Hi and welcome. My name is Nick Pitsas. I’m a photographer and filmmaker, and this channel is about traveling and photography.
The channel was previously known as Japan Photo Explore, but since I live in Australia and travel to other destinations apart from Japan, I decided to change the name to broaden the scope of the content. Of course I still love traveling to Japan and there will more content from Japan in the future.

Japan Winter Photography Extreme Snow: Hokkaido Photo Vlog Ep 1: Wakkanai and Cape Soya
Hi Nick, amazing work. As a fellow Aussie, how would you describe the driving conditions and do you have any tips? Hard to understand what driving in the snow feels like as it hardly ever snows down here.
Thanks for your feedback. If you've never driven on snow before, I would suggest an all wheel drive car. They are quite common rentals in Hokkaido. You can even get something as small as a Toyota Yaris in 4WD. They will come standard with winter tyres during the snow season. Conditions can vary from dry compacted dry snow, which is reasonably good to drive on, to sheet ice, where you put your foot on the brake and the car ignores you and keeps moving. This has happened to me. So you just have to drive much more cautiously than what you might back home. There is also a difference between driving on the flat and driving in mountainous areas. I avoid winding mountain roads. The other unknown is the weather on the day you are driving, which can vary from bright sunshine to blizzard. Because of this I would suggest picking up a car when you arrive at a city and use it for local trips, then move on to the next location and repeat, rather than a road trip where you are relying on driving long distances between cities to keep to your schedule, even though there may be a blizzard coming through. This has also happened to me!! Hope that helps. This is a trip I did several years ago. th-cam.com/video/p12cS8wqwJw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=3kU29-ZgLB9BBx_e
Hi,what lens did you use,and did you use a gimbal?
Festival video was shot on a Gopro 11 with a gimbal (Inkee Falcon). All stills shot on X-T4 with 16-55 mm Fujifilm Mark 1 lens.
I am so tempted to get an X-T4 even though it's older. Flippy screen + the older generation sensor that I absolutely love in my Pro 3? Really liked this video. NIce work, and definitely made me want to visit, especially shots like at 4:25. Just subscribed-hope we can keep up with each other’s work here on YT!
Thank you very much for your feedback, Nick. Really appreciate it. I'm still very happy with the X-T4 and haven't felt the need to get a newer camera. Just had a quick look at your channel and it looks interesting. I'll make sure to check it out properly. All the best.
@ Yeah, I think most of the upgrades are just to put bigger numbers on the boxes haha. Thanks for taking a look at my stuff too! Trying to build a big community here on YT, it seems so much easier than on the other platforms these days!
Immaculate quality, as ever, Nick. Stunning advertisement for the XT-4, which did a lovely job all round. You wandering-around technique must be superbly unobtrusive since you get so many close up and candid shots. Fantastic all round. Thank you for sharing.
Many thanks for your feedback, John! I really appreciate it. One technique I use is to stay still in one spot and try to blend in. Sometimes it works!!
@@nickpitsasphoto Well, it really worked this time. Brilliant and intimate
What a treasure. May your good fortune for the year abound.
Thanks, Celia. May the spirit of the Kibune bring you good fortune too.
Amazing video and photos!
Thanks for the feedback. Glad you enjoyed the video and photos.
What a find. I can imagine how unexpected this would be in Shinjuku. So much energy, colourful and vibrant.
Thanks, Ted. It was a fun and very unexpected shoot.
Another beautiful video, for which much thanks. But...You should have many more viewers for your masterpieces. A few hundred is ridiculous. And I have one suggestion to make - put "Fujifilm..." at the start of every title. Millions of potential viewers are scrolling through TH-cam looking for confirmation of their Fujifilm camera purchase. Your videos show off the stunning Fuji video quality in difficult lighting etc. So this video should be reposted as "Fujifilm XT4 [or whatever] goes to the Shinjuku Night Festival". Then stand back and watch the view numbers pile up. Believe me no one will find Shinjuku - it only means anything to Nippofiles. But Fujifilm! Now there's a word to conjure with.
Many thanks for your encouraging feedback, Terry. Nobody is more frustrated at the numbers I get than me. I will implement your strategy and see what happens.
Excellent video . I’m going to Hokkaido for the month of February what is the best way to go to rauso from Kutchan
Thanks for your comment. Rausu is on the opposite side of Hokkaido to Kutchan, quite a distance away. We flew into Nakashibetsu then got a rent a car to drive to Rausu. Enjoy your trip.
What an epic, a true pilgrimage. The trails are beautiful and some look pretty challenging. I love the bear bells and your still shots are inspiring. Well done holding the video steady for that length of time. I don't know how you did it. Great video, thanks Nick.
Thanks for your very generous feedback, Ted! I'm really pleased you enjoyed it. You've inspired me to get back out on the trails!
Extraordinarily vividly captured. So tranquil, so manicured. Got it in one, Nick. Beautiful.
Thanks for your very generous feedback, John. Really pleased you enjoyed it.
hi ! can you pls tell me about car rent to there? do they accept US drivers license? thank you
@hoanglong9228 @hoanglong9228 thanks for your comment. Generally they will not accept just your US or any other foreign license. I have always used my Australian license PLUS an international driving permit, which has a translation of the details.
@ thank you
Thanks for the video Nick. Can you help a fellow Aussie out with some gear tips for Biei? What sort of focal lengths should I be looking at for the classic minimalist shots -Christmas Tree, seven trees etc? I was going to travel with just a full frame 24-120 but wondering if I might need a 100-400 or similar as well? It's very hard to gauge how far from the road some of these things are. Also, how are the drone restrictions? I'm tossing up whether to take a drone. Cheers.
Thanks for your feedback. You are right, some of those trees are quite far away, and to isolate them you need something longer, so the 100-400 would do the trick. Asahikawa airport is nearby, so you'll need to be careful where you fly.
@@nickpitsasphoto Thanks, I really appreciate this information - just don't tell my wife what a 100-400 costs :) We'll be there early Feb for the snow festivals - can't wait!
@@kakman1958 Ha ha! Well... I wasn't suggesting that kind of investment! I presumed the only decision you had to make was whether you would bring along a lens you already had. A 70-200mm would also be fine.
Hi please tell me where is the tree snowy picture was taken? Will be going there next month really appreciate it. at 2:00
Just Google "Mild Seven Hill Biei" Enjoy your trip!
Did you use ND filters for the long exposures? They are all beautiful photos!
@preven2296 thank you for your comment. Yes, I used a 10 stop variable ND filter.
Beautiful work! I will be there in January 2025. I’m so excited. Could you share the equipment you use?
I was using a Fujifilm X-T2 with, mainly, 16-55mm and 50-140mm lenses.
That is amazing❤
My favorite is the shot at 4:38.
What a nice video…I used to live there for four amazing years thank you for sharing this lovely scene of Biei in winter ❤
Thank you for your comment, Linda. I really appreciate it. How lucky were you to be living there!!
Absolutely spectacular. The stills of the various churches are beautifully composed and add a whole other dimension to the video. And being a geology geek, I greatly appreciated your commentary. I hope the trip back was a bit easier than getting there. Thanks Nick, it's a great video. Cheers Ted
Many thanks for your kind words, Ted. Glad you liked the geology references. Fortunately we got the last 2 seats on the bus back. Much easier than walking there!
What a great walk Nick! Made me want to know more about the place - like where does the tradition of painting buildings white come from? The rocky scrubby appearance looked unlike anything I’ve seen, but then I haven’t been walking over exploded volcanoes before as far as I know! 😂 good to have those tips about avoiding the crowds. On my trips I have been entertained by other travellers taking pictures. People’s interactions with their friends and the places are often interesting in themselves.
Thanks for your comments, Malcolm. Yes, that walk is unique. Really. There was an outbreak of cholera in 1938 and people were ordered to paint their buildings white due to the antibacterial properties of lime wash. Also, summers are scorching hot, so the white helps the passive cooling of the buildings. I should have put that in the script! Ha ha!! Have you heard of the legendary English photographer Martin Parr? He almost built an entire career out of taking pictures of people reacting and interacting on holiday.
What a practical reason for painting the buildings white! And only relatively recently in history terms. I will definitely have to look up Martin Parr - would be interesting to see. Thanks for all the effort you put into these productions Nick.
can I see the same scene if I trade 1st week of Dec?
Biei does get about 30cm of snow in December, but I'm not sure anyone knows how much of that will be in the first week.
Interesting.... I traveled through Muroran a few years ago by accident and stayed the night because it was much cheaper than other places in the larger area. I ended up driving through an area on the hills surrounding the steel plant and it was absolutely fascinating. I had never seen a steel plant before and I have to say the sight and sheer size is impressive. No regrets coming through.
did your lens fog up when you moved out of the heated cabin
No. Its when your camera is very cold from being outside for a while, then go into a warm space, that your lens fogs up. If your camera is in a camera bag when you come inside, leave it in the bag for a couple of hours so that it warms up gradually.
Great birding video, can you please share the cruise booking contact. Always wanted to do winter birding in Hokkaido. Thanks you
This is the company I used. www.e-shiretoko.com/en/
Wow 😮 such an amazing journey! Thank you for sharing.
Do you need snow chain on the car tyres to drive safely?
No. You just need to make sure that the car is fitted with winter tyres. Every car rental I've had in Japan in winter has had them.
Another beauty. Especially the top-down pics of the herring drying racks.
Very nice location. I recently moved to Athens (About 3 months ago) and i also recently started with street photography. I have struggled with Athens since i would really like to go for architecture photos. But in my opinion Athens is not the city for that since alot of the buildings feels like copy and paste. I have alot of time left to explore and also to learn more about street photography but i really liked the theme you were going for.
旭川🥰
Last time I was in Hokkaido one of the locals told me that if it gets very snowy you can't access Shiretoko. Do you have any experience with this in February?
Yes, that's right. Most of the Shiretoko Peninsula is not accessible by road during winter, including February.
Thank you much for amazing destination 😊
You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice place 😊
Another beautiful video. I am envious.
Thank you, Terry. I really appreciate your feedback.
Been here for the past two years in a row and heading back in June ❤ thanks for sharing, your video made my day!
Your voice and perspective on things are very soothing. I thank you for these videos and photos.
Nicely done Nick
Thanks Nick for your inspirational videos of Wakkanai. We've recently had the pleasure of visiting and photographing Wakkanai and Abashiri in winter. Such a wonderful experience!
Beautiful video ! thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this great video. I live in Hokkaido and visit Biei and Furano often throughout the year. It's a beautiful location and always a pleasure to visit, as well as always providing a multitude of locations for photography.
Thanks for the information, I'm heading there in a month.
So nice
Great video, thx for sharing. Now for those photos, OH MY 🙌🙌Phenomenal, thank you for this amazing work
Thank you for your feedback. I really appreciate it.
Did car rental give winter tyres ?
Yes. I'm pretty sure they are required for driving in Hokkaido in winter.
I to agree Michael Kenna is one hell of a photographer.
Well done Nick, beautiful minimalist shots. Superb location.
Many thanks, Ted. Always fun going back to Biei. I never tire of it. And even Susan is keen to go back - for furher purchases from Super Fuji Mart!!
Some great drone work, Nick, and some of your best stills yet! Interesting to see how many other photographers were out and about in those wonderful minimalist areas.
Thanks, John. Really appreciate your comments. Yes, for better or worse, Biei seems to have been 'discovered' since I first went there in 2015.
Great video, well shot and extremely informative.
Lovely stuff, Nick. Looking forward very much to the next episode: I feel I am travelling with you, but keeping warm as well!
Thank you, John! Next one is a return to Biei and its coming soon. I feel that's my calling - to get cold so you don't have to!
Sounds like a plan!@@nickpitsasphoto
Well done Nick. I so enjoyed this walk and felt like I was right there with you. The crunching snow and the intermittent voices and sounds of those amazing people at work made my day. Ted
Thanks, Ted. I could not have wished for a better reaction to the video. Cheers!
