Great stuff! I just got my second 1980B up and running this week. It was a few burned out bulbs on the front panel and dirty contacts on the hybrid chips as well as the control panel buttons. I have another unit that I still can't get up and running. No display, but beam find does show a dot in the corner. Also the computer seems dead because the rotary knob doesn't work at all. You don't by any chance have a Channel ¾ plugin around do you? I need one to complete this working unit.
I have a second one I purchased as a parts unit. It powers on but the rotary encoder does not function, and the digital storage option does not seem to work correctly. I do not have an additional channel plug in, been looking for one myself. It's looking like I'll have to buy another parts unit to get one. Thanks for watching.
@@CraigPetersen12f36b Yeah same here. I'll have to spend more than I paid for the working unit just to have two more channels. ;)
I agree, it is a very cool scope for when it was designed. The channel 3/4 plugin also has a battery for local RAM. I have two of these scopes and all the batteries have date codes from 1983, they still have well over 3V output and no leaks! The only caps I've had go bad are two supply bypass 100uF? on the Horizontal ASIC.
Thanks for watching. Yeah, it's a pretty cool scope, unfortunately soon after I posted this video the issue resurfaced again. After going into a deeper dive, it seems that either Q30 and or Q31 appear to be failing. The reset pulse going to Q30 does not change in either amplitude, frequency or width, there is no sign that the clamping diode is leaking. So, at this point I'm going to replace Q30 and Q31. Interesting that the 3 and 4th channel module has a backup battery, the only battery mentioned in the service manual is the one in the enclosure on the back.
A bit of an unusual scope, almost no knobs & full of light bulbs
"You can't have enough test equipment". Would you mind explaining that to my wife? :)
I love me some old CROs. God bless you ☦️ ❤
Very COoL. Yet ANOTHER HP scope that I've never knew about (mark time). HP was prolific! Good repair... When I first heard the symptom my brain started to seize up a bit. But like all things.. it's all about coming up to speed on "how the system works".. Today, it was man over machine! Congratulations! 500 points awarded. A "knobless" scope? And here I thought that was actually a recent trend. Thank you for the walk around. This was A sub-worthy video :) Cheers from So.Ca.USA 3rd house on the left (please call ahead before stopping by)
Mine is not working. I think i will see it now. I jave a ft 720r the vhf bersion the most times opens and one res dot only apears and some times it opens the display but no sound comes
Sometimes those symptoms are a sign that the PLL is unlocked. In that case I would start to troubleshoot in that area first. Thanks for watching!
Craig, I haven't used my 775DSP in 14 years. Connected a dummy load to it and no PO whatsoever. Do you know anyone in the SoCal area who is qualified to work on this? Pretty sure that the finals are out of it, if my memory serves. Many thanks for taking the time to respond! 73 de Me
Unfortunately no. However, you might be able to call them and see if they can provide you a list of qualified service shops that may be able to repair this transceiver for you. You can still get replacement parts from Icom for this transceiver but no longer service it directly. If you're sure it's the PA section it may cost about the same to find one eBay and swap the entire module out. 73 and thanks for watching!
Nice to see this video. It remembers me to the time we were working on this in Heerenveen. IMy part of the job was the software for the display, written in assembly lsnguage. The main software was Basic! Thanks for bringing back the remembering!
Thanks for giving some background on the development of this instrument. I have been traveling lately and haven't had much time to dive into this instrument. Thanks for watching!
Enjoyed this. The problem is now I want one.
While extremely limited it still is a useful tool to diagnose HP-IB bus issues. It even has a header on the back that allows you to attach a logic analyzer if needed. Thanks for watching!
Nice job getting it working. 10 bucks is a steal even for a busted one!
Can you tell me the places that you hooked up the tone board maybe show me a picture or something?
I have posted the image here. photos.app.goo.gl/gksC6mUmF7UaUMz27
The memorizer was the first radio I ever got as a ham around 1979. Built like a tank.
It is my understanding that HP custom made them for the telecommunications industry. They probably placed it on the catalog to see if they could make any additional sales. When technology changed in the telecomm industry, there was no longer a need for anything with an output amplitude that precise. (nothing in the catalog that I have seen can do ruler flat amp within 0.02db)
I own one, they are ruler flat from 200 HZ to 80MHZ within 0.02db!!! The output attenuator broke on mine, and now the output is always 20db below what you program on the front panel. Does anyone have any idea about how to work on the output attenuator?
I just looked at the service manual. There is a section that details how to service the attenuator, but strongly suggest that the attenuator be exchanged for a new one via their "attenuator exchange program" long since gone. It may be cheaper and less frustrating to find a parts unit off of eBay.
Great scores! I own an HP 1980B 4 channel with the digital storage option. Very interesting scope, one knob does it all as it is a digitally controlled analog scope. Once you get used to the control concept you will find it a joy to use. Be warned, it does use quite a few zebra strips in the plug-in modules. I beleive HP only built it for a few years to bridge the gap between analog scopes and when they were ready to produce completely digital scopes. Regards, David
I've been pretty impressed on how well this scope works. The HP-IB control language is fairly straight forward making setting this up remotely a breeze. I have a "parts" unit coming that has all the digital options installed, I might be able to simply swap boards and the button panel on the left to upgrade this unit, we'll see. Thanks for watching.
Google "8031 inverse assembler" if you want to use your 1670G for debugging an Intel 8031/8051 microcontroller.
For your zero, you should press and hold until it stabilizes to get the true zero. Also, it helps stability if it is not held in your hand.
I tried that several times after I had posted the video, I eventually had to adjust the "zero" trimmer on the A3 board to correct it. For its short comings it's still a very useful instrument. Thanks for watching!
thank you. very informative
WoW awesome tracker, I didn't know this model at all. I once got a 576 on ebay for reasonable money, but the price for shipping + tax to the Czech Republic was absolutely astronomical (3x more than the tracker itself), so I didn't buy it. I currently have a copy of the TEK TI210 but it only works up to 60V, so I'm building my own up to a maximum test voltage of 200V. Similar digital trackers are produced by Huntron, including automated test stations, but it has one drawback and that is the price 🤔 a trip to the moon might be cheaper 😂 Thanks for showing this beautiful machine and have a nice day 🙂 Tom
Hello Tom, I wasn't aware of this unit either. I bought this from a seller that I also purchased an Agilent 1670G logic analyzer from. After a quick search I found the unit listed in the 1990 Tektronix catalog, read about its specifications and features then made the purchase. It was a VERY good deal compared to the 577 and other curve tracers listed in the catalog. Since doing the video I have also tested the print function and it also works just fine. It may be limited to 100v collector voltage, but it will provide up to 100 watts of power and should be more than enough for my lab. I hear you on getting things shipped overseas, I have some vendors I work with in the Netherlands, the shipping alone is sometimes more than the replacement part. Thanks for watching, hope you find something local to your area.
@@CraigPetersen12f36b Hi Craig, that's good news that printing is working 👍 Here in the Czech Republic, it is a big problem to get testing equipment for reasonable money, 550 USD is a great price for a tracker, but it is more than a third of my monthly income. I used to own a Huntron 2000 tracker, but I lost all the equipment I had acquired in a lifetime when my workshop was completely robbed. I could buy a non-functional model 576 for approx. 670,- USD without tax, customs and shipping, but after adding it up, I came to a price of around 2,200,- USD and that was absolutely unbearable for me - today only an amateur. In addition, some models from the 57x series had big problems with the HV transformer (I think they are transformers in the brown version), so there is a big risk that you will buy an almost irreparable device for that crazy money. I know another model that is similar to yours, but it is a Sony/Tektronix license with the model designation 370, if I remember correctly it is produced in versions - 370 / 370A / 370B - I even found it functional for sale for absolutely (for me ) absurd price of 18000 USD. While looking for a new tracker, I came across an individually modified model 577 that had an additional interface for communicating with a computer for data storage via USB. If my information is correct, the 576 was not originally intended for direct sale, but was developed solely for the development and service needs of Tektronix and later somehow found its way into the market. In the range of 1500V, it supplies a current of only 100mA, but at 15V it is able to generate up to 10A. Currently, the best available in trackers is Huntron's Model 3200S with two independent A+B inputs with G1/G2 and two IDC-64 sockets allowing up to 128 direct connection combinations. Nice day 🙂 Tom
It's been a long time since I used one of those power supplies, probably more than a decade. I like the low noise (acoustically and electrically), but I've never understood why HP built versions without a programmable current limit (I should rather say: I wouldn't want to do without it). I've seen a video (actually, I think more than one) about these power supplies where capacitors leaked badly, destroying traces and causing leakage currents that affect operation. Although I can't remember whether these were HP or Agilent branded, I would certainly inspect/measure and potentially replace the caps if I wanted to keep these supplies. I was really surprised to see these problems, because I rarely had any bad caps in my old HP gear (6060B, 5334B, 33120A etc.). One notable exception is the 53131A (in my case Agilent) with its SMPS - and it's a type of equipment that is common to see many hours of operation.
With all the HP, Agilent, Tektronix and Fluke gear that I have, I have only run into a capacitor issue twice. An HP 3437A and an HP 5328A that had a power supply over volt failure. While I was taking the 5328A apart, I discovered that the main power supply filter caps were only now just barely starting to show signs of leakage around the terminals. Prior to that the 5328A was working just fine. That's pretty good run for something that was built in the late 70's to early 80's. I have yet to run into an issue where there was leakage that resulted in trace or some other board damage. Most of the equipment that I have had been serviced in the last 5 to 10 years, however I do inspect the filter caps and check the power supply voltages on the units that have missing, broken or old anti-tamper service stickers. Thanks for watching!
@@CraigPetersen12f36b one exception are the RIFA caps. These have almost always a cracked case and usually have to be replaced.
If you're interested, I've got an extra HP 8920A RF Communications Test Set I would let go inexpensively. It has errors in the RF_Diags tests but does boot up and has all menus working.. Amtronix Instruments Calibrated and upgraded the one I have on my bench. They will also repair the 8920A. Chris S knows who I am if you want more info or to play with it before you buy. Everson Wa.
Thanks for the offer. I originally wanted to find a HP 8920A or Motorola R2600 series communications analyzer, but they were either priced higher than what I was willing to pay for, had seen rough service or had a number of faults. So I settled on purchasing discrete instruments instead of buying an all-in-one solution. I may re-visit the issue down the road, but so far I'm satisfied with the current setup. Thanks for watching!
Well, now that you have two, maybe you can compare some readings and get the parts unit working! Repairs are always faster when you can live compare with a working unit!
Yeah, I thought about doing that since now I have the proper risers so I can get to all the test points on the cards. But since I have two functioning 3335A's the parts unit will just stay that, a parts unit. Other than the cabinet, missing hardware and the malfunctioning card I swapped out, the rest of the unit, front panel, CPU, attenuator, power supply, frequency reference are all still good. Thanks for watching!
Thats a beautiful little instrument to have. Ready to go, it even has a protective cover for the potentially dangerous tests. I would love to own a machine like this, but i dont think i can stomach the price for a such a rare machine.
I paid about $550.00 for this unit. 576 and 577 model curve tracers usually fetch $600+ for non-working and over $1000 for working units, however these units can produce test voltages of up to 1500v. This one goes to 100v which is fine for me. I really like the units compactness, another is the ability to store as many as 12 presets and print screen captures. Thanks for watching.
I've never seen or heard of this instrument (and I know stuff!).. Very COoL. You really know how to activate my I WANT gene. That usually only happens during the 3rd date Definetely a SUB worthy video. Thank you. Cheers from So.Ca.USA 3rd House On the Left.
Thanks for watching! I'm certainly going to be able to take advantage of this unit, way more versatile than the cheap component testers I have been using.
Awesome ! never seen this model !.....cheers !
Thanks for the great tutorial. If I run this stock radio with the power turned to maximum, what would the amperage draw be from the 12 volt car battery? Could I plug this into a cigarette lighter outlet or would I need a dedicated hard wire?
Typical current draw for a stock AT-6666 running full power on FM is about 7.5 amps. I don't recommend using the cigarette lighter plug for anything over 5 amps. The center contact can have fairly high contact resistance and may present issues for you. I use the "Littlefuse add a circuit" pigtail and draw power right from the fuse box that's inside the cab of the vehicle. In any case, I would recommend a 10 amp fuse. I use a 50 watt 2 meter rig in my mobile and have had no issues. Thanks for watching!
@@CraigPetersen12f36b Thank you for the response!
Nice video. Still prefer my 576
Well arn't we the "hot house orchid"... But seriously. We understand you Jedi! A 576 was clearly created by the gods I would trade the future generation's youth to possess one (especially since it's of no use to me:). Cheers young Jedi 🖖Live long & prosper
Mos cert, the 571 looks like a better choice for people with more urban apartment sized benches :)
@@splitprissm9339 speak for yourself! I'm in Philly and I'll always make room for my 576 😂
I only ever heard of the Tektronix 577 (e.g. here: th-cam.com/video/wXiR01HLhUA/w-d-xo.html ) but this is a really nice one too. Thanks for showing it to us!
I've always wanted a curve tracer but I have only ever seen the old manual ones, this is very neat but I note it doesn't go up to the voltages of the older units. Still, I would be very happy with any, I don't think I have ever seen any second hand curve tracer for sale in New Zealand and I cant afford the freight from US. Thanks for sharing
That's the first I've heard of that model. Thanks for letting everyone know about it! It seems similar to my HP 4145A, which is also a digtial curve tracer.
Thanks
Wow, $10 for a parts unit... that's cheap. No way I could get my hands on something like this at that price in Germany.
Thanks Craig
Hope it helped, it took me a week or two to track down all the software I needed to install. While National Instruments no longer supports Windows versions earlier than 8, you can still download all their older software from their FTP site. download.ni.com/
Thanks for the vid. I remember watching this a long time ago and when I went to adjust my 8644B's 10811 this morning (just purchased and repaired a 53310a, and am currently in adjust everything mode) I was having similar symptoms and this came to mind. It did turn out to be the problem. Works perfect... thanks!
Glad it helped, I have only come across this issue once or twice over the 4 to 5 years I have been purchasing used gear. At first, I thought it was a cold solder connection but was relieved that it was just a lose jam nut.
Hi, I have exactly problems and same output behaviour on my HP3335A. Now the display problems have all been sorted so I have the display. It remains the output problem giving exactly same output in frequencies as in yours 22.5Mhz 44. etc... and no output on the other ranges. I noticed that I do not have voltages (20V un. and 15V+ going to the Ref. Oven board) and thus I have the unlocked msg. Can you please let me know how you sorted the problem on your unit?
Thanks for watching. I haven't serviced this unit yet and it is still on my "to be repaired shelf". I was just thinking about this unit the other day, I was able to find a N step loop card for a good price and swapped it out with the card that I suspected may have some sort of fault. Unfortunately, it didn't change and was still displaying the same issues. I also suspect that the fault may be in the summation loop since there are two VCO's on this board and one of them may not be locking properly. I was able to finally find some riser cards for this instrument and I am just waiting for them to arrive.
I bought one of these off a seller on EBay and when I finally got around to hooking it up to a decent antenna I find out that it is only able to receive lower sideband signals. Apparently the assemblers at MFJ installed the wrong filter crystals in it, and now the MFJ is going belly up it looks like my chance of getting it fixed are null.
Interesting, I just sold mine at a hamfest last week and no longer have the unit. You may want to look at the BFO circuit and check that it has been adjusted properly. This may be the reason it appears to be receiving on the wrong side band. Thanks for watching.
@@CraigPetersen12f36b Thanks for the suggestion Craig, I noticed an adjustment in the tuning instructions where you have to select the second of two peaks when aligning the radio so that might be it.
Newbe question, does the meter have some options for measuring modulated signals? Or does it only work well with clean sinus?
This meter is only designed to measure continuous carrier signals. It will measure a modulated signal but the readings will be erratic. The only HP power meter that I know of that is designed to measure PEP power is the HP 8900C. This meter is an older analog style and takes older power sensors that can be difficult to find. Thanks for watching.
Great video! Where did you get the filters? I’m wanting to do the same.
Good Morning, I purchased the filters off of eBay, the prices were about $125.00 or so each, about what they were new. These filters made a big difference on crowded bands and have breathed new life into my 706MkIIG. I have the CR-282 high stability option but have not installed that option yet. The last module I plan on installing is the speech module that announces operating frequency and mode.
This is one of those videos that creeps me out because it was a suggested video, that came a couple hours after having had a conversation with an Elmer about getting those filters … and neither of us had our phones with us.
I just picked up a Memorizer and want to install a supercap to retain the memory. I had one 30 years ago and added the then-common nicad battery backup but can't seem to find any information about it online. Any information you have would be helpful.
I do remember hearing something about this back in my early days but cannot recall anything recent. Yeasu made many variations of this rig so I would imagine you could eventually find something. Thanks for watching.
@@CraigPetersen12f36b I've thought about using a super capacitor instead of a battery but since I don't use it that often I don't see a good reason to modify it. I have an Icom 290a that has the same issue.
Is there a large zero offset on the 3400a? Is that normal?
Yes, the first 10% of the scale is ungraduated for this reason. The service manual states that the meter movement will typically rest within the first 20% to 50% of this ungraduated region when operating correctly. Thanks for watching.
why no audio out?
I didn't have a powered speaker on hand that I could hook up for this demonstration. Thanks for watching.
@@CraigPetersen12f36b I'm just now learning and getting into testing equipment so at the time of that question I genuinely didn't know whether that had audio out or not - I've learned a lot in the past week!! thank you for being a part of that journey
Thanks for a Wonderful Super Comprehensive Insight into the ANYTONE AT6666.... Very Best to You and Yours from ChCh, NZ
Thanks for watching, for what it is I was pretty impressed with the performance of the radio. The only faults I can point out with mine is that the rotary encoder is bouncy, likely a bad encoder, and that the IF filter is too wide for SSB. 73.
i agree it is good on recive i found with mine to
i have one in my house in the Philippines really great at reciving skip im cb'er and only on 27 megs
I have used this radio several times on 10 meters. Worked several stations back east out of the mobile. Would get unsolicited comments on how well the audio sounded. The only issues with the radio I have is the rotary encoder is a bit bouncy and the receive is a bit too wide on SSB for my tastes. I added the near impossible to find CTCSS tone encoder so I can try some 10 meter repeater contacts with it. But overall, for the money, it's a very good radio. Thanks for watching, 73.
thats my dad on the box
What are the differences between the Tek 2430A and non A variant?
From what I have read the A version has some extra measurement capability that the non-A version has. Other than that, they are essentially the same.
Hi! Got one of these too and use it to find out how to program my "boat anchors". Old HP-IB gear usually uses the EOI (end-or-identify) bit set at the last data byte instead of the trailing CR/LF. And you should send an UNLSTN command after you're done to free the bus for other communication (which isn't going to happen :-) Many greetings from Austria!
You are correct, I just copied what was produced from HTBasic to see how the command syntax was structured. A lot of the HP-IB command documentation I've read is not very clear sometimes. I was curious as to why an EOI statement was not used at the end of the capture. I have seen this instrument used to send a rewind command to a HP 9 track tape machine and an EOI command was used in that demonstration. Anyway, thanks for watching and the shout out from across the pond!
Nice video! I got one from eBay a little while ago. I really like the feature where the slow mode while in listen mode will slow down the communication between your computer and the instrument.
Yeah, being able to halt or slow down the HP-IB transactions really helps out.
