      You growing the ones from Peru? There’s a difference and the only ones I grew was of that kind. Same thing. Like a brown leftover maybe caterpillar poop. I found native ones and none of that. I have seeds and I’ll try to update after I grow them but I think you did what I did and bought the ones from Peru.

    • @baneverything5580
      @baneverything5580 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@elzyhensley7636 I have both, the Peruvian Cape Gooseberry and the Aunt Molly Ground Cherry. The latter is extremely productive and the berries need to be stored a few days after falling from the plant to ripen fully. The former ripen on the plant. I caught one of the bugs finally at night...it was an infestation of earwigs. They got 75% of my ground cherries but I`m still getting about 25 a day from one plant. Next year I`m treating them with that stuff you spray on hiking clothes to kill ticks but it isn`t toxic to humans.

    • @baneverything5580
      @baneverything5580 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@SecondMileDIY I caught the bugs in the act. Nocturnal EARWIGS! I caught two inside the husk and looked up bug pictures until I found the name. I`m still getting a big harvest but they`re getting most of them. I put some mild type of bug dust on them that isn`t very strong to hopefully control them because cold weather is coming in a few days and they were trying to eat them all. I`m saving the half eaten berries for seed and I threw some under my fruit trees so they`ll sprout there next spring. I planted some and I have 5 inch plants to bring inside to grow for the winter in a 5 gal hydro bucket with an aquarium bubbler and lights on a timer. I tested one in a simple non-bubbler bucket outside with 5 grams of MaxiGro power per 5 gallons of water and it`s growing and fruiting. I`m trying others in forest soil in pots inside too.

    I would have guessed the pennies since copper is used to kill root systems, but probably not enough leaches into the water on a short time frame. Vinnegar and sugar will probably be one of the last ones standing. If you do the experiment again in the future, try a rusty nail in one glass.

    Was thinking to go tomorrow to get one of these, i tried rolling primer on 6' wood fence planks was a disaster i layed them side by side next day i checked them out they was sticking together like glue habing to break them apart then having to scrap of overrun primer on sides was horrible so now that i got them cleaned up want to give this thing a try, how much water do you add in with the paint if i need to? I nought gliden premium exterior satin paint im hoping dont gave to add water just fill the tank & start spraying, i have 232 6' wooden planks to paint it will be much easier using the sprayer i would guess rather then rolling it on that would have to be separately if the sprayer doesnt work for me.

      If it’s new paint, you shouldn’t need to add water. Our paint was a year old and needed a bit of thinning. But in the instructions that come in the box, it does instruct you to do a viscosity test so I would definitely do that first to make sure you are ready to go! That way you don’t have to do anything over again. I think you are going to love the sprayer! Good luck with your project!

    Thank you! Generally speaking I have been eating/cooking with all but the greenest ones you showed. Obviously there are some that still fall off the plant even greener than that, but I use those to share as seeds for next year. Recently I have come across folks claiming that the solanine and solanidine in green and even green/yellow ground cherries is the kind of toxin that builds up in the body over time and is thus extremely dangerous even in small quantities. I have noticed absolutely none of the listed side effects, but I only started growing ground cherries four years ago.

    Could you go into more detail on at what state of ripeness ground cherries are safe to eat? I have seen people claiming that the toxicity is still present even when the fruit is a greenish yellow, that they should only be eaten when 100% yellow. About 25% of my ground cherries that fall off the plant when the husk is fully dried out are still this greenish yellow color inside.

    • @SecondMileDIY
      @SecondMileDIY 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well first let me tell you that it’s just slightly toxic. It’s not deadly or anything like that. You’d have to eat a ton of them in order to experience a REALLY bad effect. The yellower they are, the sweeter they are. But as long as they are starting to turn pale yellow, they will be fine. I eat them at that stage all the time. They are just more tart. If it is still toxic and you are eating like a handful of them, the most it might do is give you an upset stomach. So I would recommend letting them get as yellow as you can and then testing them and see how they taste. Most of the time, you wouldn’t even like them at the toxic state. They wouldn’t be palatable. If you have young children or pets, you might just monitor them around the plants because they are the ones that might eat them when they are still toxic. I’ll do a quick short later, to show my current stash. I’ll come back and post a link once I do! Good question though!! I hope this answer helps!

    Help! My ground cherry plants in my raised bed are producing and dropping green cherries but my other plant in a pot is producing normal cherries like the ones you've shown and they taste fine. I think maybe its due to over fertilization? Do you have any experience with this?

    • @SecondMileDIY
      @SecondMileDIY 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Have you tried opening the husks on the fallen cherries to make sure they don’t have any pest damage? If they are clean from any damage, you can still take these inside and they will ripen off the plant, just like a tomato does! If you can possibly send me some pictures or videos, I might be able to get a better idea. You can email Shala@secondmilejourney.com

    • @SecondMileDIY
      @SecondMileDIY 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes they will! I always have a bowl of them sitting out and when I want a handful, I just go dig through them and pick out the yellowest ones. So I usually have a bowl last me several days after I’ve brought them inside. Because they continue ripening each day.

      @@SecondMileDIY These ones are not turning yellow and continue to slightly shrivel up over the course of a week or so. I am growing tomatoes as well and I pick those when they start to turn color but these are different? The larger plants in the beds are still producing green fruits but I think this weekend I will apply a more balanced fertilizer and get back to you folks. The little guy in the pot who gets about 3-4 hours less sunlight is out producing the two bigger boys 😅.

    I am notorious for rushing around and not slowing down when getting things done. This has cost me a broken index finger on my right hand, torn tendons in my right elbow and then ultimately I tore the tendons in both shoulders when I was over-zealous with a t-post driver. And since I tried to be Mr. Tough Guy all the time, I waited too long to get these checked out and ultimately it caused some major arthritis in my body. Ladies, I'm speaking to you! Please don't be like me. I guess as a single mom for so many years, I was determined to prove that I was strong and could do things on my own. Our feminine bodies are NOT built like a man's. So slow down, accept the help and stop pushing yourself so hard. (I'm preaching to myself here) This accident I had on Monday happened while pruning my tomato plants. And ultimately it was all because I was rushing and not paying close attention. As I was quickly trimming tomato vines, my finger got in the way and I cut right through it with my garden shears. Blood spurted EVERYWHERE as I stood there in shock for the first 30 seconds. Luckily my mom wasn't far away and she helped put me back together. This is just another injury that I obtained IN the GARDEN because I never learned my lesson to SLOW DOWN and not get in such a hurry. Remember the big goose egg I shared on my forehead this past spring? That was also from not slowing down. Moving so fast that I stepped on the end of a garden hoe and it clobbered me in the head and I nearly passed out. SMH!!! I'm just sharing my pain to hopefully save YOU from making these same mistakes. Is anyone else out there as clumsy as I am??

    I used the method of cutting out the borer and rooting the stem a few years ago and again last season. I buried the stem under soil. It was very successful. I wrapped foil around the bad part and piled soil high around the remaining stem, covered with mulch and kept it watered. It took time but grew new healthy roots along the stem and continued to grow.

      That’s amazing that it actually grew new roots! I have tried that soooo many times and it has never ever worked for me, unfortunately. And after talking to other Gardener’s with the same experience, I chalked it up to being a myth. I will give it another try the next time it happens. Thanks so much for sharing!
