Porcupine quill, not the doffing pin, to pick out waste from the carding drum: The OTHER reason you want to do that, is the porcupine quill won't bend any of the pins on the drum!

Will a 72 tooth carder work for any wool? There is also a 46 tooth one. Not sure which to choose. I have different breeds of sheep.

Hope I haven't jinxed my dog... blurted out "I want a porcupine quill!" (Never knew they were so large.) We came nose to nose with one on a walk in the woods last fall. Luckily it was a chill porcupine and Jax obeyed my 'run for your life' command without thinking - jumped away and ran for home. ;) Surprised by how many How-to videos show people shoving their "screwdriver-like" doffing tool into the carder teeth!
