I know I'm late, but I think [S] WV: Ascend deserves a place on a list like this. Compared to later flashes, it's not as big and epic, but [S] WV: Ascend is the first time Homestuck makes you go "holy shit." It's the first time this story proves that it has a plan, that it's going somewhere, and that where it's going is complex and intriguing. Explore still has to be one of my favourite tracks just from how perfectly it was used in this flash. [S] WV: Ascend is the precursor to what Homestuck flashes became.

Great list, I agree with a lot of what you said, and the video format is fun. A couple of flashes I would have considered at least as honourable mentions would be [S] Roxy: Sleepwalk and [S] Prince of Heart: Rise up. Sleepwalk has really creative visuals through the lens of the dream bubbles, and Rise Up has a lot of badass moments, fun prespective juggling and the official reveal of the Condesce!

I'd been aware of the game before, although I never played it, but only recently discovered it got an anime adaptation. Binged the whole thing over the course of two days, and it was a real slog. The series looks good and the characters are all likable enough, but the narrative structure is just so sloppy. It's not just the lack of resolution to most of the mysteries being setup, it's also that there is little to no progression either. Instead it feels more like a disjointed hodgepodge of monster of the week one-shots as the girls keep chasing after rumors which often seem to get less and less relevant even as they keep accidentally stumbling deeper into the mystery regardless. It also certainly feels like there are too many characters, though I think that has more to do with lack of pacing and focus, as other shows can manage larger casts just fine. The biggest issue for me is that the early episodes give us a double fake out. First Iroha's friend and seeming partner in her old town just disappears after the first episode, and while that could be sensible enough under the premise that someone has to stay behind and protect the old town from any lingering witches, it was the friend who was so interested in finding the salivation Kamihama offered in the first place. Worse still though that after that we introduced to another team of girls to act as Iroha's new partners and friends in Kamihama, they are shuffled to the side almost as quickly to make way for yet another round of new characters. After two false starts it's hard to get invested in further characters without knowing if they'll even stick around long enough to be worth it. Although even at that it maybe could have worked if only Iroha herself was a more developed character and if the primary mystery of searching for her lost sister held more immediate focus. Instead Iroha just seems to sorta lazily drift from one episode to the next, her mission to find her sister never quite forgotten, but also never really seeming all the urgent either.

As someone who discovered homestuck very shortly before it’s end, I find myself less perturbed by the artstyle of Collide. I would say I had maybe less time to fully associate homestuck and what could be called its distinctive artstyle. It feels to me more as a sublimation of what homestuck could be and look like if it had unlimited production time and budget. Plus you know, Heir of grief is in my top three homestuck songs if not my favorite altogether so... But yeah, I understand how you feel about it.

the anime definitely doesn't do the game justice, there's so much plot development missing and character development that IS explained in the game and looks like its not in the show, maybe in later seasons??? (the game is also pretty slow with the amount of grind)

[S] Jade: Enter still my favorite Flash to this day just because it made me lose my SHIT when I first saw it It was the first "well, everything's going to shit" After this, more bad stuff kept happening so the feeling of "oh shit a bad thing" was replaced by "oh well another bad thing"

It’s one thing to end on a cliffhanger. It’s another thing when almost none of the questions were answered, half the cast are now cult members, you presumably kill off the main character before her quest was finished, and then you end it on a cliffhanger.
