Absolutely not a fake city ! This is indeed a faithful restoration of the highest order. There are many photographic evidence from the late 19th century that shows potions of the city walls. Excavations on surrounding areas based on Ming dynasty Datong city map also reveals the foundations of buildings that once existed. Clearing the top soil also reveals the missing lower potions of connecting walls attest to its accuracy. Extensive restoration on the crumbing Ming dynasty walls also enable restoration to be as accurate as possible. The Ming dynasty castle walls were then very well designed for defense. That frustrated the invading Manchus many attacks and also inflicted huge casualties on them. The Manchus expressed their intense hatred and anger had the top part of the entire wall destroyed. Thus many turn-of-century photos show the top part of the walls missing. Then Datong's Mayor Geng Yangbo had a portion of the old city restored to its glorious past. This mayor was indeed far-sighted as it will definitely be a great destination for domestic tourism in the future. Actually I would say this is a very well restored Datong City wall that is worth the effort despite the cost. At present some may not appreciate it but I'm confident of its success as a worthy historical site in the future.
