The Prison Test - Dream To Destiny - Pastor Robert Morris
Gen 39:19-20
The Prison Test is the test of perseverance!
•Will you do the right thing even when you suffer the wrong results?
•Will you do the right thing even when things don’t change?
Rom 5:3-5
1. Tribulation produces perseverance
Tribulation and trials are going to come! Get used to it!
•Joseph did the right thing and went to prison!
•This story is similar to the pruning in John 15.
•If you don’t bear fruit, you’re cut off.
•If you do bear fruit, you’re cut on! But either way, you’re still cut.
•But I would rather be cut on than cut off!
If you don’t do the right thing, you’re disciplined and if you do the right thing, you’re pruned!
James 1:2-3
Perseverance is fighting the battle while you’re waiting with contentment!
•Perseverance has to do with a long and difficult trial.
•This was the longest trial that Joseph went through.
The perseverance test lasts a long time!
•For Joseph, it was 10 - 13 years.
•For David and Paul, it was 13 years.
•For Abraham, it was 25 years. For Moses, it was 40 years.
Perseverance doesn’t come in a week!
•“I want patience and I want it now!
The Greek word for perseverance means “cheerful endurance or hopeful endurance”
•It means waiting and warring with the right attitude!
•It involves faith!
•It means that we actually believe that God is working all things to our good so we can have hope and joy in the midst of our circumstances.
2. Perseverance produces character
Why do we need perseverance?
•Because perseverance produces character!
•Character supports our destiny.
•If there is anything that will cause us to not fulfill our destiny, it is a lack of character.
The worst thing someone can do for you is either, promote you before you are ready, or deliver you out of a trial that God is using to build your character.
This is the only thing that God said produces character.
•He didn’t say any other thing in the Bible produces character!
•It is only produced by perseverance
•And perseverance is produced by hardship!
“God, isn’t there any other way to get character?
•Maybe I could get it by impartation.
•Maybe I could get someone of character to pray for me!
•I want character and I want it quickly and painlessly!
Heb 5:8
And the reason that He had to suffer to learn it was that
•Obedience is a character issue and
God uses long trials to produce deep character.
•And it is only through long difficult trials that deep character flaws emerge.
•Job was a righteous man but through a long difficult trial, self-righteousness emerged.
Joseph was a man of great ability. No matter where he was, he prospered, but God wanted to show him that his own ability couldn’t deliver him.
Why did the butler forget?
•I believe he could have been delivered right then if he hadn’t tried to manipulate the situation and justify himself.
Gen 40:12-15
It’s very hard not to justify us.
•He said to the butler, “Remember me because I am innocent!”
•And God said, “Oops! 2 more years!”
Joseph would have thought, “The way to get ahead is to drop hints!”
3. Character produces hope
Joseph did the right thing and suffered the wrong consequences!
•Has that ever happened to you?
•Have you ever been accused of something that you didn’t do?
•Have you ever been lied about?
•Have rumors ever been spread about you?
•How did you respond?
When we respond correctly, it builds our character.
•Remember Satan is always there to twist the facts and produce evidence to support his lies!
•Remember the lie that Jacob believed and the evidence to support it?
•It was Joseph’s coat!
One got him thrown in a pit and one got him thrown in prison!
•It could be 20 degrees and I wouldn’t wear a coat! “Aren’t you cold?
•Do you want to borrow a coat?” No way!
•Get behind me Satan!
Pro. 13:12
And hope is that God is a good God and is working all these things for my good!
Our hope is in God not in our situation! Joseph made the best of where he was and walked with God every day!
Phil 4:11-13
The way that we know that we can do all things through Christ
•Is that we go through some circumstances that we need His strength
•And so we confidently make the statement,
•“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!”
Gen 40:6-7
How could he do all this?
•Because his trial produced perseverance
•And his perseverance produced character
•And his character produced hope
•And his hope produced and appointment to minister
•And his ministry ultimately changed his circumstances!
Let me explain something to you.
•There is only one person that can thwart your destiny!
•There is only one person that can hinder your destiny!
•There is only one person that can delay your destiny!
•And that’s you!
People may forget you and not keep their word but God will never forget you and He will always keep His word!

Fulfillment of Prophecy Jesus was laid in a tomb that belonged to Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy man (Matthew 27:57-60).
