"Jethro & Friends" Jethro Burns, Steve Goodman and Chet Atkins (4/ 11/84)
This show was produced by KTCA, our local public television station in St. Paul, MN. It featured the amazing Jethro Burns on mandolin, as well as the equally amazing Steve Goodman and Chet Atkins on acoustic and electric guitar, respectively.
For Goodman fans, he doesn't show up until about 33 minutes in. So feel free to fast-forward (but you'll miss a lot of outstanding pickin' if you do so). Though this show was recorded on April 4, 1984, it was broadcast locally on August 22, 1984, just one month before my dear friend, Stevie died (on September 20, 1984, at the young age of just 36).
I was in the audience for both the dress rehearsal and the taped show. I also have the dress rehearsal recorded, but I think I'll stick with the broadcast version for this public venue.

Arlo Guthrie, Steve Goodman and Hoyt Axton on "Soundstage"

This is a "Soundstage" from 11/11/74, produced at WTTW in Chicago. It was called "Arlo and Friends." The friends of Arlo Guthrie were Steve Goodman and Hoyt Axton. I love this show. Not just because I was with them all day during rehearsals and sat in the audience during the taping, but because it's a really good show. Fun fact: During the rehearsals, someone asked Stevie what he was going to p...
Enjoyable and I needed this!
God bless Arlo
Senior in HS when I watched this on WTTW the local PBS ststion. I've remembered it all these years - The rendition of Walking Down the Line always stuck in my "troubled mind."
Fabulous.
Thank you for this! The Dutchman is such a great song about dementia in old age. It’s a tragedy that Steve Goodman never got the chance.
A lot of talent here , thanks for posting.
Such a wonderful show. WTTW have us some great entertainment with Soundstage. After seeing Gordon Lightfoot on Soundstage in 1979 it prompted me to buy a cheap guitar and learn to play. Later I took some college level songwriting course and began writing ballads. One of my better efforts is a song entitled "Where Have All the Songmen Gone". The first verse says: "What's become of Jim and his old friend LeRoy Brown. Had anyone seen Harry's cab? It's so sad he's not around. Then young Steve he went away, he left Arlo on the train. So Gordon won't you write a song like Early Morning Rain?"
I know Steve Goodman was kinda short, but how tall is Arlo? That hat makes him even taller.
I always loved Steve Goodman’s guitar playing. Not sure there’s a name for his style, but he sure could play. I remember seeing him in a little place in Cary (Harry Hope’s?).and he was laying a National steel guitar. Some drunk called out a request and threw a coin up to the stage, and it hit the guitar. It’s the only time I recall seeing Steve upset or angry. He was otherwise always so full of joy and life.
wonderful !! thanks for uploading !!
i heard steve goodman perform in a little afternoon bar at a large hotel in myrtle beach early fall 1974. He was the gentle man. He asked if i could type out some of his songs !! the stack was huge and my typing skills were nil. But he gave me an autograghed 8 by 10 of him. memories. had no idea we were both born in 1948. he left us too soon. thanks for this upload.
Steve is gone now. Hoyt is gone too. Arlo is up there in his 70s. Ramblin Jack is still keeping the Reaper away, last I heard. What are we gonna do when these guys are gonna ?
When Homer died, the only thing I saw about it was a 3 or 4 paragraph notice in the Anniston Star. I was a boy and my grandmother cut it out of the newspaper and saved it for me. She knew I was a fan.
This was a fabulous find! Great performers. I never knew about them in the seventies. I wished I had. Well better late than never! Thanks for putting this show up on TH-cam❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😍😍😍😍😍😍
Loved this! ❤
Timeless pile of talent here. If chet atkins shows up, i know i will die.
So much talent and fun in this video. I was lucky to see Steve Goodman and John Prine at Armadillo World in Austin in the early seventies. They stood up on this big stage with their guitars and made us all laugh and cry. What great songwriters, musicians and human beings they were.
Used to live with Danny Velika on Bass) (on Dewy Ave, in the Compound) on Dewy Ave in Pittsfield MA
Hi Mr. Fineberg - thank you so much for this upload; the show is awesome. As a big fan of Steve Goodman (and Jethro!), this was a real treat. Is there any chance you'd be willing to allow me to re-transfer this tape? I believe I can achieve a truly excellent result; please see videos on my channel for example of my transfers. If not, no worries! Thanks again for the great upload!
Thanks your interest, and for asking. I don't feel comfortable in passing the recording on to anyone else. But, please feel free to post a link to this page.
What a trio!!
Just gobsmacked! What a lineup. ! Thanks for posting this. Really good sound, too.
Wow!
Is Steve Goodman playing a Martin J40 - but that model normally has hexagon fret markers ???
Sublime rendition of The City of New Orleans!!
Jethro is one of the best improvisers of all time.
Incredible - JETHRO BURNS swings ! Django Reinhardt would have loved him !
I think he'd be glad to see Joe Biden resign now!
Four great guitarists all supporting Nancy feels just about right
I have been looking for the Soundstage tribute to Steve Goodman that aired shortly after his death, narrated by Roy Leonard...I had a videotape of it that was sadly lost...would love to see that again
I thing and more feel Arlo sang to the world !! Yet, took him Time .stevey took longer , although Arlo Is a little taller! Steve Was a very tall heart. So the song came from love of what makes the world go round ,like the song? One day your a happy enchilada and your about to drowne And you hear a song and they give it to us In a song?It sure was Great full that we! Let em know it touch us? In the way it all feels ❤Mr.prine and all futures past will agree. Thank you and hope to see and hear You dear Arlo sing again one more time. A A true kid from 1958 that herd all the heart full music that means ❤love
I just want to comment because I have watched this 20+ times. Thank you so much for uploading this. It is amazing music from start to finish. Hoyt Axton completely makes it.
Brave of Arlo to have Steve Goodman on his undercard. Goodman was a powerhouse.
Nice perspective, Glen! Steve Goodman was, indeed, a tough act to follow!
4:09 The Power Of The Blockbuster Film. Like "Oh, Brother" would later do for Bluegrass, "The Sting" helped bring ragtime back to the youth of the day. Networking. Cross Promotion and other words that hadn't become popular yet...
What are you saying here? Making a comment about the concert video, or promoting something?
@@johnfineberg258 Huh? I am just saying that dormant music styles can be revived by being used in a big movie. Rag via Scott Joplin (The Entertainer) in The Sting and Bluegrass via Soggy Bottom Boys in "Oh, Brother, Where Art Though". Arlo commented that Ragtime was on a comeback and I'm saying the movie "The Sting" was largely responsible for the comeback at the time. That's all. And on a personal note, I was introduced to Hoyt Axton from his guest spot on "WKRP in Cincinnati." and his role in "Heart Like A Wheel". And I can sing "Alice's Restaurant" from memory, if that helps my credibility. And I'm learning of Steve Goodman here!
Just making sure you're not selling anything here. Thanks,@@happyfamilycanada1129.
Fantastic
It takes some serious stones to play mandolin on the same stage as Jethro Burns.
Don Stiernberg is the guy to do it!
just good music
Just wonderful.
Wow! I miss this.
I was 3 months and 7 days old when this happened. Loved these guys my whole life.
Hard to believe Steve Goodman died about 5 months after this was recorded. 😞
You wouldn’t have been able to tell. Always smiling and full of life on stage.
amen, rip
I think I like his sense of humor.😊
Last time I saw Hoyt Axton was when he appeared on the Boston Common on a hot Summer night back in the late 1970's -- He was onstage with Joan Baez , an unforgettable concert --The estimates say there were somewhere near 1/2 million people packed into that corner of the common --Joan sang SWING Low Sweet Chariot ( accapella ) the sound reverberated off many tall buildings in that part of Downtown Boston --Hoyt sang his BONY FINGERS song to an appreciative audience --It was an amazing concert that went over 2 hours
Thanks for sharing! Fantastic!❤
Great music. Thanks for posting
Watching Steve Goodman and Hoyt Axton is a Christmas present to me
Two extremely talented singer/songwriters gone but here for you
Steve Goodman's talent is truly remarkable.
Back then you could actually steal train rides
J'adore!
