The thing with the automatons on the higher difficulties is you’ve actually got a better chance if you stand and fight against the seemingly impossible odds than running (unless there’s something specific that you’re running to, like a cliff system or some other kind of bottleneck to force them through. What’s cool about the bots is that because of their variant types engaging them with conventional modern military tactics is usually pretty effective. In infantry doctrine, there’s a concept called “winning the firefight” (I know lol wow winning that’s a great idea) but basically when you come into enemy contact you need to fire back and overwhelm/suppress whoever’s shooting at you before you try moving any significant distance (obviously taking immediate cover is different, don’t just stay in the open if you have better options). Most bugs will try to catch you, and can therefore be kited (damaged while retreating from them, for anyone that doesn’t know the term) pretty easily. Most bots can and will shoot you in the back, so even if you’re feeling overwhelmed you’re better off planting your feet and thinning their numbers than running for your life and burning your stims while getting turned into Swiss cheese. Even if you make it a fair distance, the fact that you’re not focusing on fighting back means that when you do inevitably have to confront them, they’ll probably be in far greater numbers than they would have been if you’d just dealt with them in the first place.

Pro tip: when fighting the bots try to have someone bring a smoke screen eagle or orbital. Helps cover a tactical retreat like this.
