2024 December Dorsets Road
Slippery but entertaining drive up a hill.
Event run well by Wairarapa Car Club.
Corolla AE92 GT sedan gets another day thrashing up a hill, with the little 4age giving it all.

My first run of the day, I got lined up with a GT3 Porsche. Spoiler alert: GT3 Porsche's go a lot quicker than GR Yaris'. Ignore the less than ideal lines. I was scrubbing in some new tyres.

First outing for the refreshed (but still stock) 4age. Taller springs today too, so getting used to the handling. Thanks to Levin Car Club for putting on a great day. Thumbnail photo by Graeme Swan.

Certainly the most technically difficult course that I've set us to do at the Masterton Motorplex. Nice warm day, bit of fun in the GR Yaris, on increasingly hard Goodride tyres.

A very wet day at the drag strip venue, in the GR Yaris. Running road tyres, against the possibility of standing water. Good enough for second in class and overall, behind the same car running Dunlop soft semi-slicks, and slightly ahead of a Honda powered MR-S on the same Dunlop rubber.

Escalating from the quite scary first course, to a downright alarming second course. Turning from racetrack onto gravel, with cuts on grass. Very technically challenging. Standard GR Yaris.

First of two course, very challenging swapping between racetrack, and various flavours of gravel adjacent surfaces. Standard GR Yaris.

Running the GR at the "Rubber Duck" autocross event, using the drag strip and return road. Started out very wet, but gradually dried out to merely damp. Relatively cautious drive, because walls are scary, and tyres are a bit tired now.

This was the last run I did for the day, as I was probably over-driving the car sufficiently in this run. Fairly sure if I'd had another run I'd have thrown in into the scenery.

Trying to convince a ZC32S Suzuki Swift to be a race car. It was entertaining, if not very quick.

Bit of a bouncy ride up the road, with a fair dose of sumpguard versus ground. 4AGE Corolla is still going okay, but is about to be replaced due to intense levels of oil consumption.

Sealed autocross, in the 2016 Swift Sport. One wheeler pealer is certainly the theme of the day. Also the brake pads are made of cheese. Fun though.
Starioncopter?

Slight rotational issues with Aaron's Starion. He didn't seem unhappy about it.

The GR on the way toward putting down the fastest time of the day. A bit damp underfoot, but not too bad. Drove quite well, especially considering the extremely cheap semi slicks that I run on this car.

Rather a tricky day at the hill today. There were some road works, meaning that there were a couple of diversions on the road that hadn't been there in the past. Along with deep deep gravel. Unfortunately it pissed down as I was getting ready to do my third run of the day, so I packed up at that point rather than risk a dent and go slower. The recorded run is run 2 of the day.

Your living my dream. I can't wait to finally work on my own car and take it onto dirt tracks like that. You did great out there! Must've been a whole lot of fun.
Launching in 1st or 2nd gear?
Yes....* It's a TRD close ratio gearset, so first gear is extremely high. Then it's running a Starlet diff ratio, to try to make the car somewhat acceptable to drive to events. But that has still translated into 4200rpm in top gear at 100kph (62mph). Which sucks. So really I should have just kept the shorter Corolla diff ratio, and gotten a more useful first gear. Currently my first tops out at something like 70kph, which is why you can see me repeatedly going back to first gear in the last year and a bit worth of videos.
Interesting "slow zone." How was that enforced?
Yep, we do that slow zone, as we have a limit on how much "straight line tarmac" we can run at that level of event permit. If we exceed that, we need to run a higher grade of permit, which means a much higher level of event safety and licence. That excludes people who don't have the right gear and licence. The enforcement was a beam at the start and another at the end of the slow zone. It does a two second count from when you break the first beam. If you take more than two seconds you get white light lighting up (visible to driver and to timing control). If you take less than two seconds, you (and the timing control) get red & blue flashing lights and a 5 second time penalty. If enter the slow zone at 55kph, and hold a steady 55kph, you're good. I got the red & blue disco lights a few times that day!
Faster than an MR-S. ✅
It was on the day, a buddy of mine was there in his K20 powered MR-S. Which is a pretty cool little car.
I see I was messing up the slow down box very badly now.
Just about needed drift front knuckles to get that one back!
I use the EXPOSURE VALUE COMPENSATION (EV COMP) setting in ProTune...I think I permanently set it to -2. You can use spot metering but supposedly that gets reset when you restart the GoPro....that means that I'd have to remember to check it every time I use it and I don't trust the thing not to randomly reset itself!
Nicely driven
Spot metering, centre. Same as every other time you've asked over the last 10 or so years of GoPro use. 😛
Ha, first to view. Looks like a challenging bit of road.
Yup, a few corners that tightened up quite nicely, combined with starting uphill, and then dealing with some down and some flat. One guy unfortunately binned hell out of his car on practice. Bent rollcage and almost every panel. Occupants ok. Car knackered.
2nd pin turn at th3e far end was much cleaner!
Look at the beast with the bonnet open at the end!
AE92 4AGE
14:19 SPEED AND POWER!
Lmao xD
That thing is impressive, really good work. Did you do the swap yourself?
I didn't do the swap. Bought it, and then refined a few things. It was running the 3SGE flywheel when purchased, so immediately cooked the clutch. Custom flywheel & Toyota Dyna clutch went in, to keep that under control. Then adjustable suspension with very high spring rates. Raced it for about a year, and then sold it on.
Cheers for the efforts videoing and publishing this event Leon...
Share away :) all good by me.

Autocrossing on grass, in a Toyota Corolla AE92 (GT sedan) running a 20 valve 4AGE silvertop.
Is that the 1uz Altezza that was on trademe? Looks like fun, and very tail happy!
Yes on both counts. She's a handful in second gear that's for sure.
