Compressor motor mis-shipped here so I was told to go bring it back to the shop. Nice long ride to Kirkland, IL to this dairy farm. I'm allergic to most farm animals but had to take the opportunity to say hi to these beautiful ladies (probably was a guy in there somewhere... do female cows have horns?!) Immediately use disinfectant wipes to minimize allergic reaction. If I don't start wheezing ...

9/15/2021 I picked up this 1976 GL1000 in South Beloit, IL last month for $325 with title, no keys. Owner's son said his dad died in 2005 but didn't know the last time it ran. I got a replacement key on ebay. Installed a new battery. No spark. I replaced the coils and plug caps with new and and spark returned. I went through the other electrics. I tore down and cleaned the carburetors. They wer...

Second large bike, post 350cc single cylinder BSA, large for me. Sturdy, dependable, only two adventures. Rode it from LA to Salton Sea one time. Exhaust pipe fell out of one cylinder. Got it back in and screwed down, rest of trip uneventful. Another adventure was commuting home from working on Castaic Dam Oversite summer college break job. Was drafting behind a semi southbound on I-5, 70 mph, about half throttle. Clever, coasting, saving gas, engine seemingly untaxed. What could be better? Better would have been the rear wheel not becoming obstinate and refusing to rotate. Holy guacamole! That big finned air cooled 305cc two stroke engine did not appreciate chugging down the freeway at 70 mph while enjoying about 30 mph breeze worth of cooling, the math just did not work (did I mention the summer thing?). Grabbed the clutch handle to stop the rear tire squealing, fell further behing the semi, the engine grabbed more breeze and unseized 3 very anxious seconds later. 49 years later I am about to retire. My draft # was 300, yet drafting almost took me out anyway.
Ya I do know over 100 mph.. Mine topped out at 124. Not actually 250, measured 247cc. Rated 33 hp@6,000 rpm.
Way too much smoke. I bought this same blue bike in '66. It had "Posiforce" oil injection set at the factory at 25 to one. That's 25 parts gas to one part oil for those who don't know. Well, that's proper for a chain saw or a weed eater but will reduce performance and foul spark plugs at that rate. Good thing it was adjustable. With advice from Don Vesco who ran 2 stroke bikes on the salt flats for land speed records, (look it up) I reduced the oil mix to 50 parts gas to one part oil. OMG! Now we get some power outa this bike! Oh yeah, U could get over 100 octane gas at any pump in those days. So I rode the hell outa it. Put 100,000 mi on it in 4 yrs, Drag raced it at OC raceway in '67 and '68 and averaged 10.3 sec. Ya 6 gears, tach redline 9,000 rpm, seen it turn 12,000 repeatedly. DAMN FROGGY little rice grinder!
Awesome cover, I've been trying to figure this one out myself.
im looking to purchase a 1968 yahama 305 any info on where to locate one
Had one I rode to high school. Long gone, but I still miss it.
They were only 55cc larger than the YDS3, but it felt a LOT more powerful and they were faster. Thank you.
かっけぇ!
The clutch was stuck. I can laugh about that because when they're 50 years old, they generally are stuck from sitting in old oil and those chemical processes that plot against old clutch parts. I'd say 70 percent of the old bikes I worked on had stuck clutch plates. But I got it freed up. Neat bike. Belonged to Jim Welch while I worked for him at Savoy, back in 2011.
Great bikes indeed, very well done. I used to have a YDS3 back in the day, loved it !
You get to come and visit the shop. Oh, and bring me a beer, David. My throat gets a little dry breathing all that two stroke smog every day!
